Although almost all of these hits are illegal and would result in massive suspensions today, a lot of these aren't that long ago. Some are in the 2000-10 time period and the umpires called play on.

You can NEVER throw the ball forward OR backward. You must ALWAYS punch the ball out of your hand with your fist. This is called a handball. If you throw it you will have a free kick awarded against you. If you run with the ball you must bounce it every 15 metres.

Remember, these are highlights, this doesn't happen every game, and very rarely in this day and age. I played footy (AFL) since I was a young little tacker until I was about 30 (20 years ago), had some big hits on me and put some on too, plus a few speccys in the mix. Got concussion once, broke my tibia (lower leg), and another collision broke my collar bone and dislocated my AC joint. But I loved playing the sport. Even in high school, playing for just a local grade club, we'd have 3 x 2.5 hour training sessions a week. Run maybe 5-10 odd kms (jog/sprints), ball, tackle etc practice drills and generally more than 250 push-ups during each session, not all at once though. Kept me fit AF, and a biased opinion it is one of the best sports on the planet.

    1. They train for this, most since they were little kids
    2. Highlight reels don't show it, but a lot of these guys get back up and continue to play.
    3. Graphic as all of this may seem, the low number of exchange players on the bench should tell you how few ACTUAL injuries there are. This is not soccer. If they can get up they will, and they do.

Was standard for the time apart from the occasional head clash knees and shoulders were the usually the biggest injuries. It taught you to have situational aweness because you could be hit from any direction at speed. Normally you rely on teamates to let you know if someone is coming for you. Best type of football. You have to bounce the ball every 15 yards. It was designed to keep cricketers fit in the off season. The longer back in history of the game you go the togher and rougher the game was.

Head contact was always disallowed, but was only penalised with a free kick during the era of these videos but would result in multiple weeks suspension now. You cannot throw the ball in any direction (throwing backwards is a rugby thing), only handball or kick it in any direction. The comment about Aussie rules combining multiple other sports is a common one but, in fact, it was invented in 1858, with the laws codified in 1859, so it is older than most other codes. Interesting fact: Peter Schwab, who was the instigator in one of these hits, later became in charge of the umpires (referees).

Some people will say the game was better when you could knock someone out with a high placed shoulder. Personally I'd rather see a talented player play footy rather than get hospitalised by a thug. A look at the talent involved in our sport is a must to cleanse the palate after a focus on the hits. I'd recommend a look at "what is AFL", "every goal of the year 2000-2019", "every mark of the year 2000-2019" and some highlights of Eddie Betts (one of the most entertaining players to see highlights for)

Brain damage from concussions is an emerging major problem for the AFL. These are long term consequences where players who are retired are developing chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). As nothing more than a casual observer I feel the problem grew worse when the sport became truly professional about 30 years ago. There was a lot of incentive to to keep playing and in a fearless manner that ensued an ongoing place in the team. So where an amateur player might say after a couple of bad concussions "I have had enough", the professional wants that high maintenance model on his arm, the new luxury car and the penthouse apartment so pushes on and on. Have a feeling there will be one day be a concussion rule that after X number of head knocks it is literally game over. There are current law suits that will force action.

Mate, i played afl all through school, and them club until i discovered beer amd girls. At 15 i was playing with 20 yos. You were NEVER allowed to go for the head, its called shoulder charge. These hits were part of the game and yes there were minor injuries bit rarely any bad injuries. You were allowed to hit with the shoulder. I started playing again in my early thirties for a few years. You peek at early thirties. Also you cant pass the ball without punching it, there is no throwing.

The introduction of instant replay by the TV networks cleaned up the game. You, the league officials and the umpires could see in slow motion what was really going on, and it lead to the suspension and/or banning of a number of outright thugs. It also made players aware that you just couldn't get away with it any more.

  • @dmoorf
    @dmoorf 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

I always find it funny when anyone says that pads should be involved, pads are a huge reason as to why american football still has as many concussions as it does. Pads add a false sense of security, false sense of invulnerability, false sense of protection, and when you look at how american football is played, particularly from a tackling sense, even though that has modified over time, they still throw their heads in first most of the time because they think the helmet will protect them. I guarentee if you removed the pads from american football, therefore changing the way that players have to tackle, consussions and neck issues would dramatically drop. Not disappear, but drop.
Adding pads to AFL would just remove some of the mobility out of the game, and would add those false senses into the game, it would make overall play worse. Keeping in mind as well that AFL, for having no pads, and vastly changing from the tackling aspect you see here, doesn't actually have that much of a concussion issue anymore and actually has a much smaller concussion problem than american football, most of the injuries that happen are the same as any other physical sport, shoulders, knees, ankles, ribs, that kind of stuff, but consussions have dropped off massively because of modifying the tackling to be safer. You won't be able to properly modify pad tackling however, because there will always be that thought in the back of your mind that the pads will protect you.
Pads just aren't as good, or as much of a benefit for physical sport as you might think they are.

Most of these hits would get you banned from playing nowadays. It really got to a point where the actual game was secondary to the violence you could inflict in people. Thankfully it has improved. Still a very physical game, but it's a game, not a back alley fight. A few times there were boxing matches between so-called hard men from these teams, they had very limited skills, they just relied on king hitting the other person. Sturdy and tough blokes, for sure, but in those days it was like a license to bash people wearing a different colored vest than what you were wearing.

You could play two hundred matches for two hours play each and never be hit in head like many of these bumps you seen in the videos. This is just some video of some of worst hits over a number of decades and nearly all these hits were illegal whether in the 1970's, 80's, 90's or now. Most of the time a player will never experience a hit like many of these. There are now more umpires on field and more cameras in use to catch out more offenders so it happens less often. A few of these hits were totally legal but the ones above shoulder have always been illegal which most in this video were illegal. I think the very first one actually had the guy in a wheel chair the rest of his life which was before the time I started watching football. Not seen anyone die or be in a wheel chair in any matches I seen so need to keep this in perspective that these are very much outliers of what happens in most football matches. You will experience hard bumps and a few bruises but not much more than that for most football matches. The bigger wear and tear is on knee joints and ankles by running so much and changing direction so often at high speed. Most people that play for ten or more years will experience the effects of that way more than the rare big hits and collisions of these videos.

I hated AFL for a reason. I saw it as no different to Union. Just a ridiculous sport where the biggest 'fridge' wins. The skill needed to elbow some one at speed while they can't see you coming is ZERO! These sports are NOT entertainment. They are as bad a lions in the circus and should also be illegal.

Why does every American react to AFL? But you never see NRL Reactions. On my side of Aus, you either like AFL or NRL. It is a rivalry. And GayFL gets unfair attention. NRL is soo much better, but all the reactions are to AFL. Well I say that is total Bs! Do an NRL Reaction please so us NRL fans can enjoy this type of content to. NRL is a mean sport, it is rough and you have to be tough. AFL is a fitness sport whee you need to be fit. Please react to the obviously superior NRL. This sport is garbage and I am not going to watch this reaction. Do an NRL video and I will watch it. Please do it!

@@matthewcharles5867 ok, so tackles are less interesting than running up and down the field over and over. Delusional much 😂😂
