    We also have Rich Hall, and SNL writer Alan Zweibel, who wrote some of the greatest sketches in the 1975-80 run. Ebersol brought him back, along with James Downey and Herb Sargent for the 1984-85 season -- another reason that season stands out among the best in the entire run.

      @@itiswhatitaintanditaintwha1427 Dick Ebersol left on a high note. He probably felt a sense of vengeance a year later upon the return of Lorne Michaels, whose first year back led to cancellation, before Lorne convinced NBC head honcho Brandon Tartikoff to give him one more year. Michaels had been very critical about the Ebersol years, yet 85-86 (his first year back) was one of the worst seasons ever, with the exception of the Jean Doumanian season (80-81).

    I BET nobody knows that Martin Short, with his cigar and "bouncy C," is doing old IRVING CAESAR to a "T"! I used to see Irving at Musso & Frank's in Hollywood, in the '90s. He was one hundred years old, and he behaved EXACTLY like that, waving his cigar, saying, "I wrote "Tea For Two"! I wrote 'Swanee'! Ya wanna hear it? -- SWAAAANNEE! Howiloveya, Howiloveya, MYYYY dear old Swaneee.....!" He didn't need a bouncy C! He'd just up and sing it. Yes, he really DID write "Swanee" with Gershwin in 1920 and "Tea For Two" with Vincent Youmans in 1924. Helluva guy.

  • @theBaron0530
    @theBaron0530 3 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    I never knew this was supposed to be a parody of "Broadway Danny Rose". I just loved everyone's Yiddish vaudeville characters. Irving Cohen was one of the best characters Martin Short ever did on "SCTV". "Give me a 'C', a bouncy 'C'-Oh, William B, oh William B, da fella, sittin' right here, next ta me..."
    And I always loved Murphy's Gumby, as the old Yiddish comedian. Oy!
    Billy Crystal used his character several years before, on "SOAP!" Billy, as Jody Dallas, had a psychiatric episode in which he thought he was a little old Yiddish man from Poland, named Julius Kassendorf.
    And Christopher Guest shows the range that he has, from a mild-mannered man from North Carolina who raises bloodhounds, to an effeminate choreographer or director, to a British metal guitarist, to an old Yiddish actor who appeared in "Pickles on Parade".

    • @deecook8393

      Harry Shearer was a child player on "Your Show of Shows" when he was 10 years old so he was used to working in sketch comedy with a lot of pressure. Back then, Dick Ebersol liked to keep everyone on edge and had all the comics competing with each other for his okay for what would get on the air, so some players were sure to feel bad week after week. Max Liebman who produced and directed "Your Show of Shows" never did stuff like that. Harry wasn't okay with being treated like shit in his 40's after being treated like gold when he was 10.
