Super. Have the track rise or fall 1/4 inch for every 12 inches of travel, which is about a 2% grade. (1/4" drill bit with a 12" ruler under one end.) That way all of your locomotives will be able to climb the grade. I'd add another passing siding behind the second main, and bring your siding and yard track switch to one end of the passing track, then add switches for a small yard, which will allow you to run a train on the outside loop, and either a running train or yard switching on the inner loop, then add one single ended siding the opposite direction of your yard siding, and you will have the basics of a fun layout, with the only thing missing being a Wye track or turntable. Glad that you noticed the missing crossover. Good luck. Hello from the Tracy Mountain Railway in Colorado. 💙 T.E.N.

NICE LAYOUT!!!! This exactly what I envision for my 8X4 layout, Im a novice to say the least go figure at the age of 50 I want to get back into trains, could you kindly tell me how many straight, curved and turnout tracks I would need to achieve the same. I would greatly appreciate it. Best regards

At mark 4:48 how do you get the left hand turnouts to work that way? My train stops when the turnout switches are engaged.

@@stephencraig8578 they were unpowered so I had to manually switch them, they were actually to small a radius and I had to change to #6 turnouts. This was my first layout. I've changed it several times since then, I'm actually in the middle of a completely new layout, again 🤣
