A common mistake for tourists coming to Norway is wasting their time in the eastern part of Norway (Oslo is just a boring version of Stockholm or Copenhagen). Beitostølen is very nice, but hardly compares to the spectacular West and North of Norway. I suggest you start in Stavanger (with the Pulpit Rock and Lysebotn) and go North via Bergen, Voss, Sogndal, Sognefjellet, Geiranger, Aalesund, and take the Atlantic Road to Trondheim via Kristiansund. Now that is a fantastic drive!
I have heard this misconseption several times lately.. 17th of May is the constitution day, and we are celebrating the signing and agreement of the constitution in 1814. That was independance from Denmark, and we call that period for the 400-year long night. As for the independance from Sweden, we have 7th of june, which is called 'unionsoppløsningen' which many of us put out the flag, but don't celebrate as 17th of May. The government building also has a room called the 7. juni-room.
I'm Norwegian and I'm hardly aware that the 7th of june is a day of significance. The parade street from the Norwegian Parliament to the Royal Castle (That was shown on the 17th of may feature) is named after the Swedish king Carl Johan and his big Statue (with him on a horse) is the center of the square courtyard in front of the castle. We love our swedish sweet brother and adore to celebrate with them in their own national costumes 🇧🇻🇸🇪 💞

And the fact that we were forced into a union with Sweden for 91 years doesn't really matter. Especially since the swedes did their best to try to keep us, by giving us a lot of autonomy. not that it actually mattered in the end. we have had a taste of independence and we would not give that up. But. This needs to be said though. The Swedes treated us much better than the Danish ever did.

When I grew up in Bergen in the 60-70's,it was common for Norwegian families to spend summer holidays in Sweden,which had a more modern and innovative society then Norway back then. (And way better highways!) Later in life I realised that while most Norwegians knew quite a lot about Sweden,most Swedes knew precious little about Norway. So welcome next time to beautiful Bergen and the majestic fjords and mountains of Western Norway!
2:43 - 17th of May is our constitution day, so we're technically celebrating the constitution which was passed on the 17th of May 1814 - before our union with you guys. So one could in a way say we're celebrating entering a union with Sweden (despite almost going into a war with you several times during the 100 years to come). Norway is quite accessible for handicapped. Museums, public buildings, restaurants, public transport and so on are all accessible for wheelchairs. It might be an issue during winter months and snowy sidewalks, but in summer there should be no issue getting around. Don't let that stop you from experiencing Norway:)

It's one thing to visit a place or country on your holiday and become infatuated with it. It's an entirely different thing to move there to live. That's when the culture shocks set in. From my experience many English and Irish expats are not at all comfortable living here in Sweden.

I’ve recently moved to Canada from the UK having only been to Canada once before and knowing barely anyone here - I feel pretty good about the decision and the culture shock feels less for some reason. Maybe Canada and the UK are similar enough that I don’t notice much of a difference day to day, honestly I have no idea but I’m curious to hear tone thoughts on this! ☺️☺️☺️

English is one of the mandatory subjects everyone has to take at school in Sweden, I don't know about today, but back in the 90's when I went to school, English classes started in 4th grade. It might even be earlier these days. Far from every Swede is fluent in English, but many are at least proficient. It's definitely a country where you can easily get around with English as a visitor or expat, without having to worry about needing someone to translate for you
But deutch tutoring starts way later, (in middle scool) and in my time, a lot of it was just if you chose it (several choices ,but have to stick to one of them). Ive forgotten a lot of my deutch,unfortunally... So , in norway,everyone know english,allthou how we TALK/sound ,might be "so so "😅... And,my grammar stinks(obviously). I learned english and deutch , and started with spanish and wanted to try french after spanish ,(senior years)but i gave up. Still a regret,tho,i wish i learned more language. But,its not to late...

Not independence day. It's Constitution Day from when the constitution was signed in 1814 . Independence day is 7 June when Norway became independent from Sweden in 1905. Although Sweden didn't recognise our independence until 24 October same year.

Nice video! We love Sweden and we go to vacation there almost every year. Been doing that since the 70's (I'm 53 now). You know the traditional dress worn at 17. may is a very expensive dress. It's hand made and cost from 3000 to 5000 euros to have made for woman (unless you buy a China replica). Many girls get their dress for the confirmation and they keep it for life.
Also, a lot of young people inherred a bunad,from their mother. So , one bunad,can be used for several generations. All bunads are made to be adapted to make size bigger/smaller,too.

The sissolution of the union is makerd on 7 June when Oscar II was deposed. And just to show how unpopular the union had become, this was confirmed by a referendum on 13 August - and 99.96% (!) voted for ending it. Norwegians have never been as unanimous about anything after that.
So, I've heard that when Scandinavians visit each other's countries, although their native languages are mutually intelligible, they prefer to speak English as a lingua franca. I'm curious, is this true, did you guys speak English in Norway?
Norwegians don't need English to communicate with Swedes, and I don't think Swedes need it to communicate with Norwegians, either. Danish is very similar to Norwegian in writing, but because of the pronunciation it is more difficult to understand Danish, but if you give yourself some time we can also communicate with them. Young people may not be as confident in communicating without using English. A Norwegian, a Swede and a Dane can, with a little goodwill, communicate with each other by all three speaking their own language. Norway is all about dialects, and Norwegians have grown up with both Swedish and Danish children's programs on TV, so for us it's just like another dialect, whether it's Swedish or Danish.

True. As much as I love Sweden, Sweden, Denmark and Finland doesn't even come close to Norway in the spectacular nature department. Iceland however is certainly up there with some impressive nature, but in the Nordics It's difficult to beat western Norway and the Lofoten archipelago up north.

Nice video! We love Sweden and we go to vacation there almost every year. Been doing that since the 70's (I'm 53 now). You know the traditional dress worn at 17. may is a very expensive dress. It's hand made and cost from 3000 to 5000 euros to have made for woman (unless you buy a China replica). Many girls get their dress for the confirmation and they keep it for life.

Also, a lot of young people inherred a bunad,from their mother. So , one bunad,can be used for several generations.
All bunads are made to be adapted to make size bigger/smaller,too.

17 May is Constitution Day from when the constitution was signed at Eidsvoll in 1814.
Independence Day is 7 June from when Norway declared It's independence from Sweden in 1905.

And just to show how unpopular the union had become, this was confirmed by a referendum on 13 August - and 99.96% (!) voted for ending it.

So, I've heard that when Scandinavians visit each other's countries, although their native languages are mutually intelligible, they prefer to speak English as a lingua franca. I'm curious, is this true, did you guys speak English in Norway?
Norwegians don't need English to communicate with Swedes, and I don't think Swedes need it to communicate with Norwegians, either. Danish is very similar to Norwegian in writing, but because of the pronunciation it is more difficult to understand Danish, but if you give yourself some time we can also communicate with them. Young people may not be as confident in communicating without using English. A Norwegian, a Swede and a Dane can, with a little goodwill, communicate with each other by all three speaking their own language.
Norway is all about dialects, and Norwegians have grown up with both Swedish and Danish children's programs on TV, so for us it's just like another dialect, whether it's Swedish or Danish.
There's no way I'd speak English with a Swedish person... 😅

True. As much as I love Sweden, Sweden, Denmark and Finland doesn't even come close to Norway in the spectacular nature department. Iceland however is certainly up there with some impressive nature, but in the Nordics It's difficult to beat western Norway and the Lofoten archipelago up north.
About to visit Norway (cruise from Tromsø to the Lofoten archipelago and Svalbard) for the first time in just a couple weeks! Can't wait!

2:28 Nope. Norway dont celebrate the independence from Sweden (which was 1905). Norway celebrate the constitution signed on 17th if May in 1814. You do correct it kinda just after, but ... Sweden has nothing to do with it.
I just got back from 12 days in Alaska. So clean and fresh air. Was there for the summer solstice so 2 hours of dusk that day only. What beauty. Would love to see Norway/ Sweden.

Do you have a saunas in your cottages in Norway or Sweden? As a Finn its hard to even think going to cottage where is NO sauna, especially if its cold outside. :D
Some do, some don't. Nowadays I think outdoor spa's are more common, but if you want to rent one, you should check if they have a sauna.
