Great recipe! I used kiwis instead of pears and it was very tender.

Hi Maangchi! i just made this for my family tonight. It was marinated overnight, and the taste is heavenly!! we all agreed no more korean restaurant Galbi for us. It's much cheaper to make this at home :) Happy happy. Thank you for your recipe :)

I made a version of this today
    1/3c mirin
    1/3c soy sauce
1/4c brown sugar substituted for the honey I thought I had and didnt.
    black pepper
    2 teaspoons sesame oil
    2 small pears
    1 onion
    8 cloves of garlic
    a chunk of ginger
a pound and a half of top round roast sliced 1/4 inch
I let it marinade for about 4 hours then grilled it over a charcoal hibachi
I didn't have all the side dishes soi made due with Jasmine rice, some grilled mushrooms and green onion. i used sambal sauce and wrapped it in romaine lettuce. it was amazing even though it was pretty much improvised. I could only imagine how much better it would be with the full on experience.

Are the pears making the short ribs tender? I did mine without adding the pears. And it came out tough. I bought the ribs from Korean supermarket. Any suggestions on how to make it tender?

The LA style galbi was a hit with the family! The marinade for the short ribs was really easy to make and delicious, but I have to say that the ssam-jjang was particularly tasty. During these times when we can't visit our regular restaurants as often as we would like, it's been great to try out your recipes. I would say that they are better than restaurant quality!

she mentions in the decription that you can use a pan but i'm sure a normal grill will also works fine, just buy some sort of grill mat first so the meat doesn't fall through. If you really want to use what she is, you should be able to find it at a large asian grocery store like H Mart.

I make these all the time in an apartment. I put these on a broiler pan ( with slots + collector pan on bottom ). I adjust the shelf so, with the pan on it, the kalbi would be 1.5-2 inches from the element. Then I set oven on broil, and it's perfect. If your oven has no broiler pan, you should buy one at Target, Williams Sonoma, or order one from an oven manufacturer. If not, you'll have grease EVERYWHERE & a fire on your sheet pan - lots of grease!

I made your recipe today and it was SO good! I broiled it. It turned out so tender. I just wish the LA galbi meat wasn't so expensive at the store. Great recipe, thanks again!

@chunkatty LA style beef short ribs are cut thinly, so they are very tender. Use your grill, no problem. Mine is disposable. It's already gone. : ) I broil my LA galbi and it always turns out delicious. Charcoal bbq? It's the best! Let me know how your bbq turns out.
