I have a Coleman portable cordless hot water heater on demand in my cargo trailer conversion and it does well but you have to keep the gas to a minimum and everything open ,otherwise you’ll hate your life with the smell of gas but other than that is nice to have a source of hot water.

Thanks for the great review. Just a couple of questions: 1. What does the battery power? You didn't have the AC connected when testing. Is it to power the pump? If so, how long does a full charge last if the pump was continuously running? 2. Does the AC adapter take 220-240v/60Hz as input?

Thanks, glad you enjoy my humor. No wrench is needed to connect the gas. It's what I would call a wing screw, for a lack of a better term, where you can easily do it by hand. The more expensive model can run on ac or dc power and it has an additional hand faucet, separate from the shower. It also has a digital display, for the temperature. There seems to be a lot of confusion about this unit. Internal battery and 4 Ds? Will it run from 20 pound propane tanks as one version contains a 12' propane hose? Can it run off 110/120 household current? One place says battery charges off DC from the car. I wish there was more clarity before buying a $200+ unit. Thanks.
Mr Heater makes 3 versions of portable hot water shower heaters. The smallest version has a pump that runs on 4 Ds. The middle size heater, the XW-18 runs off a rechargeable battery or plugs into ac. (Same with the largest one). I think the middle and largest one run off DC from the car too. I've never tried it. As far as I know, you only can run 1lb propane tanks with these. There may be a Mr Heater hose adapter sold separately, but I haven't looked into that.
I spend a couple minutes draining it. I haven't noticed any issues of water left in there to freeze. You could always soak up some RV antifreeze when storing to be safe.

You certainly did clean up well, Mr. Mark Thomas! Great review. I am buying one right now. Just a quick thought, have you used it much and did it hold up well??
I went and looked at it and it appears the handheld part of the shower has a 1/2" MPT with a rubber washer. That part hooks up to the hose and the other end of the hose that goes into the heating unit has a quick connect fitting of some sort.
It seems like it could be used inside however, it's not rated for indoor use. I'm not sure if there are fumes or if it's because of the risk of the heat happening inside the unit.
I have one for my food trailer and my water hose fitting got damaged and i would pikes to replace it but i can't find it online...Do you have the part number or do you where i can buy it? Thanks

I saw this product in someones sckoolie conversion and for many reasons mostly the safety issue it is not a good idea. Your review of this product really helped. Thank you for sharing.
Glad I watched this, not being able to return the water off at the nozzle would be a deal breaker for me... After using the bag style, it really lowers water consumption... I'm bummed because this was the one I was looking to get :( I'm thinking the instant on version will be the way I go, it relies on flow to start it similar to the on demand in your house. I love the 1lb canister concept but in reality I will have a 20lb on my trailer anyhow. Thanks for a great video!
@@MarkThomasBuilder gotcha. What I'm gonna do short term is a gallon Jerry can, small submersible pump, just heat up water. Once I hit spring, I'll visit it again. Still love the video! Can't wait to finish this trailer and hit some sites. Thanks again
It appears so with this model. I've been testing the XCW20 model this week and it actually comes with a shutoff on the shower head, which is a nice upgrade.
I own a couple other Mr. Heater products and when I seen this thought it would be the answer to my remote camping solution for taking a shower. First off, there is no shut off on the shower head to stop water flow for conserving. Secondly, you have to turn on/off the heater from the main unit, meaning you have to either leave it on all the time your in the shower or open your shower tent and turn it on/off, meaning no privacy and inconvenient. Sorry this time Mr. Heater, this one missed the mark.
hi from Oamaru, Waitaki districts New Zealand. dam i just purchased a Coleman elite for 550 buck in our dollars.. any view on these?..i reckon regardless of brand they look like they have the same guts.
Thanks for response. The Mr Heater XCW 20 has a on/off on the handle as well as an adjustable spray. It's their top of the line unit. I'm putting the video together very soon.
Nice Video, I think I like everything about this product, except the fact that you cannot stop the water flow without having to shut off the unit from the body. I was wondering if there is a way to replace that shower head with a shower head that allows you to stop the water flow from the shower head rather than having to shut it off from the actual unit itself.
Is that friggin' snow on the ground? There is no way in hell I would be having an outside shower in those freezing conditions. I'm from down under in the North (hot). We shower in cold water half the time just under the tap. that boiler wouldn't sell here... it would have to come with a warning label on it. "Caution: Hot water may be above room temperature!" BTW> NIce '90's suit !!
Haha, yes that's snow on the ground. The temperature warmed up enough that day so I could make the video. The summer temperatures get pretty hot where I live, so the shower is able to be used in ideal conditions.

It's hard to say what the most likely problem is. If you have a full propane tank and if you tested it first by plugging it in to power and it's still not heating the water, then I'd contact their customer support. If it works that way but not by the battery, maybe it's the battery itself or the battery connections. Hope that helps.
It only heats water about 40 degrees, so if you start with 32 degree water it will only be about 70 degrees. Start with 70 degree and it will be 110 degree..
My XW18 works 3 times then stop working... I changed the battery for a brand new one because the led indicated that the battery wasn't charged... I contacted twice the Boss (M. I will never buy any product from Mr. Heater again Every time I talk about that in a campground (I'm a year-long RV'er...) I destroy Mr. Heater with a great pleasure!...
Sorry to hear that. I've switched out the battery in the XW18 after the first year or so for one on Amazon. It seemed to work decently after that, but I normally plug it in and never used the battery that much. The biggest unit, the XCW20 is still going strong on the original battery.

It seems like it could be used inside however, it's not rated for indoor use. I'm not sure if there are fumes or if it's because of the risk of the heat happening inside the unit.
how long was the shower on 5 gallon bucket and is there a way to control the tempature?
Here's my follow up video that explains everything. th-cam.com/video/mOsjAktmVYY/w-d-xo.html
I have one for my food trailer and my water hose fitting got damaged and i would pikes to replace it but i can't find it online...Do you have the part number or do you where i can buy it? Thanks
Did you check the Mr Heater website for a product manual? It should have a resource for you to get the part.
@@MarkThomasBuilder yes i did and i couldn't find it Sir
I recommend then calling their customer support in hopes of them tracking the items down.
Thank you!!! I'll try that
Is there anyway to stop the water and run it again from the shower head.?
What a great video
Thanks, the larger model, the XCW20 is the only one that allows shutting off the shower head and restarting it again.
Hello. Does it charge while running. (Taking shower)????
It takes a little while to charge it. I don't think the 5 minutes of charging while taking a shower would make much of a difference.
Dies this model come with soap and shampoo? if not what brands do you recommend? 😆
If you check the REI website, they have lots of biodegradable shampoos and soaps.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I was joking
Haha, I was wondering.... but I do get a wide variety of questions.
Amazing review! I’m sold lol! The suit was the best part LOL!!! Is there a link to order the adapter for your car?
Awesome, thanks! I'm not sure about the adapter part.
Thanks for the review
You bet!
DUDE! GREAT JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks!!
thank you for that, how long is the run time?
Sorry, I don't know off hand. Enough for 1 hot shower at least.
Didn't see it in the comments. How long did it take to go through a gallon of water?
It's 7.5 minutes for 5 gallons of showering. Check out my updated video. th-cam.com/video/mOsjAktmVYY/w-d-xo.html
@@MarkThomasBuilder Thank you! I'll check out the update.
Hhhhh trying to see a Bleu flame on a Bleu light too funny...
The question is if it's possible to hook the big propane tank.
How many gallons will a single green propane tank heat?
I did a follow up video that gives all the details. Here' the link... th-cam.com/video/mOsjAktmVYY/w-d-xo.html
Looked like my uncle dressed for his DUI court date
😂
hahahha
Can the water pump hose be lengthened without problems
It's a silicone hose. I'm not sure how easy it is to replace or if the pump could handle additional length.
Is there a way to shut it off without having to come out of your shower tent to switch off the unit?
I don't believe so. The next model up allows you to. I think I'll be able to review that over the weekend hopefully.
Can you hook it up to a water hose with 40psi ?
No, it's made to pump water out of a bucket and disperse it through the shower head.
I Like your video but not the product. I do think it is a good product for what it is intended for but I don't like it because of my planned use for it. I saw this product in someones sckoolie conversion and for many reasons mostly the safety issue it is not a good idea. Your review of this product really helped. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome. I'm glad the review video informed you.
I’ve watched lots of videos and the Hottap v2 is farrr superior. Pricier but well worth it
I didn't know about that, thanks for sharing. The next version up from this, the XC@20 is pretty awesome and I'll have to review it soon.
Do these items ship to the UK? Paul
I provided a link in my video description. I would think that Amazon would ship it to you.
The bigger Mr Heater shower has a shut off at the head. I believe it's the XCW20.
@@MarkThomasBuilder gotcha. What I'm gonna do short term is a gallon Jerry can, small submersible pump, just heat up water. Once I hit spring, I'll visit it again. Still love the video! Can't wait to finish this trailer and hit some sites. Thanks again
How would you compare to the zodi portable hot shower
I haven't tried the Zodi brand. The Mr Heater XCW20 is my favorite so far because it has a digital temp and it shuts off at the shower head.
@@MarkThomasBuilder so you can control the exact temperature because on the zodi it just has a dial but no idea of actual temperature
@@Americanmade71580 The digital temp is only on the top model. The other 2 have manual knobs like the zodi.
Can you replace the shower head with one featuring an on/off switch?
I'm not sure if you can. The next size up shower, the XCW20, has that feature. I'm hoping to review that within the next week or so.
So you have to get out of your shower to turn it on and off ?
Yes, that's correct. I believe the XCW20 Basecamp shower can be turned on/off inside the shower.
Great video . Thanks
Thank you! I'm planning on making a comparison video of all three models sometime very soon.
How long does a 5 gallon bucket of water last?
I don't recall the time it gave you, but it does last long enough to completely get showered and shampoo your hair.
Would it help to use warmer water to begin with?
I don't think it's really necessary. I've just used cold water and it heats it up to a very comfortable warm shower.
@@MarkThomasBuilder I was elk hunting Las nov in Wyoming and got pretty stinking
This should help with that, lol!
Does it have different settings on the shower head?
I think so. At least the bigger unit has a narrow and wide setting. Unfortunately I don't have this one anymore to check for you.
I plan on making one of my rooms of my tent into a bathroom can this be used inside the tent?
It's meant to have the unit outside the tent and the shower head inside.
Can I control the temp. Or is always hot
Yes, you can.
Is it have chargeable battery for pump
Yes, the battery is changeable.
Thanks
Awsome thank you
You bet!
I'm not so sure about the battery life on these, not to mention the bulk... I'm sure there are cheaper/smaller solutions out there.
The battery life isn't the greatest. I like the ability to plug it in, if you're around power.
Amazing
Thank you! Cheers!
Hahahah great video for such a random product hahah
Thanks, I like to try ways to keep it interesting, lol.
Can you hook this into a garden hose?
No, I don't believe so.
How fast did it run thru 2 gallons
I'll let you know. I'm making a comparison video this week between the 3 Mr.Heater shower unity.
6:06... so one has to get get pot of tent and touch button with wet fingers each time he wants to pause the shower? :(
It appears so with this model.
I'm going to be reviewing the Mr Heater XCW20 Model that I believe has the features you're looking for. The review will be out in about a month or so.
hi from Oamaru, Waitaki districts New Zealand. dam i just purchased a Coleman elite for 550 buck in our dollars.. any view on these?..i reckon regardless of brand they look like they have the same guts.
I haven't actually tried the Coleman brand. I'm planning on reviewing the other two Mr. Heater units this weekend.
Thanks for response. (its Saturday 12.23 a.m just past mid winter here and its frosty as hell) anyway i just opened the box looked at it and discovered the coleman aint have capability of on / off hot at shower hand price so it seems its gonna be full time on until shower finished, i guess if im desperate for hot water then again i dont want too much functions like start / stop. anyway is there any reliable such units with start / stop at handpiece?.
The Mr Heater XCW 20 has a on/off on the handle as well as an adjustable spray. It's their top of the line unit. I'm putting the video together very soon.
BEST. INTRO. EVER.
Thanks! I'm always trying to mix it up a bit.
I believe the upgraded model, the XCW20 includes that feature. I'm planning on making a video review of that model in a couple weeks.
how did you charge it?
Plug the ac adapter into it and let it charge.
Lol I literally just took a quick shower last week with one of the solar bag style, didn't even have a tent around me haha, was out in the middle of no where, so no watchers lol. I did throw a tarp up facing the wind too cut that down a bit. Heated some water over the fire to put in the bag to warm it up. I think the bag said 80 degrees lol. 32 outside.
@@DougRowan_photography I've never even seen anyone use those shower tents. They unnecessary. Just hang it on a tree branch and shower in nature.. isn't that why we go out into the bush? to get back into nature?
@@bicanoo_magic3452 I agree for the most part, mostly where I go I don't need anything, however here in Iowa, some of our campgrounds are open but showers/water are closed, which means there are usually no campers however that doesn't mean there aren't people occasionally lol... A couple weeks ago I was washing up in the morning only to look over and see someone walking around the far edge of the campground... This place is out in the middle of no where only a couple farms within driving distance but I guess one of the farmers wives walks lol. The way everything was positioned I wasn't showing anything but still I thought right then maybe I need to have one just in case haha. Usually I just leave shorts on anyhow if I'm somewhere like that. Rare case regardless. Nothing a tarp wouldn't do
@@DougRowan_photography Just use swimmers (Speedo's) and be done with it. Use liquid soap because you know the soap is going to get dirt on it.
It didn't occur to you to use one bucket?
I haven't watched this video in awhile, but I think I wanted to show how fast it pumps water out
Thanks...
You bet!
Looking sharp! Lol does this use a lot of water or can two gallons do all precious parts? lol
Haha, thanks! I'd say you can get close to a 3 minute shower. Would that be long enough?
I’m a truck driver was looking into getting one sometimes it’s hard to get to a truck stop to wash your precious parts lol....3 minutes should be enough to wash your butt and not smell lol....right now I just have a electric pump cheap but the water is cold no way to heat it....it’s all fun n games in the summer but not for winter lol
@@SoloMotherTrucker This would probably work great for your situation.
How is this unit holding up?
It works well. I used it a month ago and was happy with the water pressure and the nice warm water temperature.
Howany BTU is this unit?
10,000-17,000BTU's
This vs Joolca. What I like....uses small propane tank, is small in size, has faucet. What I hate....hoses not long enough, flimsy, no shut off to shower head.
Great presentation.
Thanks, the bigger model has a shut off at the shower head. I made another video a few months ago showing the differenced between all 3 Mr Heater portable shower units.
@@MarkThomasBuilder How long is the hose for the shower wand? Newegg has the xw18 for $199 shipped.

And it washs your clothes untill Smoking 😂
Pretty amazing shower, huh!
I JUST GOT MINE AND THE WATER WILL NOT GET HOT ?
It's hard to say what the most likely problem is. If you have a full propane tank and if you tested it first by plugging it in to power and it's still not heating the water, then I'd contact their customer support. If it works that way but not by the battery, maybe it's the battery itself or the battery connections. Hope that helps.
@@MarkThomasBuilder ANOTHER TH-camR SAID IT COULD BE THE WATER IS TO COLD GOING INTO THE HEATER ?
I'm not sure about that. I've mostly used room temperature water.
It only heats water about 40 degrees, so if you start with 32 degree water it will only be about 70 degrees. Start with 70 degree and it will be 110 degree..
I really don’t like the fact that you cannot turn the water off from the showerhead.
There's another model, the next size up that allows that. I'm going to review it as soon as it warms up a little outside.
My XW18 works 3 times then stop working... I changed the battery for a brand new one because the led indicated that the battery wasn't charged... I contacted twice the Boss (M. Heater) company through their website... I never had an answer from them... My second message to them was incendiary... at least!
@@MarkThomasBuilder I open the heater and found that the battery was working well... The electronic board is out... They never answer to my questions... I backpack from my trailer all year round... I'm retired and I don't have too much money to replace it....I'm completely pissed off with Mr Heater!
Yeah, that sounds frustrating. I had a warranty claim with another tool brand recently and I wasn't getting anywhere online. I ended up calling them and talking to a rep who wasn't helpful and then asked for a manager. The manager finally fixed my problem, but it took 30 minutes on the phone. I wish I didn't have to go through all that, but the manager was friendly and helpful. I'm not sure if you can reach someone at Mr Heater, but it might be worth a shot to call them.
