    Whenever you travel to somewhere new there is never any shortage of recommendations and people telling you that you MUST visit this place and that. These recommendations are often poor and simply repeated ad nauseum without any real justification. There's a classic example of this in Hat Yai - a dim sum restaurant that is always being recommended, but I've eaten there a few times and don't rate it that highly. In the video I'll show you a dim sum restaurant that is equally as good, if not better, but which doesn't usually get recommended.
    However, there is one place I do rate highly if you want to get a good Western style breakfast! Details in the video.

    How I Book Hotels In Thailand And Elsewhere
    Having lived in Thailand since 2003, I have booked many hotels while travelling around the country. Occasionally, I have spent an enormous amount of time trying to find the best deal. However, I almost invariably end up booking through Agoda. Not only are Agoda rates almost always the lowest, but it is a company I have learnt to trust over the years. In 2023 there were stories about another large online hotel Booking company (whose name I won't mention) who failed to pay accommodation hosts and whose customers turned up at hotels to find that they did not have a reservation. I have never had any such problems with Agoda, and the few minor issues I've had have been dealt with efficiently by their customer service representatives.
    Agoda is a company I trust and recommend. Use the following link to book your next hotel room!
    www.agoda.com/partners/partne...
    Disclaimer. I am an Agoda affiliate and will receive a small commission for any completed bookings that are made through my links. However, I only promote goods and services that I am happy with and use myself.
    Are You Interested In Learning How To Read Basic Thai?
    Being able to read enough basic Thai so that you can negotiate menus and read signs is incredibly useful, and it's not that difficult. It's not like Japanese or Chinese, where you have to remember thousands of characters. Like English, it's just consonants and vowels. Yes, there are more characters than English, but phonetically Thai is a lot more consistent. English vowels and vowel combinations change sound in different words (cough, rough, through, thought, bough, etc). In many ways, Thais is actually easier to learn than English. If you are interested, try the tutorials on my other TH-cam channel. With some effort and dedication, you will be able to read quite well after around six months.

    Just been to Ong Tong! Very impressed, I tried some Onion Rings (they made them fresh and very well) and my Wife (Thai) tried Eggs Benedict for the first time, which she absolutely loved as someone who enjoys egg dishes! Thanks so much for the review Phil, we’ll be going back there 🙏🏻☺️☺️

      Glad you enjoyed it, Chris. We haven't been for a while. The old place near the Bangkok Hospital was quite small. The new place near PSU is bigger.
      The girl who runs it is a friend of my wife - they studied art together. I believe she worked on Samui in a tourist hotel and learnt to cook Western style for the farang guests. Prices there are quite reasonable as well.

    Another enjoyable n informative video, used to have buffet breakfast at Grand Sakura Hotel, heard the hotel taken over by a Thai Muslim...other than lunch buffet at Lee Plaza's penthouse, any good hotel breakfast buffet u can recommend?..tqvm..

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! That's right, the Sakura Grand View is now the Yannaty with Muslim owners. It was one of the most popular tourist hotels in Hat Yai with a big massage shop on the first floor. You know, I haven't been to a lunch or breakfast buffet at a hotel in Hat Yai for years and - to be honest - I was never impressed with the one in Lee Gardens Plaza. The view was good, but I wasn't impressed with the food. I had the buffet breakfast at the JB hotel (now the Hansa JB hotel) many years ago, but I don't know if they still do it. The best quality buffet was always at the Centara, but with Covid I'm not sure that there are enough guests currently to warrant doing a buffet. There are a few breakfast places that we often go to on a Sunday morning, including the one in the video, but they aren't buffets.

      It's close to Jiranakorn sports stadium. I can't think of the one that your friend recommended. Havent been to both, only tried 2 dimsum places in Hatyai. One was Chok Dee n d other was near d BP Grande, which is no longer there. Being Malaysian Chinese, would say d main pull is d freshness, but the thai style did not agree with me. Not a big fan of coriander. The best places i have eaten at coincidentally have been places i have accidently stumbled on. To have an idea on whats available is good but u have to keep in mind that every persons palate is different. For instance i have friends that swear by boat noodles in Bangkok, but i prefer the stall near Mayflower. To each his or her own.

      The Malaysian tourists rave about Chok Dee and pre-Covid it was always packed at weekends, but I've never been that impressed. Yes, I agree that we are all different and we all have different tastes.
      The area around Victory Monument in Bangkok is famous for boat noodles. There are several places in Hat Yai that serve this dish and they all vary. My wife likes boat noodles and will only eat them from certain shops!

      @@expatlivinginthailand hahaah like i have mentioned, to each his/her own as food is not only subject to our individual tastebuds, but to also our food memory such as d taste that we were brought up on, the memories made when certain foods were enjoyed with and many more. To quote an example Bak Kut Teh is my all time go to meal, there are many interpretation of d same dish in Malaysia but i keep going back to a particular restaurant as it served it just the way i like it and was a popular after work spot for a few years. While i admit there are better choices, but this restaurant is still numero uno in my list to go to. Maybe its the sentiment. You never know why, it just is. Thats being human, and another human trait is following the pack, as food reviews in hatyai are rare to come by on the internet, whoever posts the first review will attract another and another will follow. Thus resulting in a digital zombie effect, there definitely would be better places other than Chok Dee and in fact i have been advised there are by older less internet savvy aunties and uncles. But it is what it is, as there presence is close to nil online wise. So thats the reason why Chok Dee is at the heart of the feeding frenzy and location wise, it is located in d vicinity of Lee Garden area also helps.

    • @expatlivinginthailand
      @expatlivinginthailand  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@davidteoh7080 There are lots of Bak Kut Teh shops in Hat Yai due to the number of tourists that enjoy that dish. You're right about memories and how we were brought up. My parents grew up during WW2 when there were food shortages and a lot of offal was eaten. When I was a kid my Mum braised lambs' hearts and we ate liver and kidney. It was perfectly normal, but Americans won't eat offal. When I was working in London an American colleague came over for a short assignment. We went to the cafeteria one day and he saw steak and kidney pie. He asked me if it meant kidney beans. When I explained that it was real kidney he looked appalled! My wife eats food that I find absolutely disgusting, but it's perfectly normal to her. I will now have to be very careful in my videos when I mention anything to do with food!

      Even at the height of the insurgency I never felt in any danger. Certainly no problems at the moment. Regarding crime, maybe if you go into the wrong areas after dark, but there isn't really a problem. I wouldn't worry!

      @@immortalgal041088 If you're female, just be sensible. There have been a number of stories over the years of Western females getting into trouble, but they did stupid things. Be extra careful after dark. Dress sensibly, don't get drunk and go to secluded places, but that is just common sense.
      I have never seen any political unrest in Hat Yai. Even at times when there have been political riots and street battles in Bangkok I have never seen anything like this in Hat Yai.
      Many years ago there was a handbag snatching problem in Hat Yai - my girlfriend before I got married was a victim. Kids would drive around on motorbikes grabbing bags from women. However, I haven't heard anything about this for a very long time. Just listen to your gut instincts and I'm sure you will be fine! I've heard worse stories about crime in Malaysia than I have about crime in Thailand.

      There's a lot of Chinese influence in Thailand and a lot of Chinese food. Many of the dishes use the original Chinese names transliterated into Thai.
