    PREBOREAL LYRICS:
    no grasp on reality, attention shaping identities
    we’ve lost our capacities
    to construct something tangible
    obfuscate the past
    implode it with the future into
    an undifferentiated mass
    It’s never-ending
    a type of never-ending
    never-ending presence, lost inside
    we have all lost our way out long ago
    the spectacle is not a cluster of images
    rather it’s a social relation
    mediated by all those images:
    images are all there is
    the quality of life is being impoverished
    embrace the loss of knowledge
    and critical thinking
    the spectacle
    is not a cluster of images, rather it’s a social relation
    mediated by all those images:
    images are all there is
    the quality of life is being impoverished
    we embrace the rash degradation of knowledge and
    critical thought
    critical thought
    we are no longer critical
    the spectacle is not a cluster of images, rather, it’s a social relation
    mediated by all those images:
    images are all there is
    the quality of life is being impoverished
    we embrace the rash degradation of knowledge
    and critical thought
    critical thought
    we are not
    critical

      The spoken words are a quote by the Isidore Ducasse (1870):
      «Les idées s'améliorent. Le sens des mots y participe. Le plagiat est nécessaire. Le progrès l'implique. Il serre de près la phrase d'un auteur, se sert de ses expressions, efface une idée fausse, la remplace par l'idée juste.»
      "Ideas improve. The sense of words takes part in it. Plagiarism is necessary. Progress involves it. It embraces the word of an author, uses its expressions, erases a false idea, replaces it by a the proper idea."

      Confirmed. I asked Robin the last time they played in Austin (early December) about a new album and he confirmed it was a sequel/ follow up to the ongoing precambrian/ phanerozoic album themes. So stoked to see the completion of this saga. Maybe a follow up to the heliocentric/anthropocentric themes next!! Or a pelagial sequel coming back up the depths...

    Gosh I love the philosphical references of the Ocean more and more. Very strong "La société du spectacle" vibes (french 1967 book about the degradation of life due to the nature of capitalism conditionning it to a relation to consumption and the influence it has on every media and culture) + direct quotes from Isidore Ducasse who kinda ... warned us about pointless trends and the degradation of culture/knowledge in ... 1870.
    Edit: I feel a little dumb now, the "strong vibes" are actually direct quotes from "The Society of the Spectacle".

    • @Stroopwafels112
      @Stroopwafels112 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Truth! The spoken word part is even more of a direct quote since it's in the source language.

    • @cd5642
      @cd5642 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, however today Capitalism has turned into a WEC created global Stakeholder Capitalism, which is Fascistic by definition. It removes all individual rights and places them with the Governments and Corporations. You no longer have the ability to invest and use things you believe in. For instance, if you feel it’s your right to protect your life with a gun, the Government now will use giant investment groups like Blackrock to decide that they won’t invest in gun companies, in turn now you cannot invest in gun companies because eventually it all goes through a handful of giant “banks”. Those gun manufacturers now cannot get loans/financial backing and go out of business. Capitalism used free market, it works great until governments choose winners and losers through chosen monopoly busting, bailing out those deemed too big to fail, and over regulating which stifles small businesses. We have seen this movement towards believing in our governments, no matter what, as they lie to our faces because of the propaganda in our schools, on the news, and online. It’s been done by division into groups. If you believe in herd over individual, you belong to a certain group. If you believe in freedom and individual rights over the herd mentality, you are now deemed a terrorist. They have taken a piece from Mao, Stalin, Hitler, and Mussolini to name a few. Use fascism from Mussolini, divide populations into groups, name those groups as good and evil, and destroy evil by any means necessary to have a population that obeys. Until each side can listen to each and think critically, the governments and corporations will continue to race towards full dominance. This isn’t conspiracy, it’s history repeating itself on a global scale and if we don’t all see the signs now, we will all be starved out together.

    • @allanf_
      @allanf_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

      3:13 in French, is this what you mean? Can you help identifying the actual quote?

    • @matthieugeorgelin5671
      @matthieugeorgelin5671 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@allanf_ "Les idées s’améliorent. Le sens des mots y participe. Le plagiat est nécessaire. Le progrès l’implique. Il serre de près la phrase d’un auteur, se sert de ses expressions, efface une idée fausse, la remplace par l’idée juste." It's a quote by an old (1870) french autor, Isidore Ducasse (aka count of Lautréamont). Basically "Ideas are improving. The meaning of the words contributes to it. Plagiarism is necessary. It is implied by progress. It grasps closely the autor's sentence, uses its phrases, erase a false idea, replacing it with a right one". The autor had a theory about how plagiarism can be both good and bad and must be used as a perpetual construction over what's already being built, but must not be just repetition.
      The rest of the lyrics tho seems to be quotes and adaptation of Guy Debord's "The Society of Spectacle" for some.

    • @matthieugeorgelin5671
      @matthieugeorgelin5671 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@cd5642 Ah yes, tell me you're USian without telling me you own a pick-up. Capitalism turns into a dominating relation over people by nature, the government has nothing to do with it.
      Monopoly will happens by the very nature of capitalism especially when financiarized at our current point and inheritance being a thing.
      It just happens that sometimes governments aka political powers collude with economical powers as they see many interests in it, some of which personnal, which is really well showcased by the current case of Russia. Now all of this has nothing to do with fascism which is an ideology about virility, cult of heroism and exemplarism, autoritarianism and is economically tied to governments interaction with the economy as it puts the economic elites and the government in close relation. But no, your "more government = fascism, free market good" is an ideological nonsense that only american people refusing to realize liberalism is one of the main problem of our century believe.
      The economic aspects of fascism are "economic elites support political elites, therefore political elites support economic elites". Which is the exact opposite of the relation between economy and the government in the URSS for instance, where the economy direction IS the government. Both may worsen towards elitism and a pyramidal constitution of society, but they still have nothing related.
      You're basically confusing freedom/human right with individualism, which is the stereotypical liberal take. And I know, liberal means the opposite of conservative to you, but that again is a huge deviation of the original sense of the words, where liberalism used to be a philosophical/economical/political current about a society centered on individualism branded as freedom. (Spoiler: freedom isn't when "no laws", because no laws from government means others laws, often coming back to survival of the fittest).

I then listened to it as the follow up to Phan II and leading into parabiosis and you can see where the story is going. I have to commend the band for playing the long game. On the Vox&Hops Podcast, Robin recently stated this is fully on Pelagic now. Seems like their contract with Metal Blade is us in a harmonious way given how much Pelagic has grown. The change just makes sense.

      If every ocean song sounded like what you expected this one to, the ocean would not be half the band it is. Songs like this are necessary in the context of the album. The ocean albums are greater than the sum of their parts every time

    Love The Ocean but this song's pretty mid, man. I don't really understand everybody in the comments using the word "masterpiece" so carelessly. You guys gotta raise your standards a bit.

    • @GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze
      @GrapeFlavoredAntifreeze ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No, you need to wrap your head around the song way better. First of all the instrumentals are fucking great on this track and mid is about the weakest word I’ve heard used to describe them here. Secondly, this song is a masterpiece at what it is, transitional/introductory track to the Holocene, while also referencing The Society of the Spectacle, which is a book that covers several topics explored in the song, among other things (just read up on it I don’t feel like sitting here for 20 minutes typing). The song provides a commentary on the concepts in the book and could be alluding to concepts in the album we haven’t even had a taste of yet. There’s an argument that can be made that it’s not a masterpiece in a vacuum but knowing the piece of music it’s going to accompany, it is a masterpiece in the role it plays. This album is supposed to be bigger and more enthralling than Phanerozoic II and hearing from people who have heard it and know it well, it seems to have exceeded those expectations. If your argument is that this song sounds too mainstream and poppy then I can’t help you man you really just don’t appreciate everything that’s happening in an ocean song. This song is like an evolved Eocene. That’s it’s apparent function. Is it softer than Jurassic? Yes? Is it softer than Isla del Sol? YES. Does any of that fucking matter? NO. This isn’t Phanerozoic II and this isn’t Fluxion. It’s a new evolving album taking us on a new journey with new sounds, and just like Eocene plays it’s role in making Phanerozoic II a greater final product than the sum of its parts, so will this song. Stop shallowly interpreting a band that simply asks that you think deeply when you listen to them

      @@mindgoblin7068 Yup yup this is it right here lol. Exactly the response I expected. Shallow reply from a thoughtless husk. Now I know who I’m talking to at least. You chose to comment your opinion first on the video. You subject yourself to criticism by doing that smoothbrain. Especially when what you said was very poorly thought out. You’re more interested in being uptight about new experiences than learning from them. Sad. There’s two reasons I comment. The first is to give you the opportunity to have an actual conversation about the topic and exchange ideas and thoughts, and the second is just letting your stupidity speak for itself to other people when you choose to be a little weasel about the conversation you started and can’t finish. I no longer am doing this for you. I’m doing it for people who will take the small amount of time to read a simple handful of sentences.
