OMG imagine my surprise when I saw you were in my city, Pittsburgh! Ok, so let's set the record straight. First, Pittsburgh was an industrial city up until the 1980s with the steel mills. Those days are over. It is now a banking, healthcare, tech and university city. You are correct that the downtown are is pretty dead outside of the daytime when people are there for work. Even that has lessened since the big "C" word occurred as many people work from home now. However, there are very few US cities where the downtown is vibrant and lots of people live there. Even LA is not a great place to live downtown. However, in terms of Pittsburgh, you don't need to leave the city limits to find nice areas. Pittsburgh is indeed a city of neighborhoods. Most of the vibrant and happening ones are in the east part of the city. They are the trendy and more youth driven ones like Shadyside, Lawrenceville, East Liberty, Regent Square, Squirrel Hill, the Strip District, and Oakland (where the universities are and the major hospitals). Considering Pittsburgh size, it has a lot going on. It was highly influenced by European settlers but has had an influx of Asian, Indian, and Middle Eastern residents, particularly in the neighborhoods I mentioned and are highly educated. Google has an expanded office in the Shadyside/East Liberty area where many of the Gen Z/Millennial geeks wander and live. Mt Washington (where you were) and below (Southside) are 2 other areas that have unique and vibrant neighborhoods. The Southside is where lots of bars and other very one-off shops & restaurants are. It's not my favorite place at night as it can get rowdy! I have lived outside of Pittsburgh and traveled the world, and Pittsburgh is not NYC, but there are only a few cities on the planet that are even close, so using that as a measuring stick, is not wise. Come back and I will take you to the places you need to go. Contrary to some beliefs, Pittsburgh is always voted one of the most livable cities in the US and usually in the top 50 in the world. Not bad for a smaller city! If you are looking for easy access to Toronto, NYC, Chicago, DC, Philly, and other cities in the same radius, Pittsburgh is centrally located. For someone who loves to travel like myself, I can drive to Toronto in 4 1/2 hours, and most of the other cities in 4-6 hours. I like it because it is very affordable and a good hub to explore the world! Enjoy Toronto!

I’m so glad you acknowledged the downtown debate when traveling to North America. I feel like European cities due to their age and culture, primarily have a city centre as the place to be for tourists. I’ve recently come to terms with this not being the case for many North American, including Canadian cities now I live in Calgary. Outside of downtown, Calgary is absolutely stunning with so many beautiful neighbourhoods! I’m so glad I wasn’t put off moving here by all of the downtown horror stories and most tourists could get away with not setting foot downtown but still maximising their time in these types of cities.

I like your images of Pittsburgh, but your video shows some of the perils of what I'm going to start calling "Fast Travel" (like "Fast Food"). Two very different places that you missed in Pittsburgh were the Andy Warhol Museum and Clayton, the Frick Mansion. Andy Warhol grew up in Pittsburgh and went to university there (Carnegie Mellon). He bequeathed a lot of his art to his home town. Henry Clay Frick was a Gilded Age billionaire who made his fortune in the Pittsburgh coal and steel industries. Clayton was his family mansion, and houses his furniture and art collection. I haven't been back to Pittsburgh since the pandemic but back then it had lovely parks and very good restaurants downtown.

So genetically I am Korean BUT mentally I am American. When I visited, Korea over 20 years ago, I did not realize how American I was until I started to get the weird looks from other Koreans as I was smiling when I made eye contact and was just openly talking and being friendly to other Koreans. . .LOL It just brought back memories of ALL the odd looks that I got. . .OMG. . .I am crying!!!! What you said about Americans being an open book really resonates. I remember visiting my cousin in Vancouver and we decided to go visit Seattle. I figured it would be basically the same as Vancouver. It definitely was not. The people were so open and friendly and at first it was refreshing and charming, but it only took a long weekend to get old. When I got back I commented to my cousin that it was a great trip but I was so happy to be back with our cold, cold people lol
Great video again! I was always curious about this city, since most of my former team at work was based in Pittsburgh. They were very lovely people! But their stories about the city didn't really convince me to go there, even though I was still curious. Some of my former female colleagues told me they never walked around the office because it was too unsafe. A lot of drugs stuff over there. So after a day of work, they directly drove out of the parking garage back home without hanging around in the city, since it was too unsafe in many parts. My managers were stuck in traffic a lot, doing Zoom meetings during their commutes. One of the colleagues came to Europe and wasn't allowed to bring a gun with her, which made her feel very uncomfortable. As a European, I found these things quite shocking, honestly.

The biggest empty spots that stand out to me are Algeria, the Southern Cone of South America (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay), and Mongolia. Would love to see content from you guys from any of these countries.

great video! i've been to pittsburg twice but that was to see hockey games lol. i stayed downtown within walking distance to the hockey arena. there are some great restaurants downtown and the zoo (in the upper part of the city - where the elevator thingie went) was great. but, yeah, it's a little rough and worn around the edges.
So you mentioned at the end of this vid that you would be spending more time in the U.S. later this summer, which states do you plan on visiting? Have you any experience in southern states other than Florida?
Pittsburg is considered a working-class, blue collar, hard-nosed city with proud citizens. Lots of immigrant influence and interesting history. I'm glad you visited middle America and sampled its' flavors. If you really want an experience, come to Atlanta.
I think the word you guys are looking for is "gritty". 🤔 Yay, can't wait to see more shows from the U.S.! (P.S. I was just in Toronto. Their downtown is the same as any big city in America, unfortunately.)
I am SO excited that you're coming to my city! I know I'm a stranger, but I would love to show you around to all the best vegan places in Toronto. We have a dedicated vegan sushi restaurant, a couple of them actually, we have vegan Caribbean, we have almost any kind of ethnic cuisine vegan style you can get here. We have the Veg Fest in September, and close by cities also have their own Veg Fest around the summer time. There's the paved trail along the waterfront so you can take a nice bike ride along the lake. There are nice places to go hiking. There are interactive exhibits. Our Royal Ontario Museum is pretty cool. There's an art museum. There's something to do for any kind of person any day of the week. Please feel free to message me if you would like a tour guide while you're here. There's also a dedicated vegan grocer that's independent that has an amazing selection of all sorts of foods. They have smoked salmon that's actually made of carrots, they have a ridiculous selection of cheese, toiletries., sweets, different milks, almost anything you can think of. We do also have whole foods, but I like to support independent businesses when I can.
You may want to look into Moraga, CA to settle down in. It's relatively affordable for SF Bay Area. Great schools and surrounded by nature. About 40 minutes drive to SFO and 30 minutes drive to SF. Safe and people are friendly. There is no BART station but you are about 10 minutes away from Lafayette and Orinda which both have a BART station. There is a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's in Lafayette. Prices in SF has come down quite a bit but school system is suspect.
So funny story (re lost items), my mom once left her camera on a flight at JFK (she was the last family member to get an iPhone) and she volunteered me to pick it up since I was transiting like two days later. It was literally like a CIA operation because the only information she gave she gave security were my name and driver's license number and all the photos on the camera would be of her three dogs. I swear the TSA agent was struggling to keep a straight face saying "Describe the dogs. Are they playing? Is one asking for a belly rub? Is there a judgmental cat in the background" before they were able to hand over the camera 🤣
Great video as always 🥰. There’s a fairly new and super (ridiculously) expensive new market in Los Angeles, mainly on the westside area called Erewhon. Whole Food market is cheap in comparison. Membership is $20 a month or $200 a year. You don’t need to be a member to shop there. If you plan to travel to Southern California, you may want to check it out 😊.
I screamed when the video started because I’m from Pittsburgh but also I was like “WHY are they HERE?!” I do have a modicum of hometown pride but can definitely agree that the city (downtown proper anyway) is really suffering. My office is downtown but we have worked from home since 2020. I go into the office occasionally and sadly, never feel very comfortable walking around downtown. And I used to LOVE my lunch break walks down there too. Thank you for visiting and finding some positive aspects while you were here!
OMG I was in PIT a few weeks ago to meet colleagues and get a vibe check! Compared to the (Pacific) west coast cities, I found the city to be more beautiful and safer. Lots of historical homes, better architecture, pretty solid food scene (esp West Indian and Middle Eastern) and lush, bright greenery.
I loved this video and seeing your reactions to Pittsburgh. I am sad though that you didn’t find a good walkable neighborhood for dining and socializing. They definitely exist in Pittsburgh. Your point about not assuming downtown is the best neighborhood for visitors is very true. Btw the nickname of Whole Foods is “whole paycheck”. 😅

I grew up in NYC, and its so hard to compare anyplace else in the United States. It's one of the top cities in the world. I also spent two years living in Pittsburgh, and I'm glad to got to experience the charm of the Duquesne Incline and that amazing view of the Three Rivers. I think your takeaway is fair, Pgh is a bit rough but also has some adorable suburbs. It's NOT Philadelphia, but is definitely more "Midwest" -- an old rustbelt city that has rebounded from the post-Industrial age well.
Awesome video! Yes, I would like to see more US videos. We are such a big country, with so many different areas. As an American myself, I can agree that yes, Americans have this tendency to overshare regarding their lives. I've been guilty of this in the past. The only times I've been to Pittsburgh are passing through on Amtrak trains on the way to somewhere else. I may be making Pittsburgh a destination after seeing your video though. I have points through Amtrak that I'm trying to figure out where to use. If you are looking for a city that has been listed as one of the best places in the US to live, check out Green Bay WI. I live about 40 miles from there, and would be happy to take you both on a comprehensive tour of Green Bay.
Dan and Oskar may not know this, but in the US we refer to Whole Foods as “Whole Paycheck”. It’s a wonderful store, but it can be a place for some massive sticker shock!
As ever good to see you both,in a city I actually - apart from the river & the funicular tram car as a point of reference - I hardlyrecognise,I spent at most a few days at a time either on site or passed out in my hotel. It was pure work, managing an almost entirely British team,of specialist painters,cabinet makers ,gilders & curtain makers & fitters ,on my first $million job,doing up a rather large house,the client had stayed in the English country home of an early client & wanted it exactly reproduced. Tragically one of many earthworks - McKees Rocks - a burial mound & sacred space around it,it's believed that like the destruction of others sites,artifacts are either in family homes or just lost or destroyed. It was built by the Native Adena people & then the Hopewell,,the largest mound in Western Pennsylvania,it was 16feet tall & 85feet wide & dated to between 500BCE - 1000CE was utterly destroyed as was all but,less than 10% of ancient mounds &,earthworks, that were noted by early explorers of the supposedly empty continent.There was an excavation of sorts in 1896 by the Carnegie Museum who found 33 body's along with various artifacts,the ones that weren't lost or destroyed are still in storage in the museum basement, though the descendants of the displaced & murdered tribe would like them reburied. From my base in Chelsea I can walk to two Whole Foods stores,though with the unbelievable rise in the cost of food in the UK, gone are the days of doing my whole shop there,I've also got Harrods Food Halls,which if I'm going to spend that sort of money I'd rather go there. Earplugs 100% addicted to my Boots own brand foam ones & pink noise playing all night, when neighbours have complained of car alarms or party noise,I've been oblivious. I was going to recommend visiting Detroit, but if the vibes weren't vibing for Pittsburg, not sure what your experience would like in Detroit. You would definitely have to have a specific trip planned (like maybe staying in Royal or Ferndale for a night or two and staying in Downtown Detroit for a night) and doing it in the summer when there are more people out. Otherwise I don't think you would enjoy it. But I feel like you all would love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Especially Marquette. Big enough to have some choices for food and whatnot but surrounded by nature (even some that is accessible without a car).
I'm glad you made the best of Pittsburgh. What you said about American cities is true for many of them but not all. Boston, NYC, Washington are cities with downtowns. San Francisoco and Chicago have vibrant downtowns. All cities are different to some extent. I wouldn't vote US urban life that great outside of the cities I mentioned. You need to experience the size and space of the US. Visit the wilder places.

There's the paved trail along the waterfront so you can take a nice bike ride along the lake. There are nice places to go hiking. There are interactive exhibits. Our Royal Ontario Museum is pretty cool. There's an art museum. There's something to do for any kind of person any day of the week. Please feel free to message me if you would like a tour guide while you're here. There's also a dedicated vegan grocer that's independent that has an amazing selection of all sorts of foods. They have smoked salmon that's actually made of carrots, they have a ridiculous selection of cheese, toiletries., sweets, different milks, almost anything you can think of. We do also have whole foods, but I like to support independent businesses when I can.
P.s., we also have THE best Pride in the world!!! And I'm not just saying that!!! I hope you'll be here for it at the end of the month!!!

You may want to look into Moraga, CA to settle down in. It's relatively affordable for SF Bay Area. Great schools and surrounded by nature. About 40 minutes drive to SFO and 30 minutes drive to SF. Safe and people are friendly. There is no BART station but you are about 10 minutes away from Lafayette and Orinda which both have a BART station. There is a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's in Lafayette. Prices in SF has come down quite a bit but school system is suspect.

So funny story (re lost items), my mom once left her camera on a flight at JFK (she was the last family member to get an iPhone) and she volunteered me to pick it up since I was transiting like two days later. It was literally like a CIA operation because the only information she gave she gave security were my name and driver's license number and all the photos on the camera would be of her three dogs. I swear the TSA agent was struggling to keep a straight face saying "Describe the dogs. Are they playing? Is one asking for a belly rub? Is there a judgmental cat in the background" before they were able to hand over the camera 🤣

Great video as always 🥰. There’s a fairly new and super (ridiculously) expensive new market in Los Angeles, mainly on the westside area called Erewhon. Whole Food market is cheap in comparison. Membership is $20 a month or $200 a year. You don’t need to be a member to shop there. If you plan to travel to Southern California, you may want to check it out 😊.

I screamed when the video started because I’m from Pittsburgh but also I was like “WHY are they HERE?!” I do have a modicum of hometown pride but can definitely agree that the city (downtown proper anyway) is really suffering. My office is downtown but we have worked from home since 2020. I go into the office occasionally and sadly, never feel very comfortable walking around downtown. And I used to LOVE my lunch break walks down there too.

OMG I was in PIT a few weeks ago to meet colleagues and get a vibe check! Compared to the (Pacific) west coast cities, I found the city to be more beautiful and safer. Lots of historical homes, better architecture, pretty solid food scene (esp West Indian and Middle Eastern) and lush, bright greenery.
I loved this video and seeing your reactions to Pittsburgh. I am sad though that you didn’t find a good walkable neighborhood for dining and socializing. They definitely exist in Pittsburgh. Your point about not assuming downtown is the best neighborhood for visitors is very true. Btw the nickname of Whole Foods is “whole paycheck”. 😅

I grew up in NYC, and its so hard to compare anyplace else in the United States. It's one of the top cities in the world. I also spent two years living in Pittsburgh, and I'm glad to got to experience the charm of the Duquesne Incline and that amazing view of the Three Rivers.
I think your takeaway is fair, Pgh is a bit rough but also has some adorable suburbs. It's NOT Philadelphia, but is definitely more "Midwest" -- an old rustbelt city that has rebounded from the post-Industrial age well.

Awesome video! Yes, I would like to see more US videos. We are such a big country, with so many different areas. As an American myself, I can agree that yes, Americans have this tendency to overshare regarding their lives. I've been guilty of this in the past. The only times I've been to Pittsburgh are passing through on Amtrak trains on the way to somewhere else. I may be making Pittsburgh a destination after seeing your video though. I have points through Amtrak that I'm trying to figure out where to use. If you are looking for a city that has been listed as one of the best places in the US to live, check out Green Bay WI. I live about 40 miles from there, and would be happy to take you both on a comprehensive tour of Green Bay.

As ever good to see you both,in a city I actually - apart from the river & the funicular tram car as a point of reference - I hardlyrecognise,I spent at most a few days at a time either on site or passed out in my hotel. It was pure work, managing an almost entirely British team,of specialist painters,cabinet makers ,gilders & curtain makers & fitters ,on my first $million job,doing up a rather large house,the client had stayed in the English country home of an early client & wanted it exactly reproduced.
Tragically one of many earthworks - McKees Rocks - a burial mound & sacred space around it,it's believed that like the destruction of others sites,artifacts are either in family homes or just lost or destroyed. It was built by the Native Adena people & then the Hopewell,,the largest mound in Western Pennsylvania,it was 16feet tall & 85feet wide & dated to between 500BCE - 1000CE was utterly destroyed as was all but,less than 10% of ancient mounds &,earthworks, that were noted by early explorers of the supposedly empty continent.There was an excavation of sorts in 1896 by the Carnegie Museum who found 33 body's along with various artifacts,the ones that weren't lost or destroyed are still in storage in the museum basement, though the descendants of the displaced & murdered tribe would like them reburied.
From my base in Chelsea I can walk to two Whole Foods stores,though with the unbelievable rise in the cost of food in the UK, gone are the days of doing my whole shop there,I've also got Harrods Food Halls,which if I'm going to spend that sort of money I'd rather go there.
Earplugs 100% addicted to my Boots own brand foam ones & pink noise playing all night, when neighbours have complained of car alarms or party noise,I've been oblivious.

I was going to recommend visiting Detroit, but if the vibes weren't vibing for Pittsburg, not sure what your experience would like in Detroit. You would definitely have to have a specific trip planned (like maybe staying in Royal or Ferndale for a night or two and staying in Downtown Detroit for a night) and doing it in the summer when there are more people out. Otherwise I don't think you would enjoy it.
But I feel like you all would love the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Especially Marquette. Big enough to have some choices for food and whatnot but surrounded by nature (even some that is accessible without a car).
I'm glad you made the best of Pittsburgh. What you said about American cities is true for many of them but not all. Boston, NYC, Washington are cities with downtowns. San Francisoco and Chicago have vibrant downtowns. All cities are different to some extent. I wouldn't vote US urban life that great outside of the cities I mentioned. You need to experience the size and space of the US. Visit the wilder places.
