- This short film is a re-enactment of the critical year in Dr. Frederick Banting's life when he discovered insulin for the treatment of diabetes at the University of Toronto. It depicts the odds against which he and his assistant, Charles Best, worked; the scepticism of other doctors and the final victory that gave thousands of diabetics hope for a healthier life.

Being a Diabetic myself. I'm glad that they did these experiments. It's sad that so many dogs had to die, but look at the results. They single handily saved millions of lives.
Many diabetics were able to survive simply by eating zero carbohydrates. A zero carb diet requires no insulin.

You folks should know that this great man died while trying to save the life of the pilot from burning to death following a crash . He was just 42. A great soldier, a great surgeon , a great scientist and a great human being.
What a great story of two Canadian guys; Sir Frederick Banting and his assistant who developed insulin in Canadian at the University of Toronto. And their discovery would go on the save 100’s of millions of lives. Truly great story from the National Film Board and I wish more people new about Banting, a Canadian, who’s greater contribution to human health around the world saved millions of lives.

I lost my sister to type 1 diabetes in 2004 , she was 47 years old .Because of these 2 men she was kept alive for 36 years , she was just 11 years old when she was diagnosed . my only hope is that someday a cure will be found . Diabetes runs in my family , my children and all my nieces and nephews are healthy adults but its the next generation that I worry about . Yes , my sister did live to 47 but it wasn't much of a life . this awful disease needs to be cured . We love and miss you Debbie

NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT but The discovery of insulin was not well thought out. The administration of insulin to brittle diabetics allowed the children to live to breeding age. now 100 years later the rocket scientists can't understand why diabetes is on the rise???? (the brain surgeons shout McDonalds or Coca Cola) There are millions of diabetic gene carriers world wide now and it will only get worse as they find each other, mix their genes (DNA) and make more little baby diabetics...... Sterilization would have been the key back in the 20's forward. way too late now (see I told you it was not politically correct).

Diabetes was known in ancient times, by the Egyptians, Greeks, and others. It did not just spring into existence due to the discovery of insulin. Back then, if your idea were true, if it was genetic, no one would have lived long enough to reproduce, and the disease would not have persisted to the present day. But it did, so genetics is not the answer. Today, it is considered an autoimmune condition. For some yet unknown reason, a person's own immune cells attacks the body's own cells, in this case, the beta cells of the pancreas. So do your homework before you go and post stupid, uncaring, and racist statements on forums like this one.

I have a Type 1 Diabetes, diagnosed at age 14 on 12/12/2014
26 for me.
My sister too, age 8. She's now in her late 30's. Without the effort of these men she likely wouldn't have seen her teens. I am immensely grateful for the vision and dedication of scientists.

Nicolae Paulescu was a Romanian scientist who discovered the substance that temporarily reduce blood sugar levels,called today insulin.
Paulescu called this substance Pancreine and realized its important role in 1916, when he injected the substance into the jugular of diabetic dogs and observed that their blood sugar returned temporarily to normal levels.
But in the midst of his findings, Paulescu was called to join the armed forces of Romania.

I read the book called Breakthrough which talks about discovery of Insulin and goes into Banting and Best life story. I found it interesting that the last scientist to join, James Collip, the biochemist who purified the insulin extract, once he was able to purify the extract he wrote down the steps on a notebook and burned it. That's what started the conflict between Banting and Collip.
Collip wanted guarantee of recognition for his contribution. I just thought that was interesting.
Well Dr. McLeod who won a Nobel Prize along with Dr. Banting, shared his prize money with Dr. Collip. Dr. Banting shared his with prize money with Dr. Best. Over 50 years later, the Nobel Prize Foundation recognized that Best should have been recognized. Given he was not nominated, because he was a med student vs full doctor at the time, he received no recognition - other than the money Dr. Banting shared with him. Besides lending the lab, and providing Dr. Best and Collip to work with Dr. Banting, I never understood why Dr. McLeod won a Nobel Prize for the discovery - but that is the way it often goes with research.
I think Collip, not John James Macleod should have shared the Nobel Prize with Banting.

What they did may have saved millions and been noble, but the fact that they used dogs is hard to excuse. They killed many dogs, which are the most loving, noble animals who live to serve and befriend man and were created by mankind to be our companions and coworkers.
Why? They could have used pigs. They could have used goats. That would have been perfectly fine. But they used dogs? They may as well have used humans.
So, what animal should of they used? Or just let humans die?? What animal was readily available and overpopulated? Spaying was not done back then. Don't get me wrong, I love dogs also.... but human lives trump over a dog life. In some research, they actually used humans. That was really frowned upon and many outraged. Oh, and some countries, they eat dog. China, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico, Philippines, Polynesia, Taiwan, Vietnam, the Arctic and Antarctic eat dogs. Now that is horrendous!
Steve Packard dogs are the nearest animal to humans. And even though I love dogs, I think that he's trying to help people with diabetes. We need people the most because they have to work. He just treating them.

I was born a type 1 diabetic, and I don't want to use the word grateful, though I am grateful but in the same token I'm not I think it's absolutely shameful that after a hundred years of the formulation of insulin there is still no cure. I believe there is a cure the Pharmaceuticals won't release the Cure they would lose out on literally trillions of dollars of profit by doing so. Send me the most tragic thing about diabetes is the animal abuse and the killing of all those dogs. To me I find that horrendous and I find that shameful and you're absolutely right all dogs know how to do is love you... This sickens me
