This video provides a visual understanding of what's happening under your car while you drive. What we’re looking at, starting with the right we have the tire, wheel, and brake caliper. Moving left you can see the spring and damper. Towards the bottom is what Ram calls the “Articulink, an additional linkage in the lower control arm which allows for greater articulation of the front axle. Above the axle you can see the track bar or Panhard rod. You want to allow up and down motion of the suspension, but prevent lateral and longitudinal motion. The track bar is used to restrict side to side movement.
Above the track bar you can see the drag link. This is part of the steering linkage and is used to rotate the right wheel, which is then linked by a cross-car-tie-rod to rotate the left wheel. Finally, we have the jounce bumper or ‘bump stop’, which is used to prevent contact between the axle and the frame when suspension travel is excessive due to shock impacts.

For more satisfaction from suspensions, search "RC Shock Testing on 4 in. Whoops" on TH-cam.
I love that video. Shows RC car driving over these little jumps in slow motion and the suspension looks so fluid!

If you want insanely realistic offroad vehicle physics play Spintires. It's just plain satisfying seeing suspensions of an 8X8 MAZ react to all kinds of terrain. I use to play it and just look at the wheels all the time! :D

That's definitely true. I've played a fair bit of Beamng and it's got a long way to go before it looks *stunning*. It looks great now, if you like crumpling cars :P But the suspension has some work to be done.

Oh master master, what do you think about taking shocks form a heavier 4x4 and using them on a smaller lighter one. I have a nice lifted lada niva on big tires and have rear monotube gas shocks from a grand Cherokee and they are really nice and comfortable with better articulation. But im still hesitant about the front because im afraid i just got lucky with the damp rate and stuff in the back. Some people say a shock is a shock but still. Your input would be greatly appreciated, your awesome. Thank you for the education, you are making the world a better place.

Would be cool to see more off road themed stuff. I don't think I've ever seen anyone give an Engineering Explained level of detail explanation of things like a dry ice intake, tire cutting, driveshaft brakes, or really any of the technical details used by off roaders or mud trucks. Plus if you did a video of the proper and safe way to lift a truck while having it work the way it's supposed to, and still be every bit if not more durable than it was off of the assembly line, then maybe I'd stop seeing so many geniuses driving around with giant lift blocks clamped to toothpick axels on the front end of a truck

I always wondered that the "panhard rod" moves in a circular movement and therefore tilt slightly the whole axle on one side from the longitudinal center of the car when the spring is compressed... Seams strange but must be logical or maybe some clever devices counteract this motion.
A video on it might be a good subject ;-)

I understand that u-joints has some serious issues with vibration at high angles, due to them not being constant velocity. I'm assuming their durability over standard Rzeppa CVs significantly outweighs that disadvantage; and using something like a Thompson CV or similar would be more more expensive. Also, doesn't Panhard rods exhibit tracking issues (the axle basically travelling asymmetrically along an arc of a circle), something like a Watt linkage could mitigate (of course not eliminate completely)? But then again, reason it's not being used I'm guessing is most probably an issue of cost.
