Basically the reason why Stanley Kubrick wanted to show a black screen for three minutes is so that he can make the audience expect something. Then the trumpets blow and the titles show.

I also feel like it may have represented something more. Considering the Monoliths that appeared in the films only did so when something evolutionary had occurred, I like to think that the first minutes of black shows before the universe was created. There was nothing. Then all of a sudden the universe arises and so does the Monolith.

Major releases were done in large and opulent theaters which had stage curtains. An overture was played with the curtain closed. As the movie began, the curtain opened to reveal the screen. There was also an intermission with music. The intermission for 2001 took place right after Frank & Dave have their conversation in the pod about disconnecting Hal.

There were some pretty strick rules about opening titles back then. I that Francis Ford Coppola was kicked out of the directors guild for a while because he omitted opening titles from "Apocalypse Now!" And I think it was "It's a Wonderful Life" and maybe some other movies that slipped into public domain at some point because they did not run the copyright declaration in the titles.

I try to look through and I thought wtf man don’t tell me I got a fucked up copy haha. But yea man I’m wayyy to baked to even try to fix it and so here I am now realizing like a idiot that it’s supposed to be that and not a glitch lmfaooooo. Anyways man this movie is great.

No amount of video essay cant convince me that 3 minutes of black screen are necessary, you can achieve the same effect with 45 seconds, 1 minute max

The 3 minute sequence of a black screen with the stargate music isn't in the HBO Max version.

I love how it is three minutes of blackness and an eerie humming, just to get the audience in the right mindset.

Oh the score at the beginning… absolutely haunting…
That piece was also used extensively in A Warning to the Curious as one of many audio cues used to let you know that the spectre was near, and it’s utterly terrifying.

This opening with the black screen I believe is an introduction to the central problem that the film addresses and hopes the audience will learn how to overcome.
    Simply put: Nihilism
The NIHILISM that resulted from the cultural shift of the French Revolution and the rise of the ideas of the enlightenment era. The rejection of God.
The music here is meant to inspire awe. The level of awe that one would experience in the presence of God .. the creator of space + the entire Universe as we know it.
