Joan, Montserrat, Maria, Marylin, Edita and many more. In no particular order. I refuse to comment, who was better or worse. Who sings a D better, whatever... I am just happy, that i can listen to all of these wonderful artists.
The fact that these singers can bring these ludicrous, boring storylines, and repetitive florid music to life is a marvel in itself. And when it is Joan… gosh. Magical.
I saw her many times in New York and other great stages, but never as Norma. I just watched an interview yesterday where she stated firmly that Norma and Traviata were her favorite roles.
I stil cannot understand those who say Sutherland was a bad actress. Here she is perfect, in terms of acting, managing to convey Norma's fury even through facial expressions. The thing which really "ruins" this clip for me is the fact that Joan Sutherland mistakenly sings "maledetto dal tuo sdegno" at 9:59, which sadly does not make sense, since it means "cursed by your scorn". Obviously, the right line is with the pronoun "mio"(my), because Norma is singing that her scorn towards Pollione will curse him and prevent him from enjoying his impious love with Adalgisa. I know, I am fastidious. 😂Magnificent voices all the same.
Joan is a marvel. The beauty and power of her voice is amazing.
