In my opinion, this cutscene is one of the most breathtaking and revolutionary cutscences in video game history. It is one of those that takes video games to the level of Hollywood movies.

It’s the same with a lot of games on the original PlayStation - laying the foundation for the level of cinematic and story-telling production in games today.
My favourite game since it came out, and I just recently noticed, that the part of William first to mutate is his right side, which is the side where he took all the bullets. The G-Virus mutates to compensate for damage. The more damage, the more uncontrolled mutations.
Without exaggeration, and in light of the context: this cutscene has clearly seen multiple refinements before reaching our consoles, it is one of the most well-considered and good-looking (even now) shorts, that convey the RE2 atmosphere perfectly and top it all with a beautiful rapidly expanding eye featured in the main menu. Nothing but Respect for RE2 team. Old fan.
I mean the remake has something’s over the original than just graphics the gore system,Mr x in general and his final boss theme, the acting is a major spike in improvements to the original, the rpd is a great redesign, I will say though Leon is not as cool hell he still as dumb with the ada stuff, I’m sad they don’t remake this cutscene properly, and this game had the original beep sound effects.
I also got inspired by this cutscene long ago, sometimes when a friendly dies and I am cornered I say "sonova" /(son of a) like the USS soldier does so.
it always irritated me how in cutscenes every character was helpless with the best of weapons while in game the protagonist can kill everything with a mere pistol
These are special forces soldiers, they are trained to have good instincts and they die, Leon is a simple police officer, and he survives. Also I may add that these special forces soldiers in particular were trained for situations like these, even taking combat missions against these in an artificial environment.
The remake is superb, but its version of depicting the Birkin massacre is sooo less badass than the original's. I mean, this cutscene scared the sh*t out me when I played it in PS1. The remake's take is so underwhelming by comparison.
This is still so much stronger than the same scene in the RE2 Remake. Like the more recent RE4 Remake, Capcom seems to have forgotten that the fun of these games partially lies in their operatic/campy tone. I love "gritty" or "psychological" horror but the Resident Evil games don't have stories or characters which work with this kind of terror. They work best when they're big, loud, and wacky. All the attempts to make these stories more "realistic" or "grounded" just diminish the fun in the remakes. To borrow a recent metaphor, Resident Evil isn't "The Babadook" (even though I love that film). Resident Evil is John Carptenter's "The Thing." If you want to modernize it, then push it closer to something like Scream which embraces the camp while still commenting on it. But please...pretty please...stop making it boring.

They really didn't do this scene justice in the remake. This was one of my most anticipated things in the game to see remade, and they chose to split it up into 2 tapes that you watch, and 2 different cutscenes with Leon and Claire. They are well done, but don't explain the situation or show William's awesome revenge the way this does. You empathize with the monster, and that's the beauty of this.
Fucking epic. Can't understand why in 15 years there has been a perfect involution on making horror games. Now they're only shitty action games, no suspance, no good music themes, this is what i call a HORROR MASTERPIECE.
The camera angles, environment, atmosphere, soundtrack, voice acting, everything is just perfect here. I think the same could be say for the RE3 intro cutscene too.
Ok, I'm trying to figure out who was Hunk here. I think the first one who says "this way", and also the same one who stops the soldier saying "Stop! You may hit the sample!" was Hunk. In that case it means Hunk was the one carrying the briefcase with the samples. I can't identify the identity of his teammate but one of the two last remaining members who comes to give fire support was Luke, the same soldier we can see during the intro cutscene of RE Outbreak, he was seriously wounded by Birkin to end up dying by the rats. That was Luke, maybe someone noticed it before. He is the last USS member who runs out of ammo on this cutscene. He is also a playable character on Outbreak, just like Hunk. They are unlockable characters 👍

Cuz it refers to the total number of survivors from the racoon incident, not the number of team members At that time no other character was known to be survivor and the overall count was only 4 including Hunk. Leon + Claire + Sherry + ... Hunk = 4 survivors based of course on the known timeline of RE2, and not considering what followed after, since the storyline of this serie was made up bit by bit after each new game new characters were added to that list, and the devs visibly didn't know at that point they will have to re-put Ada in some futher games, from the player's standpoint, playing back in 1998, she wasn't supposed to survive the lab's destruction but she was never shown dead, just in case.
As a mutant William's first mutation, closest to his human form, William was slow but quicker than most think, lived and worked in the underground laboratories his entire life and knew every which path to and from. Plus could climb through vents and walls using his superhuman strength and power.
I always loved how Hunk's unit raiding William Birkin's lab, fatally shooting Him and stealing the G-Virus echoes how Wesker and Birkin supervised the assassination of Dr.James Marcus 10 years prior in His lab underneath the Church beyond the Umbrella Management Training Facility, karmic justice at it's finest!
Looking back at this awesome cutscene, I realized something. How the hell did HUNK and his team get to that part of the sewers that fast? Assuming all of this happened in real time, the incident happened at the lowest level of the Umbrella labs. They would have to go through, in ascending order (pun intended), a ladder, the emergency car at the bottom platform, and a cable car. William would have been dead at this point. And even if he injected the G-virus not long after he got shot and therefore transforming, his first form isn't fast enough to follow them. It may be possible that HUNK's team was lingering there for a period of time since they did say that the rendezvous point was nearby, but still...

And if we are to take into account that Birkin injected himself with the G-sample not long after he got shot, HUNK's team sure took a long time at the extraction point, assuming there weren't any setbacks or delays.

Haveria história se William não derrubasse a caixa de amostras? Se os mercenários levassem as amostras e não atirassem em William, ele injetaria o vírus em si mesmo? O que o fez injetar o vírus em si mesmo? Ele foi o primeiro humano testado/autotestado pelo vírus ou não, e se não, houve um teste em alguém, talvez em um corpo vivo, um ferimento a bala a que se refere Annette? "Fique aqui", o marido deveria esperá-la, afinal, sua esposa não poderia socorrê-lo naquele momento e ele sabia disso. Quanto tempo correu antes de Leon e Claire chegarem à cidade? Quanto tempo até os ratos e outros animais se contaminarem e contaminarem outros animais? Quanto tempo até a água da cidade estar contaminada e quase toda a população estar contaminada por ela, pelos animais contaminados e pelos humanos/animais/zumbis contaminados? Por que William, a cada momento mais transformado e mais forte, não saiu da cidade? Por que não fugiu? Uau. Como é bom refrescar e revitalizar as lembranças e voltar aos anos 90, especificamente a 1998, ano de lançamento deste grande jogo, extraordinário em muitos sentidos. Jogá-lo na adolescência, naquela época, foi emocionante e é inesquecível. Um cientista criador de um super vírus cuja relação entre os dois é tão forte que ele o chama de "você". Haveria história se William não derrubasse a caixa de amostras? Se os mercenários levassem as amostras e não atirassem em William, ele injetaria o vírus em si mesmo? O que o fez injetar o vírus em si mesmo? Ele foi o primeiro humano testado/autotestado pelo vírus ou não, e se não, houve um teste em alguém, talvez em um corpo vivo, um ferimento a bala a que se refere Annette? "Fique aqui", o marido deveria esperá-la, afinal, sua esposa não poderia socorrê-lo naquele momento e ele sabia disso. Quanto tempo correu antes de Leon e Claire chegarem à cidade? Quanto tempo até os ratos e outros animais se contaminarem e contaminarem outros animais? Quanto tempo até a água da cidade estar contaminada e quase toda a população estar contaminada por ela, pelos animais contaminados e pelos humanos/animais/zumbis contaminados? Por que William, a cada momento mais transformado e mais forte, não saiu da cidade? Por que não fugiu?
