Being lonely doesn't feel so bad after reading literature and seeing movies about this lonely characters, that with every demon they still achieve the important things on life, and even more: Meaning and purpose.

I feel what makes Cohle unique amongst most "literally me" characters is that although he's lonely and hopeless, he's a detective who day by day gets better, instead of a man deteriorating into criminality
Yeah his arc in the show goes from nihilistic to optimistic. He went from despair to hopeful. "Once there was just dark, so if you ask me, the lights' winning". Perfect arc and perfect characterization. He's actually a good literally me character.
Rust didn't care about the law. But he knew what was right and wrong. He had a good mission and he saw it through whatever the cost. Buying street drugs, covering up a crime scene, kidnapping, etc etc. He was a crooked cop, but in the best sense imo.

First Season of True Detective had everything perfect: 1)Perfect setting (Lower Louisiana,swamp zones with mixed contrast between heavy industries/ urban areas and rural zones 2)Perfect plot (first starts off as a simple murder,then it evolves into something almost meta-physical) 3)Perfect duo of characters 4)Perfect cinematography 5)Perfect intro This season without Rust Cohle would've been empty:a guy that loses his family,gets used so much to drugs and killings that he's basically the most stoic,cold and honest man ever living,with a mind which travels over the speed of light Rust Cohle was designed specifically for McConaughey,and the season was just perfect
The setting also amplifies this show. It's rare to see American media shot in the deep coastal south. Down in the swamplands. It feels foreign because Hollywood and other media studios don't really go down there. It's such a great setting.

I've seen it 7 times over, now I'm waiting to forget some of it so I can rewatch again. Although I'm afraid the whole thing might be etched into my long term memory by now.
everything about season 1 was perfect, i just rewatched it recently and coincidentally this popped up on my feed. Only thing i would have liked more is if they showed the town to get a glimpse into what people were like in the town, the bars, the streets... etc
I have watched Hannibal, Mindhunter types of shows before true detective season 1 so i don't have much expectations regarding story line or brutality etc etc just watched TD s1 for Rust cohle and it was worth it...now this character resembles inside me for eternity.
