They have protection it’s called a mouth guard
And maybe a jock strap
😂😂I bet you're an Aussie like me😂
@@chriscody2778 yes I am
@@shezza66 Great Aussie sense of humour 🤣🤣, No-one else has it😂
Most of these hits are still allowed, it’s tightening up 2024. You just need to watch the grand final this year. You can hit between the shoulders and knees. They have protection, mouth guards
That last player was Stephen Silvani. He played over 300 games over 16 years in the AFL he was tough
Although almost all of these hits are illegal and would result in massive suspensions today, a lot of these aren't that long ago. Some are in the 2000-10 time period and the umpires called play on.
You can NEVER throw the ball forward OR backward. You must ALWAYS punch the ball out of your hand with your fist. This is called a handball. If you throw it you will have a free kick awarded against you. If you run with the ball you must bounce it every 15 metres.
They wear safety socks.
you can't throw the ball backwards or forwards at anytime ever (that's rugby). You can only kick it or handball. Aussie rules is the best game in the world 💪
Remember, these are highlights, this doesn't happen every game, and very rarely in this day and age. I played footy (AFL) since I was a young little tacker until I was about 30 (20 years ago), had some big hits on me and put some on too, plus a few speccys in the mix. Got concussion once, broke my tibia (lower leg), and another collision broke my collar bone and dislocated my AC joint. But I loved playing the sport. Even in high school, playing for just a local grade club, we'd have 3 x 2.5 hour training sessions a week. Run maybe 5-10 odd kms (jog/sprints), ball, tackle etc practice drills and generally more than 250 push-ups during each session, not all at once though. Kept me fit AF, and a biased opinion it is one of the best sports on the planet.
We do have protection and they are called condoms
Some of these guys you see getting hit went on to play 200 or 300 games. However in recent years it has come to light that some of them have significant brain injuries as a result of all of the concussions suffered.
We all growup playing this in school the kids learn to play in the auskick
I remember these games, and when they started changing the rules, even the kids in the school yard were like "they turning the sport into a fairies game." Ahhhh, maybe they did the right theling
I was still taught back in 2007 tackle to hurt
You guys should have a look at rugby league as well. Aussie tough sports
Men , women and kids play Aussie Rules. Its the game for everyone. EDIT- hope you had a good Christmas . Its Boxing day here and that means Test cricket .
The good old days
you cant throw at all
Maybe McKenzie would like to see Mason Cox the Texan who plays for Collingwood.
Things to realize
1. They train for this, most since they were little kids
2. Highlight reels don't show it, but a lot of these guys get back up and continue to play.
3. Graphic as all of this may seem, the low number of exchange players on the bench should tell you how few ACTUAL injuries there are. This is not soccer. If they can get up they will, and they do.
You should look into the North Texas Devils, it's your local AFL club in Texas
I cracked up every time you said “He’s dead. He’s dead”.
AFL- the best game in the world 🌎 😊. You need to let Makensey react to "What is AFL" the rules explained
and should be the new version which says the female league

AFL Here Comes the Boom you need to watch it
There’s one major hit they never show in these videos. A Brisbane player got hit so hard, his skull got fractured so bad the side of his face caved in. He walked off the field. I can’t remember when it was as quite a fees have passed since then, but these guys are tough with a capital T.
Back in my day, as a defender, we were told " if the ball has ears, punch it even harder "
😂😂
Also u can't throw the ball at all if u throw it u give the other team a free kick
Exactly, that why videos like these on youtube virtually teach nothing about the game to people overseas.
Me as a Hawthorn fan (brown and yellow stripes) acts casual , some the others teams as bad though mainly Essendon , North and St Kilda
Oi you leave the Bombers out of this lol
Well leathal Lee Matthews, dipper, dermie were not exactly clean.
I've watched AFL my whole life but this is hard to watch.
There are actually 4 clubs in Texas, Houston Lonestars in Houston, North Texas Devils and Dallas Dingoes in Dallas and Austin Crows in Austin. It might be worth checking out your local teams and go watch a game live. USAFL has just celebrated their 25 years as a league. Cheers
That's just footy. I grew up watching them play like this and some!
U need to watch the fights from back then.
Was standard for the time apart from the occasional head clash knees and shoulders were the usually the biggest injuries. It taught you to have situational aweness because you could be hit from any direction at speed. Normally you rely on teamates to let you know if someone is coming for you. Best type of football. You have to bounce the ball every 15 yards. It was designed to keep cricketers fit in the off season. The longer back in history of the game you go the togher and rougher the game was.
It's impossible to wear a helmet, the game is so fast and you need your eye on the ball, your teammates and your opponents! 😱
90% of the hits where legal, that's why they keep chasing the ball while everyone is on the deck
"Where's the free kick????" Free kick??? Where's the fucking handcuffs?
This is what we do for fun, imagine what we're like when we're pissed off😅 - don't screw with the Aussies. 🇦🇺
It was always just part of the game, that is where we got the suicide pass where you standing still to catch the ball and someone would crush you.
and we play this as kids. Are dads get so proud that they even become a goal umpire
Half of Australia loves AFL. The other half hates it with a passion. It's aerial ping pong without rules. You get awarded a point for failure.
The worst hits was the public having to watch Warwick cappa in shorts five times too small
😅😅
America has women and men’s AFL comp now. Both of you could plag
I believe No one has been paraysled playing AFL since 1975, and I think Neil Sachse is the only one, but I'm not 100% sure. Most common injury is actually hamstring strains and then groin strains. Not saying that there havent been some serious injuries, but not as much as you may think
Back in the day, if it didn't interfere with the play, then play on. It's still a little bit like that nowadays, just no hits above the shoulders or you get suspended.
I remember the sports days bro , good times good times on this consistently good channel
My son 13, has played 2 seasons and will play again next year. My daughter 10 played her first season this year and is looking forward to next year. Cheers
You should react to nrl biggest hits
When they got knocked out someone would run out on the field with smelling salt that would wake them up and start playing again
Head contact was always disallowed, but was only penalised with a free kick during the era of these videos but would result in multiple weeks suspension now. You cannot throw the ball in any direction (throwing backwards is a rugby thing), only handball or kick it in any direction. The comment about Aussie rules combining multiple other sports is a common one but, in fact, it was invented in 1858, with the laws codified in 1859, so it is older than most other codes. Interesting fact: Peter Schwab, who was the instigator in one of these hits, later became in charge of the umpires (referees).
it"s a game of 360 degrees unlike Rugby & NFL. There is still some big hits
Some people will say the game was better when you could knock someone out with a high placed shoulder. Personally I'd rather see a talented player play footy rather than get hospitalised by a thug. A look at the talent involved in our sport is a must to cleanse the palate after a focus on the hits. I'd recommend a look at "what is AFL", "every goal of the year 2000-2019", "every mark of the year 2000-2019" and some highlights of Eddie Betts (one of the most entertaining players to see highlights for)
Players have played up to 20 years at this level of competition….
Helmets and pads cause more injuries and greater concussions. Most players feel invulnerable and don't pull out of hits or try to protect themselves.
Carn the blues 😂😂😂😂
Sooooo many hilarious comments here, I mean balls with ears, Cappa's 5 times too small shorts, mouthguard=protection, safety socks😅👌
Brain damage from concussions is an emerging major problem for the AFL. These are long term consequences where players who are retired are developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). As nothing more than a casual observer I feel the problem grew worse when the sport became truly professional about 30 years ago. There was a lot of incentive to to keep playing and in a fearless manner that ensued an ongoing place in the team. So where an amateur player might say after a couple of bad concussions "I have had enough", the professional wants that high maintenance model on his arm, the new luxury car and the penthouse apartment so pushes on and on. Have a feeling there will be one day be a concussion rule that after X number of head knocks it is literally game over. There are current law suits that will force action.
Mate, i played afl all through school, and them club until i discovered beer amd girls. At 15 i was playing with 20 yos. You were NEVER allowed to go for the head, its called shoulder charge. These hits were part of the game and yes there were minor injuries bit rarely any bad injuries. You were allowed to hit with the shoulder. I started playing again in my early thirties for a few years. You peek at early thirties. Also you cant pass the ball without punching it, there is no throwing.
The rules have changed a lot since those old days.
The coach told us put them off the feild...l never went for the head .but always 1 in 36 players on the football ground/ feild that does go for the head...you got have vision 360 degrees in this game..most played the rest of the game after a concution and bit of a rest ..not allowed back on the feild these days after a concution.
The oldest professional football clubs of any code of football that are still around today belong to AFL.
An AFL player would absolutely body an NFL Player
NFL is soft compared to Australian Rules also NFL is so very slow too and also only in front tackling whereas we are 360 degree game; helmets are worse at speed; NO THROWING AT ALL YOU GET PENALIZED FOR THROWING ; HAVE TO PUNCH BALL WITH FIST ; ALSO GAME IS MUCH OLDER THAN VOLLEYBALL BASKETBALL AND US FOOTBALL, 1858 Started
You have to be a special kind of mental to play Aussie Rules
The introduction of instant replay by the TV networks cleaned up the game. You, the league officials and the umpires could see in slow motion what was really going on, and it lead to the suspension and/or banning of a number of outright thugs. It also made players aware that you just couldn't get away with it any more.
When I was a kid I was scared of getting into the tackles. I told my dad and he simply told me, "You just gotta put your body on the line."
Tbh, it worked😂
I also still have a broken nose from when I played
Most do have long careers, a lot of these would have ended up in suspensions and don't forget this game has been played since 1858.
Kids play it but they have different rules.
watch currant affair was a Afl player from the 80s has brain damage today
You can’t throw the football at all, you have to hand pass which is hiring it with a closed fist.
You would be surprised at the lack of serious injury in these games.I played a number of years in Melbourne & only suffered bruising which were usually gone by the next game.Speed & ultra fitness were your friend. You wouldn't shoot anyone here....... no guns !
I always find it funny when anyone says that pads should be involved, pads are a huge reason as to why american football still has as many concussions as it does. Pads add a false sense of security, false sense of invulnerability, false sense of protection, and when you look at how american football is played, particularly from a tackling sense, even though that has modified over time, they still throw their heads in first most of the time because they think the helmet will protect them. I guarentee if you removed the pads from american football, therefore changing the way that players have to tackle, consussions and neck issues would dramatically drop. Not disappear, but drop.
Adding pads to AFL would just remove some of the mobility out of the game, and would add those false senses into the game, it would make overall play worse. Keeping in mind as well that AFL, for having no pads, and vastly changing from the tackling aspect you see here, doesn't actually have that much of a concussion issue anymore and actually has a much smaller concussion problem than american football, most of the injuries that happen are the same as any other physical sport, shoulders, knees, ankles, ribs, that kind of stuff, but consussions have dropped off massively because of modifying the tackling to be safer. You won't be able to properly modify pad tackling however, because there will always be that thought in the back of your mind that the pads will protect you.
Pads just aren't as good, or as much of a benefit for physical sport as you might think they are.
Very tame compared to the maniacs in the NRL this is normal
Lol I love those games! Is that the Game that Hird had to get a plate in his face and get it reconstructed? Lol love it
Because we are not soft, the greatest game on earth
Neal Mackenzie, another Aussie sports video showing big hits. Rugby Biggest Hits "Till i Collapse" This video is of Rugby League, not Rugby Union have a look and Merry Christmas 😀.
Darion✅
No one died and most players play for at least 10 to 20 years and they have mouth guards so they don't lose their teeth and a lot of that was long ago the sport is a lot cleaner now
Most of these hits would get you banned from playing nowadays. It really got to a point where the actual game was secondary to the violence you could inflict in people. Thankfully it has improved. Still a very physical game, but it's a game, not a back alley fight. A few times there were boxing matches between so-called hard men from these teams, they had very limited skills, they just relied on king hitting the other person. Sturdy and tough blokes, for sure, but in those days it was like a license to bash people wearing a different colored vest than what you were wearing.
These hits were done back in the 80s by the looks of it.. being that physical ain't allowed these days..
The thing about this is AFL has woman playing in their own league. Yet do women play NFL
I think there are too many people who think that everything is an argument.
I like American Football, Australian Football, Rugby League and Soccer. What is the argument?
Yeah nah they’re fine
In this game ball pass through not the player
This is nothing mate, you need to see doggies of war till I collapse. You will never see harder hits. I promise. Rugby is insane.😊
U can't throw the ball in any direction U have to hand pass the ball
They are a collection so you are seeing the worst. You need to watch the rules of AFL first. A lot of these would have been suspended later.
You could play two hundred matches for two hours play each and never be hit in head like many of these bumps you seen in the videos. This is just some video of some of worst hits over a number of decades and nearly all these hits were illegal whether in the 1970's, 80's, 90's or now. Most of the time a player will never experience a hit like many of these. There are now more umpires on field and more cameras in use to catch out more offenders so it happens less often. A few of these hits were totally legal but the ones above shoulder have always been illegal which most in this video were illegal. I think the very first one actually had the guy in a wheel chair the rest of his life which was before the time I started watching football. Not seen anyone die or be in a wheel chair in any matches I seen so need to keep this in perspective that these are very much outliers of what happens in most football matches. You will experience hard bumps and a few bruises but not much more than that for most football matches. The bigger wear and tear is on knee joints and ankles by running so much and changing direction so often at high speed. Most people that play for ten or more years will experience the effects of that way more than the rare big hits and collisions of these videos.
No you cant throw the ball backward you cant throw it at all
Straya!!!
It's just a game. Shake hands and move on after the game.
Yeahh you won't play AFL because even at the start of says it's a game for MEN.
Play on
Lol..knew u had a white gf
You seem like a nice couple but watching other people's content and re-branding it as your own will only go so far. Go make some original content as well. What ur doing now isn't much better than theft.
AGREE
Americans are so soft 😂😂😂
aussie aussie aussie , oi oi oi , bring back the biff . lol
I hated AFL for a reason. I saw it as no different to Union. Just a ridiculous sport where the biggest 'fridge' wins. The skill needed to elbow some one at speed while they can't see you coming is ZERO! These sports are NOT entertainment. They are as bad a lions in the circus and should also be illegal.
Ahhh the good old days when men were men
NRL all the way! Screw aerial ping pong.
So go watch the Rugby League then. Why are you here?
You are no better than the soccer guy that does this. SMH
Why does every American react to AFL? But you never see NRL Reactions. On my side of Aus, you either like AFL or NRL. It is a rivalry. And GayFL gets unfair attention. NRL is soo much better, but all the reactions are to AFL. Well I say that is total Bs! Do an NRL Reaction please so us NRL fans can enjoy this type of content to. NRL is a mean sport, it is rough and you have to be tough. AFL is a fitness sport whee you need to be fit. Please react to the obviously superior NRL. This sport is garbage and I am not going to watch this reaction. Do an NRL video and I will watch it. Please do it!
Awww poor little triggered princess. Calls it gayfl & then carries on like a Sheila! Well done 👏👏👏
😂🤣😂🤣👍@@sandgroperwookiee65
@@sandgroperwookiee65 hahaha couldn't have said it better myself! What a whinging princess!!! How childish can they be? "GayFL" - are they 5? 😂
More reactions to afl cause nrl is about as interesting as a soccer game.
@@matthewcharles5867 ok, so tackles are less interesting than running up and down the field over and over. Delusional much 😂😂
Even preteen girls play this game.
