  • Sure, rearview mirrors are cool -- but how do they actually work? How can the same piece of glass have two different amounts of reflection? Join Josh as he explains the science behind these handy devices.
    Whether the topic is popcorn or particle physics, you can count on the HowStuffWorks team to explore - and explain - the everyday science in the world around us on BrainStuff.

      I've been driving the same car for 29 years, and it was already 20 years old when I bought it for $300....that moment passed a long time ago. Sometimes newer isn't necessarily better. My old rolla is nearing 50 years as a daily driver, me being the third owner. Easy to work on. Not much to break. 50mpg. It came with a radio, heater, windshield washers and a cigarette lighter.

      Then I tried pushing my blinker forward on mine...sure enough I had tilt steering.

    In your animation of the mirror, in daylight mode both the bright and the dim reflections are going in almost the same direction (the bright one hitting the eyes and the dim one hitting the chest) but when the magic tab is toggled the two images are at 45 degrees or so.

  • @powdermnky007
    @powdermnky007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Some rear view mirrors can actually continue to dim the lights progressively, the more you move them. Throw the tab, and if you still need dimmer, try moving it by hand. The first time I found this out, i was like "my whole life has been a lie" how did I not know this.

  • @Nozerone
    @Nozerone 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    0:38 If you have to do that, then you have your side mirrors positioned incorrectly. If you have to look over your shoulder to make sure a car isn't in your blind spot before switching lanes, then your side mirrors are positioned incorrectly. If you can see the side of your car in your side mirrors, then your side mirrors are positioned incorrectly.
    Ideally what should happen. You first see the car in the center rear view mirror. As the car comes up along side you it reaches a point where the front can be seen in your side mirror, and back in your center mirror. The car moves up next to you more, and you then should be able to see the front of the car next to you with your eyes, and the back of the car in your side mirror. The only way you should be able to see the side of your own car, is if you have a domed side mirror.
    This is very possible to do. I have done it successfully with every car I have owned. The only time I ever have to look over my shoulder to check traffic, is when I'm driving someone else's car.

    • @3omar000

      +Alarm Tech911 right, because if they chose not to do such a video it would prove that they don't care, and we wouldn't want that now would we?

      +Mike Koehler wtf, I read this comment today and it seems so bitchy. I probably didn't mean to sound demanding but it seems like it XD

      lol, no problem. I didn't mean to make it sound so bitchy either. In fact I kind of just laughed at it. No worries.

    the only reason i clicked on this video is because i was confused on what tab you are talking about, still after watching the video, ive never seen or heard of those tabs

      Bro, I've never noticed it before, its more hidden on the back side though.

    Wow. I just purchased a small car as a substitute to my Jeep which has electro chromatic rear view mirror. And my Nissan doesn't. Now I can easily dodge those idiots behind me without spraining my back.

    backwards? do we flip the tab forward or backward?

  • @MegaHighflyer10
    @MegaHighflyer10 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    also u can prove this by simply angling your head lower and looking up into the dimmed rear view mirror ..u will see the dim image and above it will have the "normal" reflection

    Also good to adjust it in the afternoon because you are actualy shorter after being up all due to gravity pulling on you spinal cord

  • @jeremylakenes6859
    @jeremylakenes6859 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So why does the mirror either point up or down. In other words...I can flip the tab up and adjust it to see the headlights brightly...then flip the tap down and it “dims”.
    Or I can flip the tab down and adjust it to see the headlights brightly, then flip the tab up and it “dims”. O
    One way I see the slight reflection of my seat, and the other way I see a slight reflection of the ceiling. Is there two pieces of glass? Or just refracting.?

    The automatic dimming mirrors transmit much more light than the old tried and true flip rear view mirror. I wish my new car with its fancy auto dimming mirror could protect my eyes nearly as well as the old school flip mechanism rear view mirror.

    I never knew how much I needed it until I bought a car that didn't come with one. I also moved to NY where for some reason a lot of people think it's okay to drive with their high beams on when they're driving on the highway.

      +Bungman Agforty that arrow thing is only for the us market i believe. I've driven almost every brand of cars in EU and not one of them had it. Talking about cars aged from 1960-2015

    Wow, I'm really stupid, I thought it was the other way around! I thought the dim setting was for the morning when the ambient light out is too much. And the bright setting was for night when you can't see as well, lol. Well I'm photosensitive to daylight so probably....
