    This week I revisted an old project- a homemade Tattoo Machine. I built it from scratch and even made the coils myself. What a fun project!!

    Am I the only one who thinks that this was both inevitable and overdue? I love Laura's builds but even better, I love HOW she builds. The shortcuts and the techniques I've seen have really helped me with my own projects.

    Well... this was unexpected!
    Very cool... but unexpected!
    Edit: Tattoo guns were almost always home made and often by the artist. Like a lot of craftsmen's tools, it's not like ordering one from Amazon or at the time, the Sears catalogue was a thing. I remember prison machines often used the small motors in portable audio cassette recorders/players, like the Walkman.

    The first one I made was out of a motor from an old Walkman cassette player...
    An E string from a guitar sharpened to a fine point...
    And the ink tube from a ball point pen with the ball removed as a guide for the needle.
    Yours is way better :)

    I saw an upload on here where he made a tattoo machine using a radio control nitro ICE that worked well but not practical, he also made a mini chainsaw and cut off wheel using the small nitro engines.

    It looked like you had your capacitor and coils wired incorrectly, but props for getting it to work with junk. I make coiled tattoo machines. Nick frys electric tattoo machine. You could get stronger magnets by using scotch tape on the coils instead of electrical tape, and a faster hit by using a skinnier armature bar (bar that holds the needle). Good job either way!

    I have a question about the frame of the machine, you plug the negative side of your clip cord in it directly.
    How come that when you touch the frame of the machine when it's under tension you don't get an electrical shock ?

  • @carduelis6635
    @carduelis6635 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Laura,
    don't you think it'd be wise to somehow lead the tip of the neele so it can't wobble around? I mean, when tattooing human skin, you have sideways resistance when the needle is in the skin and you move the gun to the side. This might result, as the needles itself are somewhat springy, in the needle to 'jump' on the other side of the center punches hole. Years ago with a rotary machine built from an old cassette recorder motor, I solved this using a Stabilo fineliners metal tip (the gun was still shit, now I'm doing stick and poke, still considering to build a proper gun). Surely you'll come up with something.
    Keep up the great work, best wishes,
    Johannes

    • @carduelis6635
      @carduelis6635 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Idea that just popped into my mind:
      Widen the center punches hole, cut a thread into it and use motor scooter nozzles. They're dirt cheap/free and you can adapt their size to the size of the needle you want to use.
