That's a beautiful final shot and what a wonderful moment! Thanks for the excellent review - personally I think the 50mmf2 is now more appealing than ever!
I’ve watched a couple of reviews with this vs the 56 1.2 and I struggled to really see a difference in the images. Might be worth buying if you didn’t already have the 56 but doesn’t seem like it’s worth it to upgrade or own both imho.
I have the 56mm. Fantastic lens. Sharp, quick autofocus, no significant distortion. However... Wide open, it has some DEVASTATING purple fringing. I suppose it's par for the course, purple fringing usually creeps in at wider apertures, but it seems like a LOT. I do have the R version, and the newer version utilizes different coatings. It's more expensive, but that might make a big difference.
Loved your colour work and compositions on the urban decay images. Alex’s ‘poke your tongue out’ mountain bike jump technique however made me nervous!! 😂
Thank you for taking us on another journey! After researching the 50mm range, I'm starting to lean toward the XF 50mm f/2. I initially looked past it because of the XF 56mm f/1.2, but the images I've seen from the f/2 are stunning. I think the f/2 makes for a great pairing with the XF 90mm f/2; and like you mentioned, you get the close focus ability, and good autofocus for video. If I absolutely need more low light ability, the Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 is a very appealing option.
I feel similarly. Though I think I still prefer the 56mm 1.2 over the Viltrox, but I wouldn't if I didn't do it semi-professionally at events. For hobby, yes, 50mm f2 and the Viltrox 56mm 1.4, all day.
I’m so content with my 50/2. It’s AF is quick enough to keep up with my kids. It’s saturation and fidelity is absolutely great. The shallow DOF loss of 2.0 over 1.2 really only shows at longer distances like full body shots. Anything under 8’ away you can get all the separation you need.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Have you created a video comparing the low light ability of fast aperture lenses? I haven't used a lens in the f/1.0 to 2 range, so I don't know exactly how limiting f/2 may be in low light situations when compared to f/1.0, 1.2, or 1.4. (Currently using the XF 18-55) I know fast apertures will enable fast shutter speeds to freeze movement at low light events, but are low-noise images achievable at f/2? Using flash would just throw all this out the window, lol 😅
Thank you for your review, you saved me a ton of money. I'm keeping my 56 1.2 and not upgrade. I love the way you review lenses, it just makes more sense. Rather than other YT'ers that are into pixel peeking.
I like seeing subjective testing as a contrast to pixel peeping. Good to balance those two ways of looking at something. I got to play with the 50 F1 at a Fuji event at a local camera store. It was fun. And now I don't have to lust after a lens I'll probably never be able to afford. Now one of the cheap, super fast manual focus primes? That's a bit more attainable.
Well done for supporting others. I have the 50 f2 works for me. For rural decay photography I highly recommend look at Victor Colorado it is amazing! I truly believe that you and Deana and your children would all have a wonderful time photographing there. Old mines.... enjoy!
I’d love to shoot some rural decay. I think the bokeh is nice and smooth but I agree I’m not a huge fan of the chromatic aberration that said for portraits it looks lovely. Thanks again for another great honest review.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Don't be sorry, you may have just saved me a lot of cash! lol. I just rewatched your video on the 90, now I'm even more excited for it to arrive tomorrow! Thanks!
I have a full Sony kit with 7 lenses, I bought the XT4 because I want to simplify my photography experience, go a little vintage, and be happy with “vintage quality” lol
I very much appreciate the action test, I shoot mountain biking often in low light under trees and sunset/twilight, which is why I was interested. So it was excellent to see the continuous autofocus test and realise it’s not the lens for me. Thanks, enjoyable video 😊
Man, this is the first review saying that the 50 struggles with (eye)focus and that it is soft wide open. Whats going on? Could you have a faulty copy or are people just singing the praises and preaching to their own congregation? Must say I am confused, but thank you for an excellent and very interesting review!
@@AndrewGoodCamera did eye AF work better when your subject wasn’t wearing glasses? I’ve repeatedly found that Fuji eye AF isn’t very smart when compared Sony. I would expect glasses or other objects like helmets that are close to the eye to confuse it.
@@chadrem oh I'm sure the glasses made harder. But even with the 56 1.2 it misses focus on occasion in simpler circumstances. It's going to miss sometimes at f1, even in ideal circumstances.
The Moment this lens was released there was a firmware update for all x series bodies, if the camera didn’t get the update? Then that explains the poor AF.
Andrew, I have grown to trust you word as an honest reviewer. This video confirms that trust, especially considering the ravenous demand for this lens. Thanks as always.
Whoa! An honest review. I don’t shoot Fuji, but I bought a 7 Artisans 50 f1.1 for US $250, and it’s a bit soft wide open but acceptable for portraits (manual focus, of course). I probably wouldn’t spend much more than that for a really fast lens. You’re right though, shooting wide open all the time is a one trick pony, although I do like it with full body shots at times. There are times soft bokeh is nice, or even handy, but you don’t want to become dependent on it.
get the zhongyi speedmaster 35mm 0.95 latest version for around 400$. I tried a lot of the fast lenses and this one is by far the best. great colours great focusring, easy to focus.. You need to buy a lenshood to control flares a little and to have a better grip without bumping the f-stop but beside that..Just get it and be happy. (For non Fuji shooters, dont get it. I dont know why, but theese lenses work awesome on fujis but terrible on sonys. on fuji great colour and sharpness but on sony its soft with average colours)
I think the zhongyi is made for crop sensors and micro four thirds. I’m pretty sure it won’t work on a full frame sensor without severe vignetting. I used to have one on my Olympus, but dropped it and it broke in half. So, be careful with it. They look and feel well built, but are quite fragile.
I tested the fullframe and the aps c versions from zhongyi for sony and both were underwhelming. No competitin at all to how this lens behaves on a fuji
Well since my first love is action photography, I will rock the 50mmf2🙏 shot a ton of action on my 23mmf2 and that thing rocks for it! The 50mmf2 is a nice companion for it👌🏼
I am coming back to this video, still unsure if I want to go this route for a portrait lens. Looking at the video again, and your other ones, I wish so much that you would put what settings you are shooting at for the picture. For this one in particular where it is known to get more sharp at 2.8, it would be awesome to know if you are shooting wide open or stepped down some in some of these pictures. Thank you for the content - just a suggestion.
Not specifically this lens, but I was considering getting a fast aperture 50mm equivalent lens. I don't take many portraits and my bokeh obsession is restricted to macros. Already having the 18-55 kit lens, will I really benefit from a faster lens?
Good review, I've got the Olympus 25mm Pro lens I've barely tried using, so I'll be keen to see how it works with auto eye focus. I'm just getting used to my X100 F I bought 2nd hand. I took it away to the country and took a few rural decay images. I didn't know that term. Plus a few of our boarder control police which is new for us here in Australia. I need to get out and do some street photography since I can't travel. Thanks for the great work you put into your channel.
I appreciate and have always appreciated your honesty. I'm sorry you got stuck with that lens, but I like the fact that you said Fuji's eye auto focus isn't quite up to snuff and as much as I like Fuji, I have to agree with you. Good luck with the sale of that lens and I hope you don't take a beating on it. That lens is bad for its price, it's a niche lens. I believe I remember that you use a Canon for your event work and Fuji for fun. I would be more inclined to buy the viltrox 56 f1.4 and 23 f1.4.
Firmware 1.10. Regarding it's poor AF performance in my video, I think it's mostly the glasses throwing things off. It certainly performs better when nothing is in between the camera and the eye. However, it's still far from perfect and portrait photographers can expect to get misses, especially in less than ideal circumstances.
The Decorations that you saw were Day of the Dead decor and what looked like the shrines/altar that are meant to honor the dead relatives in our families. They usually involve leaving offerings so that the relative's spirits can make their way back to the land of the living on Nov 2nd which is the Day of the Dead.
Are you saying you are from Cedar City and that those are specifically for your family? Or are you saying that those decorations are cultural appropriation of what you celebrate?
@@AndrewGoodCamera Oh no, I was just explaining what the decorations were were for haha. I'm Mexican and it's part of our culture and a tradition so the way it was setup meant it was being celebrated which I think is awesome to see.
That kid rips! You should probably tell him to keep his tounge in while jumping, I've seen some nasty accidents and for the looks of his skills, he likes to bike!
Save your money and get the Viltrox 56mm f1.4 Im blown away with the price and quality of my copy! And thank you for another honest review Andrew, that's why people like me keep coming here, stay safe and all the best to you and your family.
This is my go to standard studio lens. With most “cheaper” flash equipment the wider f-range is unreachable and then the f2 is more then great! But if you can go wide open then its a great lens! Outside I use the f2 for the weight.
thanks for the hones t review. while this is not a lens that interests me it's still good to get a true perspective. on the biking front, you remind me a whole lot of Floyd Landis!! minus the doping of course!
I was actually surprised to see you order this lens given your previous bokeh comments. ;) A good real world review and kinda reinforces this to be a niche lens as Fuji’s messaging was saying...or at least how I interpreted their messaging in all their promoting of the lens. All comparisons I have seen between 50 f1 and 56 f1.2 seem that the output is so very close the only reason to get the 50 f1 is if you need WR and potentially better focus (pending more firmware). I didn’t do the math but I suspect the depth of field between a 50mm f1 and 56 f1.2 are super close which would explain the similar output. But to each there own. I am still happy with my 50 f2 for exactly the same reason you stated, the close focus distance. Just love the closer detail options. Awesome video Andrew.
Yeah, for me it wouldn't be about the bokeh, only low light and event work. But I was skeptical, even for that. FUIFILM can call this a niche lens, but I call that b.s. I think that's what you have to say when you know that it's not a responsible lens to put in the hands of most photographers. But I think they are counting on most (newer) photographers really wanting this lens, and this lens being the reason that many photogarphers will feel okay moving to Fuji instead of FF. That's what's really happening here (at least imo).
Love your photo adventures and gear talk. A low light test with this lens would be fun. Since light is the unique thing with the lens. Do a low light adventure with this and some other lenses, please! :)
Stopping this down to f1.2 you get more bokeh out of the 56 f1.2 at ½ weight, size and ⅔ the price. You can also get those used and they don't have a lot of chromatic issues at all. They should have made this an updated 35mm with linear motors and f1.2 which is a main lens for most shooters.
Been looking forward to this review. I'm in two minds about this lens. I don't shoot portraiture and the price is eye wateringly high. It's going to cost more than my X-T3.
I really really love the look of your pictures. The tones and colors are great! Can you share a couple of hints to get that "Portra/pastel" yet colorful look of yours? I've been chasing that results for months in my post processing :)
The 56mm 1.2 APD comes with a 3 stop ND filter. Weird that this one doesn't. Btw, just so you know, I think image quality CAN be a little lower when using electronic shutter. Its a long time since I read about it, so maybe its not an issue with modern cameras.
That's true if you're in artificial light, or if you are using hybrid electronic and physical curtain, lower shutter speeds, or if there is fast movement. Otherwise, there is no difference.
Hey Andrew it‘s unfortunate that the lens performed so bad. Did you try it in a low light/night scenario? Other photographers got really good results with this lens. I think this lens would perform better in low light. Did you also try portraits on people without glasses? Maybe that was also an issue because of the shallow DoF. I‘d love to see a follow-up video for this lens. And try also manual focusing to show some results with that shallow DoF.
Clearly, the lens / camera struggled with the glasses situation. I probably could have done more to explain that it isn't as bad in ideal circumstances. But as photographers, we aren't always in ideal circumstances and so Im not sure it matters. The measure of a technology is how it performs under stress.
I wonder why some reviewers found it super sharp and some had the opposite experience. I hope it's not a tolerated variation on their Quality Assurance department. Good video, very sweet too.
I would never refer to this lens as super Sharp wide open compared to other modern lenses. But it certainly super sharp compared to older lenses. It's all relative. It's probably fine for most people's needs as far as sharpness goes. And for a portrait lens you don't really want razor sharpness anyway.
At the beginning, I was worried it would go the way of your Triumph bike... By the halfway point my thoughts had changed to "nope, not like the Triumph - the way he's talking sounds strikingly like me and the Olympus Pro f1.2 lenses, or the newer Lumix bodies". On the flipside though, you won't have to give Denae puppy eyes to keep it if it doesn't mesh with what you want from the lens...
1:01 I'm really surprised you couldn't hear Denea yelling in the background "NO! We're returning it. You don't NEED it!" At least, that's how this situation would go in my house. Then I would have probably kept it anyway.
I really don't enjoy getting into sharpness debates, because really, it's silly. But according to my in-depth sharpness tests, the 56 1.2 is not all that sharp on the spectrum of Fuji lenses. I haven't tested these two side by side, because I just don't care. But saying it's sharper than the 56mm 1.2 wide open isn't saying a lot.
This is a helpful review, Andrew. And a good contrast to some of the hype about this lens. It’s certainly interesting, but it doesn’t appeal to me. It may be best suited for controlled studio work.
@@AndrewGoodCamera yours seems more honest. That chromatic aberration looks nuts. Maybe other reviewers didn’t experience it. I don’t know. But for sure if one is a brand ambassador they are hesitant to criticize. I’d put you on the “more honest” side of the scale. Regrading the lens, I think it sounds cool and I actually considered it, but I don’t know what I would really do with paper-thin depth of field. I always want better low light capability, but for now I am fine with letting Acros turn 12,800 ISO into pebbly grain. :-)
I appreciate the honesty. I’ve been using the xt3 for some time now and the auto focus has let me down on quite a few occasions in video and in photos. I’ve had to shoot Manually a lot to compensate. I still love the camera but no matter what gets updated I don’t think it will compete with the Sony and cannon experience with regards to auto focus. But that’s not why I bought the camera. I bought it because it’s way cheaper for the choices you can make with it and the colours are just inspiring. I think Id be happy with the 56 and saving my money and the weight. The fringing is on par with what I got from my canon 35 1.4 mki and that was released in 1998😃 just bought a fringer adaptor and have started using all my old canon glass just to make my life more difficult. Wish me luck and good luck selling the lens in this current climate.
About the chromatic aberrasjon problems at f1, is it worse or better than the 56mm at 1.2? Im especially interested to know how this aspect of the lens compares to the APD version of the 56, in case you own that. I recently got it into my head that I was gonna switch back to full frame Nikon and I bought a D750 + the 85mm 1.8G because that would get me basically the same fov and dof as the 56. But I quickly noticed that the 85 had a lot of that "green in the background and purple in the foreground" fringing going on. So I gained a new respect for the 56 because of that. The 56 is not perfect ofc, but its better than the 85. What Im trying to say is, that is why I'd be very interested in a comparison between the 50 f1 and the 56 f1.2. Btw, can you not return the lens and get a refund?
The 56 1.2 absolutely performs admirably in the area of controlling CA. I really love that lens, which is why this 50mm f1 feels so superfluous to me. But I'm also coming from the position that bokeh is overrated, so keep that in mind :)
hi, Andrew. thanks very much for the video, and your solid shots/pics. ;) , as always. It’s not the 1st time you show us, you guys mountain biking. i’m really glad for you, as it is vital, to having a physical activity that makes one sweat. And you chose one of the best (yes! i love MTB at least as much as i love Photography) . As for this lens....and Fujifilm, in general.... Well... I was pretty disappointed when they dropped the 33mm focal length for the 50mm.. a while back. The other day, i saw a couple of videos on this one, and i was even more disappointed. WAY more.. It almost killed the Fuji mojo, for me. i mean... what a flop of a lens..imo. Brings almost nothing new, to the table ...and it is so expensive.. If it wasn’t for the 16mm f1.4 and the pancake lens...i swear i’d sell my Fujifilm gear. They have sort of ...stalled .. imo, Nothing new that is really interesting.. And the 2021 roadmap has nothing extraordinary either..i believe. I feel i’m glad i shoot Sony and Nikon too......because i could never stay with Fuji alone. And..don’t get me wrong.. i love Fujifilm. What about you guys ? i know Denae really loves it, specially due to the overall system’s size and image quality. What about yourself.. Do you find yourself looking to the side, at other brands, often, these days..? (btw.. did you return the Panasonic FF S1H ? i remember you saying your were trying it out for the hybrid shooter approach..) thanks again cheers from Portugal
Oh man... I could do a video just on answering your questions here. My relationship with Fuji is complicated. A couple things I'll say. Like you, I was bummed by this lens release. I would have MUCH preferred an improvement to some old lenses, most especially that 35mm 1.4. And yes, we sold the S1H. It's incredible, but the X-T4 is perfectly adequate for what we need and is a lot more responsible financially :) As for my preferred shooting, for most almost every photo and videography situation, we are completely satisfied with FUJI and will continue to use it. However, for my ruralscape work, which I have begun to take more and more serious, I don't feel APS-C is cutting it. After seeing what incredible detail I can get with MF, it's hard to go back. And I have to say, I've preferred Hasselblad medium format over GFX. But it's hard to commit to that system when we have a subscribership that mostly shoots Fuji. It would negatively affect the channel to double down on Hassy MF. Anyway, those are some of the things I've been thinking about lately. First world problems, all. :)
@@AndrewGoodCamera hi Andrew, Thanks very much for the reply.. I had got the impression that ..yes..you weren’t 100% sold on the GFX, but i hadn’t realized you actually preferred the Hasseblad. (As an architect, i have considered a Mamya a few times, in the past.....but i didn’t want to go to film.. Still, Large Format i believe, makes a difference. A solid enough current digital MedFormat setup is a nice practical solution, though. I agree with you that..staying with the GFX is a nice ‘compromise’.) Honestly, and i’ve said this before, i reckon your rural decay stuff , ;) is in deed your very personal niche. I love all your stuff, from the ‘finding a shot’....to the willingness to actually communicate emotionally & visually , to your excellent image editing and aesthetics...but it is the road trips, specially the ones you do on your own, when you take a few days and get on a motorbike...that you really come into your own. there’s a true voice there, no doubt. it’s just a pity that..nowadays..it is very hard to monetize our talent....specially in Photography...as it is so banal... Nevertheless..i am really glad to hear/read you saying you’re taking it more and more seriously. it takes quite a good chunk of emotional strength and inner work, to become aware and conscious of the way(s) we hinder our strongest inner-voices.. Kudos to you, man ;) . As for Fujifilm ..yes i agree with everything you said. For sure. (And i know that you don’t like Fujifilm support either.. hehe) Yes, it seems to being the best fit for your daily tool, both of you. Speaking of which.. Evidently, the close distance shots are one of your favourite things...and i really appreciate them. I am under the impression you own both the 80mm macro AND the 90mm f2... Or have you only kept the 90mm..? This is to say that... i wish u did/showed us more macro and close distance stuff. either ruralscape or not. ;) I namely share your exact approach on the getting out of the usual 35 & 85mm focal distances... The 80mm macro + the 16mm f1.4 vídeo u made on the canyon, a while back now...is still one of my favorites too. PS: Have you tried adapting MF lenses to the GFX ? PPS: have you come around to trying out the infra-red conversion on the X-T1 you bought a few months ago ? ;)
@@V4D2 I actually sold both the 80mm 2.8 and the infra-red x-t1 (along with a ton of other things) when we lost our event income. We're fine still, but definitely didn't have the same sort of expendable income. I actually prefer the 16mm 1.4 for up close detail shots to the 80mm 2.8. I like close and wide. And yes, I am only adapting with GFX as can't quite make the lenses work in the budget. I've been using Mamiya lenses with good results. I just don't like how stiff the focus is.
I think for now I probably stick to my 56mm f1.2, it’s way sharp enough for me and like the weight it’s not light not too heavy. Sometimes ignorance is bliss.
Eye AF is a camera problem, not (only or primary) a lens problem. Have you used the X T4 or the X T3? The X T3 is much worse (I have both). Both get irritated easily by glasses, hair, caps, helmets,... no matter, what lens you use. Newest firmware for camera and lens?

The original intent of this lens is low light B/W photography that’s the purpose of its design, not for colour work or portrait photography. Although you could force it to do these things but it’s not the right tool.
I have and still experienced a better performance using the Sigma EF primes via fringer pro 2 adapter. Great lens however I somewhat disappointed. Auto focus gets a c minus
@@BB-ft6nd Nah. Only messes with the bokeh if you use hybrid mechanical and electronic or if you've got artificial light. As far as protecting the front element, why would you spend all that money on superb optics to put a sub-par slice of glass between it and what you're photographing? You lose light gathering and you introduce flaring, and often it affects the color (and maybe worse, depending on brand). Front elements are made extremely durable these days. The only reason I'd ever use an ND, or any filter, is for video.
@@AndrewGoodCamera I've used the combo and the results were great. I'm keeping my 50mm f/1.0... In super bright conditions a quality two or three-stop ND is the way to go, there is no discernable impact. Just don't use a cheap one. Also, DP review recommends doing the same with the 1.0.
It's a beast! and to me, I can't justify the cost for what you get out of this lens...I get plenty of bokeh from the 16mmf/1.4, and that was the most I would want to spend on a lens, so this one is thumbs down for me ( if I was a pro portrait guy, I would be using a Sony, but I'm not so...)
Sounds like the perfect way to test the limits of a lens to me. If I was shooting on a Sony or Canon it's be no issue. And with a Fuji lens that focuses more reliably and has a wider min depth of field, it'd also be less of a problem. So Id say this was a the perfect way to test a lens. Feel free to watch the dozens of reviews who look at this lens in perfect conditions if it makes you more comfortable.
A few weeks ago, I put on a charity auction for the Atlanta NAACP, Audubon Society, and Atlanta Mission- we cleaned out an abandoned restaurant that was missing some walls and a roof (lot more covid safe and not very obtrusive)- spent a few days cleaning the space and hanging things. Lots of urban wildlife, street, and a whole section covering the Black Lives Matter marches and protests. About 60 people were able to come out at different times and 31 of 50 prints sold. One of the neatest things I’ve been able to do with my photos.
That's a beautiful final shot and what a wonderful moment! Thanks for the excellent review - personally I think the 50mmf2 is now more appealing than ever!

I haven't used a lens in the f/1.0 to 2 range, so I don't know exactly how limiting f/2 may be in low light situations when compared to f/1.0, 1.2, or 1.4. (Currently using the XF 18-55)
I know fast apertures will enable fast shutter speeds to freeze movement at low light events, but are low-noise images achievable at f/2?
Using flash would just throw all this out the window, lol 😅
50mm f2 is a magical and very underrated lens.
what about low light? is the 50mm F2 good enough for taking pics of xmas lights on dark streets?
Yes. F2 is definitely good enough for those kinds of pictures.

I got to play with the 50 F1 at a Fuji event at a local camera store. It was fun. And now I don't have to lust after a lens I'll probably never be able to afford. Now one of the cheap, super fast manual focus primes? That's a bit more attainable.
Thanks for this review! It seems that most photo youtubers rave about the lens and they all seem really biased. Thaks for your honesty

Wow. Thanks for telling me that! I love that shot also.
Extremely helpful, thank you very much!
Great stuff! Have mine preordered, now I’m not as excited. Would you compare the sharpness is this to the 90mm f2 for me? How do they stack up?
Sorry :( 90mm f2 is in a different leaugue. It is in the top three sharpest FUJI lenses and I think it has the smoothest bokeh to boot.
If someone tells you they are nailing focus all the time wide open, even on a 56mm 1.2 I would have my doubts.
@@eliaspap8708 Thanks. I keep up to date, but will definitely double check.
Andrew, I have grown to trust you word as an honest reviewer. This video confirms that trust, especially considering the ravenous demand for this lens. Thanks as always.
What is that light in the top left corner? Great review, thanks
The 50mmf2 is a nice companion for it👌🏼
Michael Moerkamp yup. The 50 f2 is one of the standout lenses from Fuji. I had the 56 F1.2 - not impressed. The 50f2 is a modern wonder
Love the title! Got a notification showing "the good, the bad, and the" and in my head I thought BOKEH! And of course, another great video as always 👍
14:29 I sometimes forget that you are American... This reminded me again. Love it.
Was there a firmware update for the X-T4 so it could work better with this lens?
Yes
What are your favorite lenses for 4/3? And what do you think about the best stabilization on the market Olympus?
Not specifically this lens, but I was considering getting a fast aperture 50mm equivalent lens. I don't take many portraits and my bokeh obsession is restricted to macros. Already having the 18-55 kit lens, will I really benefit from a faster lens?
😢😂😂😂
It's been three years. I feel very differently. 😂
The term "urban decay" is more widely known. I've never heard anyone say "rural decay" but felt it was the best description of what I like to shoot.
thanks for video
Great video and make sense!
You are definition of integrity sir.
Actually all Fuji for me. :) You may be mistaking me for Omar.
@@AndrewGoodCamera I think you are right and thanks for the correction.
are you at the latest firmware on the camera? it is for improve the autofocus on the XF 50 1.0. love the review.
Wow, I don’t know what I expected, but that lens is waaay bigger than I thought it would be
It’s huge
Looks impressive, though
I want a 23 F1.0 to pair with the 50 F1.0 and I'd move back to Fujifilm
@@PixlByPixl Ah cool. It still ruined my shoot though! ;)
Hey Andrew ;) What do you think about new Fuji X-S10? Did you get one for a review?
That kid rips! You should probably tell him to keep his tounge in while jumping, I've seen some nasty accidents and for the looks of his skills, he likes to bike!
Yes, the tongue out scared me too lol
Why do you need to resell it instead of just returning it?
Don't feel that that is honest. I got value out of it. And it's not like it's broken
Did this have the latest firmware installed?
See pinned comment.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Thank you. It's always nice when revisiting reviews to know if Fuji has released updates to rectify issues.
I see what you did here with the title :-P
I think you are pretty on point.
Have you had the chance to check out the new XS10? Loved the review man
What film simulation were you using for the photos?
Provia, with some tweaks
@@AndrewGoodCamera thanks!

great colors.
Are you still editing from classic chrome?
Provia, for this series.
Thank you for this! A little disappointed in the lens as I was hoping for more from it, but never disappointed in your content.
Hey, curious if you have an ebay page or something where you sell your old camera gear? I'm sure a lot of us would be interested.
Beautiful pictures you got there :)
Thank you very much!
Been looking forward to this review. I'm in two minds about this lens. I don't shoot portraiture and the price is eye wateringly high. It's going to cost more than my X-T3.
sorry for my shallow knowlage... but what is sunny 16?
Old film term. Sunny 16 refers to the method of gauging exposure without a meter. It refers to severe clear conditions (bright sun).
@@AndrewGoodCamera ok! thank you bro! realy apiciate it! and the video as well as always

Haha. Anytime. :)
I really really love the look of your pictures. The tones and colors are great! Can you share a couple of hints to get that "Portra/pastel" yet colorful look of yours? I've been chasing that results for months in my post processing :)
It's pretty simple. No secret sauce here. Just Provia/Standard, warmed up, over-exposed and shadows brought back. :)
Thanks for the tip!
@@AndrewGoodCamera Ah I see :)
Would it detect the eyes better without the glasses on?
Of course it would.
Did you change the camera ? Looks different, way more quality
Tried out shooting with Eterna. Do you like?
@@AndrewGoodCamera yep way better
Wish you to be able to review the new Voigtlander Nokton 50mm 1.5 II in Single and Multicoated versions.
Awesome lense it is!!
This lens is made for low light, Andrew.
That's awesome lens 😍😍
At the beginning, I was worried it would go the way of your Triumph bike... By the halfway point my thoughts had changed to "nope, not like the Triumph - the way he's talking sounds strikingly like me and the Olympus Pro f1.2 lenses, or the newer Lumix bodies". On the flipside though, you won't have to give Denae puppy eyes to keep it if it doesn't mesh with what you want from the lens...
Haha. The difference was that I was very sad to see the Triumph go. :)
1:01 I'm really surprised you couldn't hear Denea yelling in the background "NO! We're returning it. You don't NEED it!"
At least, that's how this situation would go in my house. Then I would have probably kept it anyway.
"Sharpness is nothing to write home about"
It's supposed to be sharper than the 56 f1.2 at f1.0 and the 56 is sharp. So...?
I really don't enjoy getting into sharpness debates, because really, it's silly. But according to my in-depth sharpness tests, the 56 1.2 is not all that sharp on the spectrum of Fuji lenses. I haven't tested these two side by side, because I just don't care. But saying it's sharper than the 56mm 1.2 wide open isn't saying a lot.
@@AndrewGoodCamera Fair enough.
This is a helpful review, Andrew. And a good contrast to some of the hype about this lens. It’s certainly interesting, but it doesn’t appeal to me. It may be best suited for controlled studio work.
Good to hear from you Scott. And yes, I didn't realize how much hype there is for this one. Many people not liking my so-so appraisal of it.
“Toucan do it” 😁
Alex rides really well!!!
Agreed
They have sort of ...stalled .. imo,
Nothing new that is really interesting..
(btw.. did you return the Panasonic FF S1H ?
i remember you saying your were trying it out for the hybrid shooter approach..)
thanks again
cheers from Portugal
Oh man... I could do a video just on answering your questions here. My relationship with Fuji is complicated. A couple things I'll say. Like you, I was bummed by this lens release. I would have MUCH preferred an improvement to some old lenses, most especially that 35mm 1.4. And yes, we sold the S1H. It's incredible, but the X-T4 is perfectly adequate for what we need and is a lot more responsible financially :)
As for my preferred shooting, for most almost every photo and videography situation, we are completely satisfied with FUJI and will continue to use it.
@@AndrewGoodCamera hi Andrew,
Thanks very much for the reply..
I agree with you that..staying with the GFX is a nice ‘compromise’.)
Honestly, and i’ve said this before, i reckon your rural decay stuff , ;) is in deed your very personal niche.
For sure.
(And i know that you don’t like Fujifilm support either.. hehe)
Yes, it seems to being the best fit for your daily tool, both of you.
Speaking of which..
Evidently, the close distance shots are one of your favourite things...and i really appreciate them. I am under the impression you own both the 80mm macro AND the 90mm f2... Or have you only kept the 90mm..?
This is to say that... i wish u did/showed us more macro and close distance stuff. either ruralscape or not. ;)
I namely share your exact approach on the getting out of the usual 35 & 85mm focal distances...
Certainly. This was with the x-t4, and I'm sure the glasses were part of the issue here.

*Several are questioning my results of my AF testing* and asking what firmware I'm on. I am on firmware 1.10. Regarding it's poor AF performance in my video, I think it's mostly the glasses throwing things off. It certainly performs better when nothing is in between the camera and the eye. However, it's still far from perfect and portrait photographers can expect to get misses, especially in less than ideal circumstances.
Cap game is so on point tho
Considering cost and size, I think the average shooter should try the new Viltrox 56mm. You might just like it enough to skip the big Fuji 50mm.
Nice hat!
The original intent of this lens is low light B/W photography that’s the purpose of its design, not for colour work or portrait photography. Although you could force it to do these things but it’s not the right tool.
I'll be happy to sell my 56 for this. It's not a lens for everyone but I'm pretty sure it's for me.
You are wrong. It is selling for $2k now here.! All other Fuji are at maro but this one is commanding 33% premium
I have and still experienced a better performance using the Sigma EF primes via fringer pro 2 adapter. Great lens however I somewhat disappointed. Auto focus gets a c minus
The title. Well done😂
Luckily, the bokeh wasn't ugleh!
Waiting for the 70 300mm... Ps this lens is gorgeous....
You didn’t have the lens long enough to review it properly,I own it and only shoot wide open ,it’s sharp
I still have it and have continued to shoot with it. My opinion is unchanged.
A three-stop ND tames this beast when shooting outdoors.
Why not just use electronic shutter and not shoot through an extra layer of glass?
@@AndrewGoodCamera The electronic shutter messes with the bokeh, plus the extra glass protects the front element...

That WANDRD bag ain't massive you mentalist :D
Any 30 liter bag is massive on a mountain bike.
Agreed
not sure it's entirely fair to bash eyeAF performance when your subject has plastic glasses on after a day of riding bikes in the dirt...
