10mm and 357 Mag are extremely similar. Both have similar bullet weights and velocities. Energies between high 400's to around 800. That's pound for pound the same. It's like the old 308 vs 30-06 debate. With standard production ammo they're the same. Of course 30-06 has better case capacity bur is never really utilized because of gun safety reasons unless reloaded that way. Please quit saying 357 is more powerfull because it's not. Maybe 1 hardcast round from Buff Bore have slightly more but that's like the only one. Also remember we're talking about pistols. Of course you can get both as a pcc and will increase energies . But pound for pound 10mm is better because of capacity and the newer polymer frames guns come with goodies like optics ready, flared magwell, multi barrels you can get, and pic rails for other attachments. Those are better to have over a revolver. Of course revolvers can also have its own advantages but in all, 10mm's have much more.

I think I remember you saying you discharged a .357 magnum round once and for some reason, you were not wearing hearing protection...Do I remember that correctly? In that video you made a big point about just how unbelievably loud it was and probably caused hearing damage. I think this is something to consider since we will most likely not be wearing hearing protection in a defensive shooting. All typical defensive cartridges are loud, but when I shoot a 357 at the range, it is noticeably louder than a 9mm, with hearing protection.

You're absolutely right. The only reason that I carry a 4" 1911 45 is that when I had the cash to upgrade my EDC back in November 2020,my local gun shop didn't have a Ruger or S&W 357 mag revolver. The only other handgun in the store that I would carry was a Springfield RO 1911 45 with a 4" barrel and aluminum frame. There were dozens of polymer 9mms but I'd trust my swinging cock better than a plastic 9mm. I grew up when semi autos and 9mms didn't even exist in the US except for a few people that had Lugers as war trophies. We had single action revolvers in 22 lr and 357s and double action revolvers in the same calibers. If you wanted a small gun to carry in your waistband or pocket, you got a 38 snubbie. Hell, John Wesley Hardin didn't have a semi auto 9mm, he had a single action revolver probably in 44-40 because most people didn't have 45 Colts except the Army. That's why it's called the Colt Single Action Army or SAA for short. That ol dude killed 40 people in his life and there are enough surviving documents that says that's about the real number. So I don't feel underguned with six rounds of 357s or nine rounds of 45s one little bit. It helps that I've been shooting since 1973 too.

Modern 9mm is easily more effective than .44-40.
Polymer Handguns are a ridiculously well proven technology. I love my 357, but my glocks will keep Functioning reliably after a round count that would make my GP 100 gummy.

I do think 5-6 rounds is legitimately not enough for self defense, regardless of caliber and skill.
You are giving zero room for error in a situation you don't get to pick and won't be ideal against an unknown number of threats. It's often enough more than one threat so that's worth considering.. 5-6 rounds can be enough for a lot of scenarios, it's not useless, but needing more happens much more often than I'd be willing to consider safe to discredit.
And I don't consider reloading, especially a revolver, viable for most situations. Even with a speed loader or clip

When my brother was in the N.M.S.P. he was ranked 3rd best shot with his issue 686, I have personally seen him fire 6 rounds, & then re - load from the belt loops fire 6 more rounds of factory police duty loads in 12 seconds ! If you have never seen any body rapid fire a .357 magnum on a 3-1/2 barrel....it is a sight to see! And the stainless steel barrel of that 686 is hot enough to fry an egg on! 12 rounds in 12 seconds! and he was just the 3rd best! He also did some duty as the door gunner in the N.M.S.P Helicopter! Using a Remington 700 in .308 & a M16 .5.56Nato! But he didn't get all his shooting skills at the Police academy! Growing up we have an uncle that was on the U.S.M.C. pistol team that used S& W double action revolvers; and he was also a Marine marksman & sharpshooter- I remember once he was home on leave during deer season ( N.M. mule deer) I was nine years old at the time & got to go with him while the other brothers hunted with my dad & grandfather; I got to carry my uncles " deer rifle" a military issue M 14 7.62/ .308 I don't know how he got it off base in San Diego/ Pendleton, but I remember how small I was at 9 years old & how big & heavy an M14 is ! That being said, since I've moved next to the southern border (El Paso for a year, now I'm Cruces, which actually has even more crime), I've witnessed a lot of gang violence and a few drive-bys, and I'm thinking that there's a lot to be said for violence of action when a car full of Mexican gangsters comes rolling up on you. I'm pretty sure I'll want to be carrying a full size semi auto pistol if I get caught in the middle of that stuff. I'm actually planning on getting an AR pistol chambered in 300 blackout and carrying it in a backpack when I'm feeling especially insecure, but I'll just keep it in my van most of the time. For everyday carry, I'd rather have something little, and nothing beats a .357 Snubby when your priority is comfortable concealment with something that's competently powerful.

One of my favorite combos, is my Desert Eagle MKXIX in .357mag loaded with Hornady 158gr XTP hollow points. It's just a tack driving combo with plenty of power, and 9+1 capacity. Only problem is, with my department regulations for off duty qualifications (quarterly) we cannot use magnum rounds on departmental ranges, and the off site instructor, I used to use for quals, no longer follows new protocols. I would stick with my P229(.357SIG) but it has over 50,000rnds through it, and Sig is no longer offering the P229 in .357SIG. I generally carried Speer Gold Dot 125gr hollow points, but I experimented with Buffalo Bore Barnes Tac XP which they load up to 1425fps. Due to cost I stuck with the Speer.
That brings me to my current candidate, to possibly replace my P229(.357SIG) the FNX45. I was considering going back to the P220, but with the capacity of the FNX45 being 15+1, I'm considering going that route, if this one stays reliable and I can't break it before I'm ready to make the actual switch. I'm opting for buffalo bore 160gr Barnes Tac XP at 1255fps. I consider a good carry cartridge/pistol combo to deliver at or over 500ftlbs of energy. The 160gr out of the.45 is very manageable, for follow up shots. I shot a USPSA style course with some folks and the pistol performed great, with Hornady Critical Defense 185gr, and I put another 200rnds through at the departmental range on multiple department qualification courses of fire. Both the P229(.357SIG) and FNX45 shot smoother than our departmental Glock22s with 180gr cartridges.
In a perfect world, Sig would start making my preferred pistol again, or at least do a limited run, or offer the option to have one built through their "Custom Shop" (P320 mix and match site). I would even be willing to the gouge they would put on it for being custom. It would be worth it to me, to at least two or three more, to have on standby. I should have had the foresight to do so back in 2014, when you could still get them. Hopefully the FNX survives and pans out, otherwise, I guess I'll go back to the P220, and just carry more mags?

Quirky laws where I live forbid detachable magazines on rifles/carbines (only exception is .22), ARs are not an legal, only police and military use them. Best thing we can get our hands on are lever guns, lever gun + 357 packs a punch, enough to defend anyone. Add to that that you can put rails, scopes and lights on modern lever guns and you're pretty much all set. You really don't know how fortunate you all are in the US, appreciate the freedoms you have. So yes, 357 rocks.

I so greatly appreciate and enjoyed the video. Papa wishing you well 😊

I've thought about carrying my Ruger Alaskan .454 but hadn't seriously considered it because of the weight. But now that you mention it I think I'm gonna order a new holster for it. My reasoning is similar, I don't want to have to use it, but if I have to, I don't want to have to shoot it more than once or twice. A solid hit with a .454 should deter anything in N. America. I may be wrong but it seems easier to justify firing 1 - 6 rounds of .454 vs. 20 rounds of 9 mm. If I have to shoot I don't want my target continuing to attack me. It seems to me that at most the only reminder you want of your attacker in the courtroom is his picture, you don't want his drooling, colostomy bag wearing ass in a wheelchair while his momma cries big old crocodile tears and tells the judge and jury what a good boy he is/was.

357 magnum key word just has to be Versatility. 110 - 125 JHPs rounds for PSD, the heavier bullets, from the rifle, 130 - 180 grain ,for putting food on the table. My rifle is a 22 inch long barrel single shot break action 357 magnum with a 3x9x40 scope on top.
Rifle and Handgun using the same ammo, or if you are a reloader load for the rifle very hotly loaded and higher pressures and for the revolver, just lighter loading, target loads, and something kinda hot for EDC, the Remington 125 JHP would work in that situation.
Home Defence, due the possibility of a passthru, at home I use the 148 grain Full Wadcutter, almost a very light target loading.

I'm not to concerned about pass through as most energy power dumped in vital area. with the trama done to actual live deer I 100 percent belive a a human larger than me and I'm 5,10.- 267lbs wouldn't walk away from from it. and in our nc foothills and mountains if fishing, hiking, camping I would load 255- 280 gr hard cast, gac check 1050to1100 fps and it will take care of our black bears and wild hogs if necessary. papa wishing yall well 😊

My caliber requirement is simple. It needs to be able to penetration at least 14inches in ballistic gelatin. Thats really it.
Once a preferred/ideal carry method is determined the actual firearm and caliber combination centers around platform reliability, ease of follow up shots and capacity. In that order.

  • @ultrafuel2559
    @ultrafuel2559 ปีที่แล้ว

100% agree. More power is better. People shot by cops with AR15s usually drop. Hot 357 Sig is comparable to standard 357 magnum and the guns are easier to carry. That being said, if your carrying a 454 Casull carry comfort is probably not a factor you consider... I'll be converting a FN FNX to 460 Rowland for daily carry. 15 +1 of 1000 fpe. If they made a 50BMG that fit down the front of my pants that held 15 rounds and didn't kick that's what I would carry.
