I use to see Ms Payton a lot in my old area in West LA. Orlando is definitely telling the truth about Jaleel. The problem is Jaleel wasn’t very liked due to his entitlement and colorism issues.
If that's even true, it could have been the case of the female cast member being jealous. Like Esther Roll was to Jimmy Walker, like Janet was to Will Smith. Clearly these women care more about the attention and clout than they do the money.
@C-Lyfe85 Keep making it goofy. Esther Roll and the John Amos had problems with the show from the beginnings. Esther Roll is the one who fought to have a father on the show in the first place. They wanted to show a broken black famous. The show went down when they catered to the minstrel show aspect of Jimmy Walker. NO ONE LIKED JALEEL. Literally men, women, and other children. You and Jaleel are the only ones who think that dude is a star. How many versions of Steve were they going to come up with. 😂
Once he was added and POPULAR, the NINJA'S head became BIG on and PROBABLY OFF THE SCREEN. I heard that he was one of the many who was COSBY-BASHING!!!
Urkel was obviously a huge part of the show, but as a Black 90s kid, Harriet and Carl made the show feel warm and relatable. They brought balance to the show, as did the other ensemble characters. Characters like Urkle and JJ from Good Times can’t have a show just on their own. It would be too much. They need the others for balance. Jaleel needs to stop acting like everybody else was indispensable.
@@JM-to3hy Then why didn’t he get a spin-off? Remember Family Matters was a spin off from Perfect Strangers to follow Harriets home life. Cookie characters like Urkel NEVER get a stand-alone show because producers knows they get super irritating outside of their context. A show needs heart first.

@Firefly-ht9fp no problem. I'm not surprised he was a mean kid, but I am surprised he's still that way. Getting alot of fame and money early on can do alot do a developing person. Unfortunately it doesn't appear he's grown out of it and that's a problem.
Apart of me understands that he was under pressure and I can see in the episodes of how much work he really had to put in to give us a good show but it doesn't matter how much pressure you're put under, you still have to treat everybody the right way. It's like doctors and nurses or manager assistance. They get put under a lot of pressure as well, but yet you still have to treat everybody with respect.
I think Urkel has gotten to big for his own good. He's not even good looking he needs to stop being cocky. That the attitude Jo Marie was talking about
Bla Bla keep being influenced by a bitter sadistic old lady, who's mad that the show was supposed to be about her, but Urkel came, the audience liked him mroe than the rest. Stop liking the fact that other black people are successful and be happy for the black man's success
He didn't age shame his elders, but respected them and followed the old adage "If you have nothing good to say, then say nothing at all." Unlike Good Times, Family Matters' elders stayed put and a much better show came about due in part to that fact.
With All due respect. 1. Jo Marie Payton is ONLY complaining because she DIDN'T get exactly what she wanted.😂 2. The show originally was supposed to be about her character and her family. Which to be honest wouldn't have lasted long on TV . She was holding resentment and ANGER towards a kid who did NOTHING but audition for a part and succeed at it. 3. I Believe her when she said that Urkel as a kid may have been a little bit annoying and arrogant as a kid/teen, but who WASN'T that way when growing up. 4. At atleast 40 years of age at the time , she had NO business beefing with a kid. Especially when that kid DIDN'T have any real power at time. He showed up and got the job. 5. She should have been complaining to the Higher Ups in charge of the show trying to get them to change it back to the original format , or follow through on their promise to give her a spin off.
The Key and Peele sketch of Family Matters, is so true! It's what the show actually became. With Urkel as the main focus, the later episodes become crazy.

Hi Lailah, I really like when you put out content like this. It is so interesting to hear about the back story of my teenage shows. Great video...Thanks!👌🏾👍🏾👏🏾🤗
I don't understand how saying he's trying to respect his elders and avoid an argument with her is considered age-shaming-that doesn't make sense to me. I think we were all taught to respect our elders. He didn't call her old, he just pointed out the age difference. As a young man, his tolerance for conflict might be different, and his comment about wanting to physically fight her may have been in response to a request to make his character more despicable for the show. There seems to be some misunderstanding of the context. It's important to remember that Jaleel White was a kid growing up on a major TV show, and there were two very different generations on set. The transplants from Perfect Strangers have every right to feel some type of way, but let's be honest-*Family Matters* was about to be canceled before Urkel came along and saved it. I don't think anyone was truly in the wrong here, but we have to consider the huge age gap and the fact that Jaleel spent the majority of his adolescence and early adulthood on that show. We all get on our family members' nerves as we get older and more confident. So, cut the guy some slack-everyone could use a little more understanding.
I’m going to defend Jaleel a LITTLE because I attended a talk he gave a long time ago and he talked about as Urkle’s popularity exploded the adults on cast were not shy about their resentment. And as a child adolescent who’s just having fun on a show it had to be confusing when the adults were acting so weird around him. Not saying he’s not some shrinking violet, he’s not. But the adults could’ve focused more of their ire with the producers. And the producers could’ve probably mediated better to find a medium on the show’s focus.
Now it's coming back to me! That one scene in that particular episode where Harriet put her finger in Gangster Dawg (Urkel) face talking about " you better check that attitude at the door!" I believe she really meant that!!! That angry face she made was REAL!!!
TGIF WAS THE SHYT!!! I do loved that family matters was the spin-off of perfect strangers when she was an elevator operator! Balky was my dude on perfect strangers

@kristanoneal I believe that. Jo Marie had the same issue that Esther Rolle had with Good Times shifting from being her show to becoming all about the JJ bufoonery.
@@JustJohnda and that’s crazy to me.. I wouldn’t care as long as what I created was doing well.. it doesn’t have to be centered around the person who made the show even if tht was the point
Fr. I'm not even from Chicago and that show was known as the "Urkel show " or Urkel in our house😂👍. Jo Marie sounds ridiculous. She was beefing with a kid at the time instead of the Network execs who took her opportunity and gave it to someone else.
I just want to say that Ms Payton was always so sweet to me. I am from West LA and I use to see her all the time at the Vons on Fairfax and Pico back in the 90’s. She stayed in the same area as me when I was younger. Jaleel is a colorist and, as nice looking as he is, he was the problem on why no BW wanted him due to his entitlement issues. Dude is from Culver City not to shy away from West LA and, around that time it wasn’t a lot of blk ppl who lived there. Just like all the BM I’ve known who went to school in predominantly nonblk neighborhoods they always lie and say how no BW wanted them. His behavior could have been checked by his father but that is a different story. Therefore, since I know what I know about Jaleel I am on Ms Payton’s side. And I would also like to add that Orlando who is another LA native also spoke about Jaleel’s behavior and he told not one lie!
🥱Im waiting on him to come out of the closet. I heard this long ago. Jaleel is his own enemy. And it sucks to need people to be checking for you because WE AREN'T!
Fr😂. My mother would NEVER let me fight a woman. UNLESS I was in danger. Anything other than that, I was in trouble. Why was a woman atleast 40 years old at the time beefing with a kid? 😂
So we're going to act like Family Matters would have lasted NINE seasons without Jaleel White's Steve Urkel character? A show staying on the air for one year short of a decade is super rare in Hollywood, and that feat does not happen if Jaleel never joins the cast. Facts, whether you like him or not. 💯
That show wouldn’t have lasted past the first season if it wasn’t for Jaleel’s character. They should thank their lucky stars that he was placed on “ Family Matters”. It was no Cosby Show.
1. Just because someone story NEVER changed DOESN'T mean she's telling the truth. People can recite lies enough that they actually start to believe it . 2. Nobody else has ever Confirmed her claims of a fight 😂. 3. If Urkel was so violent towards women then how come Laura who worked closely with Urkel for years NEVER said anything like this?
This seems like the situation between Will Smith and Janet Hubert. She thought that the show should have been more about her, but it was more about him instead.
Personally I belive Family Matters would've been cancel early if Urkle didn't came on to lively it up ...every preteen 90s kid was hook on his funny nerdie ways 😂

And also he did not invite her to the reunion out of spite even while people assume it was because of her past in adult films, but he and Darius reportedly has violent pasts with their significant others. Orlando Brown also said it himself that Jaleel did him dirty during his time working on the set. He was the common denominator for the show going downhill
I believe her.

Urkel damn near 50. He needs to stop🛑

The seasoned actresses and the young start butting heads always seems to be the thing

No, the problem is the jealous female cast members,
who want all the clout and attention, instead of just thinking about the money.
There was no way Janet hubert, Joe Marie, Esther Rolle,
could compete with Will Smith, Jimmy Walker, or Jaleel White.
Not in the comedy capacity, they don't have it in them to be "likable".
Gen X here: I loved watching Perfect Strangers.
Me too
Jaleel brought this on himself by gossiping about other people. I mean u get what u put out. If you're airing out skeletons on other people. U will get the same in return. And everybody can't b the problem lol
I'm sorry this guy gives me he-man black woman hater vibes ."I believe it 🤷🏽♀️

I like the throw back tea as a gen X. Keep them coming. Also you look beautiful 😍
She probably left the show because Jaleel became “the show”
Same thing happened on Good Times. The focus shifted to “Dynomite” J.J.
@@dianesherrod6227 but it was cancelled after she left. So maybe they needed her.
@@chrisk2734 😂😂
The she WASN'T canceled
They Completed 10 full seasons and had a Big Finale .
The show would NOT have lasted 3 seasons if it was just about Jo Marie.
It was me on the other post that brought this up... he needed a pop for acting up the way he did lol
Jo Marie collected a check for NINE YEARS! And left after the show jumped networks to CBS. The writing was already on the wall.
Chile not my Jojo and Jaleel scrapping..my lil 90s kid heart can't take it.
You look beautiful Sis! 😍
He can age shame all he wants, i believe it
Mcdonalds + TGIF was my fridays. The good times
Great content Lailah . I believed that his parents had set absolutely no boundaries or limited boundaries with him. He seemed not to be grounded in reality. He thinks he is bigger than he actually is… And , I have absolutely no idea who or what he is dealing with in his life. It couldn’t have been easy to be the breadwinner of the family. Nonetheless this was a good story. Looking forward to hearing more. Thank you 🥰🎯🎯🎯🎯💯💯💕
Girl, thank you for keeping us up with what’s going on. I haven’t heard any other blogger speak about this. But it makes a lot of sense now thank you.

He will have poor book sales. No one is checking for him.
I agree, if Marie Jo write a book, then she could tell her side so we don’t have to make assumptions.

@joypeaceandhappiness1501 - Thanks for your response. I guess I missed that episode. I never knew that Jaleel White was such a meanie on the Family Matters set. What a shock!
@Firefly-ht9fp no problem. I'm not surprised he was a mean kid, but I am surprised he's still that way. Getting alot of fame and money early on can do alot do a developing person. Unfortunately it doesn't appear he's grown out of it and that's a problem.
I definitely remember TGIF!
So he ruined it for everybody, got it 😅
I think Urkel has gotten to big for his own good.

Jaleel is a narcissist, he’s always been that and I’ve been saying he’s full of himself even years before I even knew what a narcissist was.
He didn't age shame his elders, but respected them and followed the old adage "If you have nothing good to say, then say nothing at all." Unlike Good Times, Family Matters' elders stayed put and a much better show came about due in part to that fact.
With All due respect.
1. Jo Marie Payton is ONLY complaining because she DIDN'T get exactly what she wanted.😂
Perfect Strangers was good with Balki... I'm telling my age 🤣😭 but I look good for my age. 😀

The crazy part is the show was extremely positive and good for our community: we ain’t need the background info
I broke my 🦵🏿 and pushed people out the way to get here 😭🤣
I used to wonder how come Jaleel wasn't together with the "Family Matters" reunion. This confirms it... He's a jerk!!!
Yes I definitely wanna see a video about good times!
Yes
Great content 😊
I’m going to defend Jaleel a LITTLE because I attended a talk he gave a long time ago and he talked about as Urkle’s popularity exploded the adults on cast were not shy about their resentment. And as a child adolescent who’s just having fun on a show it had to be confusing when the adults were acting so weird around him. Not saying he’s not some shrinking violet, he’s not. But the adults could’ve focused more of their ire with the producers. And the producers could’ve probably mediated better to find a medium on the show’s focus.
I think he respected his elders with that answer.
They older lady that played the grandmother said the disrespect was a two way street .. The lady said the lady who played Harriet was mad that the show is her vehicle for her & she would get pissed very easily at him ..
as she should have been she started the show….

All I know is that as a Chicago kid in the 90s, we didn't even call it Family Matters lol. We called it Steve Urkel.
Fr. I'm not even from Chicago and that show was known as the "Urkel show " or Urkel in our house😂👍.
Jo Marie sounds ridiculous. She was beefing with a kid at the time instead of the Network execs who took her opportunity and gave it to someone else.
ATP…I’m tired of Jaleel. Always complaining and ain’t doing nothing
I adore your winter realness… love it❤
I just want to say that Ms Payton was always so sweet to me.
The fact that I clicked on this so fast 😮
🥱Im waiting on him to come out of the closet. I heard this long ago. Jaleel is his own enemy. And it sucks to need people to be checking for you because WE AREN'T!
What a disappointment he turned out to be!
Straight up!!
He was/is something else.😂😂😂😂
This has me cackling 😂 not Urkel trying to square up
I don't believe for one moment that Jaleel White wanted to physically fight her. His mother didn't play. She didn't go for nonsense.
Exactly. She should be angry at the network higher ups for NOT keeping their promises to her . NOT Jaleel who was a kid at the time 😂
That show wouldn’t have lasted past the first season if it wasn’t for Jaleel’s character. They should thank their lucky stars that he was placed on “ Family Matters”. It was no Cosby Show.
I read an article about Jaleel White, the article said he doesn't get along with women very well and he's kind of mental, so yeah there you have it.
That’s why he dates and married the women who will put up with his b.s.
She not lying her story has never changed.
At this point Jaleel, you’re the problem 🤦🏾♀️
Personally I belive Family Matters would've been cancel early if Urkle didn't came on to lively it up ...every preteen 90s kid was hook on his funny nerdie ways 😂
