  • The WW1 themed match brought out a wide swath of interesting competitors and we took a moment out to speak with Rowan M., from Australia, regarding competitive shooting in Australia, the Enfield rifled and his experience with a borrowed Indian Ishapore in 308.

    India has a pretty interesting relationship with the Ishapore. You see, kinda like US Army and Marines, India has two militaries. One is Indian army (IA), the other is a paramilitary force called Border Security Force (BSF). Now BSF usually looks after the borders during peace time, and take charge in relatively low scale skirmishes ( cow-smuggling, illegal immigration etc) whereas army is usually called during war time or terrorist attacks.
    Now BSF does play a second fiddle to army in terms of funding. IA did adopt the 1A1 SLR (unlicensed copy of FAL) during 1960s, but BSF was issued with the 2A1 for a long time. Also, Navy decided that maybe they don't need as much small arms firepower as army, and a 2A1 is good enough. BSF was given a massive modernization after 1971 war, but still, changing the rifles took place upto 1975. However, Navy finally replaced them with SLRs during mid 80's.
    Just thought about sharing this. :)

      That sort of makes more sense than our system. The army and the marines are kinda redundant. Although I have a inherent distrust of paramilitary organizations because they are at the end of the day, a business and will do what the money says

    • @arkadeepkundu4729
      @arkadeepkundu4729 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, the comparison is more accurate to the US army & the US border patrol. The Marines are part of the regular military, while the BSF is only responsible for protecting the border, not fighting actual wars.

    Speaking as one such competitive Australian shooter, it's surprisingly easy to acquire a Cat.A license. If anything, the 1996 reforms have made it _easier_ to acquire both Cat.A and Cat.B firearms. Anybody who wants to run a manual rifle, rimfire or centrefire, either for recreational or work purposes easily can acquire that rifle. What it comes down to is proving you have a genuine reason (already possessing a probationary license) and safe storage facilities. Recreational shooting in Australia can be expensive to get into, but for every year you maintain your license, it gets increasingly more economical. Once you're in, you're golden.

    As I understand it 303 Enfield rimlock is an ammo problem, the proper milspec ammo has beveled rims so they'll jump into correct orientation when pushed into the mag, or worst case jump over each other if one gets out of order. The sharp square rimmed commercial brass is the issue.

    "Rimmed cartridges are obsolete" even though it's the quote by Gun Jesus, the Russians might disagree. On the side what rasputinian sorcery did the Russian used to reliably feed 7.62r in draganov enough to be used as dmr.

    • @6236003
      @6236003 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Big difference between "doable" and "optimal." The only reason that rimmed cartridges continue in military service anywhere, and the only reason they lasted as long as they did elsewhere is that it was felt that the improvement wasn't worth the cost and hassle. If a rimmed cartridge is acceptable, the fact that it's not the best is unimportant. Another example of where cost and logistics made a major army choose something less than the best is the Garand: most people acknowledged that .276 Pederson or something similar would have been a better caliber, but it would have been a logistical PITA, so the Garand was made in .30-06.

      Quite normal way to carry an unloaded gun on range in UK/Australia. Bolt open carried across the chest, crooked in the arm so people can see the action is open. Carry it closed and you learn a whole new world of sore ass from Range Saftey Officer's boot. .
