I’m a soil scientist and I’m putting out videos on soil science all the time. In my opinion these have two totally different functions and is comparing apples to oranges. 🙂 great video!
HA! I've just seen both the science videos and now this one.. NOW I KNOWETH ALL TEH THINGS!!!~! Seriously though.. great info! Much thanks.. Great to know the function of both and how these apply to plants.. I'm concluding that a mix of both, depending on the plant's specific needs and the soil it's mixed in, would be best.. As a gamer, this answer "it depends" to the question "which is best" is like music to my ears.. having all this info in my little head now just feels SO good! As bad as Kaylee is for my wallet, so good are you two to the stuff she makes me buy 😸😸🤜💖🤛
Vermiculite has a much higher cation exchange capacity (the ability to hold on to nutrients). I use both in my soil mixes to take advantage of their respective strengths, and mitigate their respective weaknesses.
I usually use perlite, but now I'll rethink vermiculite....for plants that like moist, but well draining soils. Good to know the differences, pros and cons.
Coughing through a cloud of perlite dust is just part of the process of planting/repotting. It's a rite of passage for your new plant, a welcoming ceremony of coughs. Thanks to your channel, i learned to "add soil to my perlite" and stopped getting root rot. Hope youre doing alright in this sucky year, thanks for everything.
Very helpful ... I started using vermiculite when the nursery was out of perlite . Since then used them interchangeably as I felt both are amendments and felt they will help the plant establish itself either way. Had success with both mediums
What are the environmental consequences of producing and using these materials? Could you make a video about environmentally friendly substrates or is it problematic when your sponsor uses peat in their soil mixes? I would love to see more videos about what you think about this, and about how to reuse and recycle soil mix 😊😊♻️🌿 I always learn new things from your videos so thank you 💕
Definitely a good video to do environmental impacts of the hort industry. It's been on my mind. I do hope that you get some of that through these videos, like the plant predictions, this one, rhipsalis. There's much we can do as plant lovers to be more positive forces.
Yes, agreed please make that video! Also, considering both are mined, I assume neither vermiculite nor perlite are super sustainable but is there one you'd say is better environmentally-speaking?
This! I actually just bought some perlite and honestly, didn’t even think about the fact that it’s mined, but my mind immediately jumped to the environmental impacts of mining.
Once again you have clarified something that every plant person needs to know, to have great soil mix. Excellent visuals and you have helped our plant babies.
Thank you so much for the information. I’ve watched a video and the person stated both perlite and vermiculite were similar and almost the same. I knew it wasn’t right so I searched your channel and glad I did.
Loved this video Summer! So many growers have this question and I feel it's a really important subject to cover. I have to add so much perlite into my soil medium, growing here in Central Florida. The weather is unlike growing in any other and the humidity makes it really tough, especially growing indoors, not just outdoors. You always teach me something new which is why I love growing and love your channel so much! 💕 There are so many different soil amendments to use so I appreciate you breaking it down so simple for all of us. Have a beautiful day and thank you from the bottom of my pots!😊🌸🍃
You look absolutely stunning today btw.. not that you don't look great other days. I just love that color on you! Have a great one! Thanks for all you do and share with us. It would be so great to meet you one day! I'd love to pick your brain on controlling pests with insects like you do indoors. Growing can be really difficult here sometimes depending on the season. The summers are brutal with the excessively intense sun and different pests, bugs, insects etc.
I love this Brooklyn girl! She is so informative, I am learning so much about plants from watching her videos. I am debating whether to enroll in one of her courses since her instructions are so precise and to the point. Honestly, I think she's worth every penny regardless what she may charge.
I love videos like this one, more please!!!! (Very much enjoyed your Houseplant Masterclass... you've no idea how much it helped me grow as a plant mom!!)
I love your videos, Summer! They are my favorite of the "plant lovers community" for all the wealth of information you provide. As a Biology teacher, I really appreciate that you always give the scientific names of plants. You go, girl! TFS!
This is probably one of the better videos I've seen on perlite vs vermiculite. You can never have too much information on soil amendments. I mainly use perlite since the vast majority of my collection is comprised of succulents. However, my front garden is compact and dries way too quickly so I've been considering mixing in a healthy amount of vermiculite when I freshen or replace the soil in late winter or early spring.
You are one of my favourites go-to when it comes to information about plant care. Thank you for contributing so much to the plant community, for that I am forever grateful. Take care and stay safe. Denmark over and out until next time 🎃🌿🌵💚
Now I know why my plants are drying out so quickly. I was using perlite thinking it would help retain moisture. This video changed my plant life. 🪴Thank you!
What do you think about Pumice over Perlite? Also I would like to add that I really appreciate your videos, this is just real information!!! Thank you!
Oh my god I'm so glad I found your channel again! When I was still a teen living with my parents I used to be obsessed with houseplants. I loved to watch your videos, but slowly lost interest in the topic. Now I'm moving in my own apartment and began thinking about it again. I don't know what exactly it is that draws me to your videos but they give me that boost of motivation and energy. Thank you for making amazing content!
Wow, I've been using pumice and charcoal and feeling a bit left out. Didn't know there were such nuanced differences between perlite and vermiculite properties!
“Hey, guys,” made me think of Harli G 😂 (I don’t mean anything by that, for the record!!!) Thank you for this, Summer!!! I really needed this info!!! You have taught me so much of the science behind all things regarding to plants, and I love science!!! Especially scientific names for plants and where they are found in nature. I can’t wait to finish moving our family of 7 into our new home so that I can take the master class!!! Eeeek!!!!
Lot's of good info! I was using perlite but switched to bonsai jack soil as its much more aesthetically pleasing. Mix it with potting soil for great drainage.
In the US when you buy Pumice in bulk it can be similarly priced to Perlite. I'd recommend contacting your local bulk landscape providers and inquire about it.
Thanks for making a great video, it was very informative. Great presentation with a good pace to it, well spoken, and words pronounced correctly. Such a rare find these days.
Hi Summer Rayne, you should visit Arids and Aroids in Silang, Cavite, Philippines co-owned by Mr. Boyet Ganigan, a famous plant collector in the Philippines and well known in botany all over the world, who's been in a business for almost 40 years, he created the most famous sanseveria which is a hybrid variegated worth 500, 000 dollars, and also he got the most rarest aroids in the world, it is so phenomenal. He also owned a very huge conservatory botanical garden which has a virgin forest inside and a lake, housing the most rarest and only one species of plant in the world. It will be an amazing tour, the best tour you could ever dreamed of your entire life. When you're there words aren't enough to describe such an experience. Never missed it.
I love your videos! I discovered your videos about a week ago, and I think I have a problem because I can't stop watching them. I'm now looking at my walls thinking, "Oh my, vertical garden?!" I also just bought some different fertilizers for the various plants I have, finally feeling comfortable with braving that world to give some life back to my indoor plants. My husband has been so supportive of my plant obsession. But, he's now looking a little concerned (in a playful way) as he's overhearing your videos on non-stop play mode and seeing the wheels turning in my head. ha!
Hey Summer, great video, and very informative content, cannot emphasise that enough! It was your channel and your way to present plants that got me passionate about houseplants, so thanks for that! From the beginning of the pandemic I added about 60 plants to my home, next to the three plants that have somehow survived my neglect over the years! I just wanted to say that your channel is very special and somewhat unique due to the amount of scientific knowledge you incorporate in your videos; it's the thing I appreciate the most about your channel, followed by the quality of video production. There are plenty of houseplant channels out there that just spew out anecdotal evidence ("this worked for me, but no idea why") and while that's easy to replicate, it doesn't help us, beginners, generalise that advice to plants that require different care/conditions. The way you approach things, be it describing the natural habitat or structure of plants or the physical and chemical structure of soil amendments, makes it really easy to understand the general principles and then adapt that to particular scenarios. I hope that wherever the channel is heading, you will not leave out the technical details, and thank you for being such a wonderful educator in houseplant matters!
Excellent video Summer. Many people are using Perlite to propagate tropical plants and it may be that Vermiculite is a better choice due to its moisture retention. I've shared your post with a few tropical plant groups. Thanks so much for sharing your research on this.
That was the best information I've ever gotten on these products... thank you so much... please continue giving the nitty gritty details on everything ♡♡♡♡

I love them both! The only readily available big bag of perlite I can find in my area is at Home Depot. I use that and buy discounted, broken bags of various soils/composts and mix my own potting soil. My plants seem to like it!
Super informative! Thanks for sharing Summer :) I just repotted my Krimson Queen hoya since getting her from a nursery since her potting medium was wayyy too dense for her roots. I put PLENTY of perlite so her roots could breathe.
Initially, I thought you said Perlite was 'delicious'!☺. Seriously though, you have answered questions that I'd nurtured unanswered for years on the difference between these two products...Thank you!
Your videos are so informative I started with your videos when I first started watching You Tube now I follow alot of houseplant people Keep making more videos Thank you
I use 50% vermiculite for all my carnivorous plant and they love it. Stays wet, stay neutral, no organic nitrogen. Great for tiny roots too. Great for swampy plants.
Thank you for this video. I have been growing in containers for a few years now with vermiculite in my mix and had kept seeing and hearing about different gardeners using perlite in their soil mixes. I wondered if I was missing something and could never find a clear explanation as to when and why to use it. You cleared that up nicely for me. Thank you so much.
Thank you for this very informative video. No, it is not too much information! I have seen soil being mixed up in many videos, but knowing what each ingredient brings to the mix is so helpful.
@@summerrayneoakes im going to try this instead of peat moss as a seedling medium. I find that peat moss dries up wwaayyýyy too fast under grow lights. Question- i have obtained rockrool but in the form that is used for musicians and sound reduction. It's not in standard cubed form. Could this be used for plant prop as well?
Ty Summer. I knew about the differences & how I use them BUT I didn't know why!!! Also I didn't realize the nutrients in both!! I always learn so much from you! Im a pumice fan in my mixes. I use perlite in hanging pots to make them lighter! That's a negative of pumice...heavy! Michele 💜
I have used these products for years and years and didn't know all this...thank-you Summer for this content. I read a comment here about inhaling the dust and wanted to add my two cents on this. Even inhaling dry potting mix can be problematic. I use Pro-Mix which has peat, perlite, beneficial fungi and other quality amendments. However I don't recommend breathing it or other soilless mixes. I immediately had an asthma attack and developed bronchitis overnight. I read that at its extreme, breathing these products has been linked with some serious consequences. That would probably be a risk for someone in the industry of producing them, but caution is never a bad thing. Masks are a great idea when working with dry products. Good luck with the Basics Class. All our new comrades from the COVID shut-in will welcome your wisdom I am certain. Happy Growing!
As an experienced plant lover and filmmaker I love your videos. One question. Your ratio suggestion for perlite and vermiculite, is it in volume or in weight? Greetings from Germany
Love your enthusiasm for these details. I'd kind of picked up that they were different in their application but didn't totally understand why until now. Team deep dives! 💜
Is pumice more or less environmentally friendly than these two? Also, I would love to see a video on how to grow cuttings in vermiculite, sounds like a more sustainable alternative to sphagnum moss! 💙
love this video i had always heard about vermiculite but never knew what benefits it could give me that perlite couldn't, definitely gonna pick some up before repotting my peace lily
great vid thanks! my fave ammendment for an "inorganic" aeration is actually pumice... which is kinda in between both perlite and vermiculite in its attributes
Thanks for reminding me to pick up some vermiculite. I recently potted up some plants that really should have an airy moisture retentive soil mix but I only had perlite on hand, so I used that. I’ve been having trouble finding coarse perlite and pumice lately. For cactus and succulents I really like the soil mix better when the perlite and pumice are coarse grade.
I wonder if the shortage of materials we're seeing is just from the massive uptake of people gardening-both indoors and out. I've been speaking with some suppliers on how they have just been literally wiped out!
@@summerrayneoakes - Yes, this is definitely the case with plants and gardening supplies. Some of my local nurseries are so busy that I try to go shopping at the unpopular times! The industry has faired comparatively well during this crisis because the government placed it in the essential services category, which meant they can continue to operate, with safety precautions, even during the strictest lockdown. ~ My ‘first world’ problem is that I’m not happy without substrate grade options! 😉
Thanks for the clarification. These odd, styofoamy nodules I see in potted, discarded plants on the street that I adopt to rejuvenate, and always wondered about their soil mix.

During my ceramic classes the fear of silica dust was drilled into us, so thanks for telling me perlite is mainly silica. I was not aware.
My pleasure. That stuff can really irritate ones nasal passages

That would probably be a risk for someone in the industry of producing them, but caution is never a bad thing. Masks are a great idea when working with dry products. Good luck with the Basics Class. All our new comrades from the COVID shut-in will welcome your wisdom I am certain. Happy Growing!
All of your videos are amazing. But the last two about the cacti repotting and this one I got a ton of information in them thank you for this..!! ❤️
Oh good. I'm glad they are informative and you're learning something new. Thanks for writing in
@@summerrayneoakes 😍
Very good video on the differences between these 2. Thanks!
very nice video... i love it... please also do akadama, kanuma and kokudo on philodendron please
I also would like to know more about charcoal. If it actually works as conditioner and bacterial controller for houseplant soil.
Thanks for the 💡
Absolutely awesome exclamation
Thanks Summer, I often wondered what the difference was, you explained it so well, love your videos.
Is pumice more or less environmentally friendly than these two? Also, I would love to see a video on how to grow cuttings in vermiculite, sounds like a more sustainable alternative to sphagnum moss! 💙
I have been wondering this for years now! Thank you!
love this video i had always heard about vermiculite but never knew what benefits it could give me that perlite couldn't, definitely gonna pick some up before repotting my peace lily
Very informative as usual :)
Could you do a video on all the different kinds of mix ins? Pine bark , cocoa chips, pumice, rice husks etc
I had that same quandary about those two mediums, well covered !
Thank you for sharing you knowledge! 💞💞
Now I can confidently justify having both perlite and vermiculite to my family. 💚🌱
Totally. I always try to have both on hand.
great vid thanks! my fave ammendment for an "inorganic" aeration is actually pumice... which is kinda in between both perlite and vermiculite in its attributes
Thank you, I did not know much about perlite or vermiculite.
Glad it can give you more information! More to come...
As always, great video. Thanks girl. ❤️
Well I’m a blacksmith and I use vermiculite for my heattreating cycles, so we all come together don’t we🙏❤️
Thanks for the clarification. These odd, styofoamy nodules I see in potted, discarded plants on the street that I adopt to rejuvenate, and always wondered about their soil mix.
You're welcome.
Nice video and you are very easy on the eyes as well.
Thank you for educating us! I love Thursdays because of your uploads
