  • A Review/video essay going into why The Mandalorian season 3 feels hollow. Overall a major step down from season 2 and somehow even Grogu/Baby Yoda feels artificial now. This video will also be covering the first 5 episodes.

I will never forgive The Book of Boba Fett for wrapping up two of The Mandalorian's major story threads left at the end of season 2. It left this season barely anything to work with character-wise.

I found it insane that Mando’s arc of being accepted back into the tribe was concluded within three episodes. The entire season could’ve focused on how Mando desperately wants to reclaim his glory as a Mandalorian, which could greatly contrast with Bo Katan who disagrees with Mando’s beliefs as a Mandalorian. Bringing back Grogru was such a waste of time too. Besides the flashback in order 66, there has been almost nothing for him to do. I like the idea of him becoming a foundling, but Disney is afraid to age him up past a baby so there’s a huge limit of what you can do with him.

yeah pretty much, I think it is just more disappointing, because many of us saw this series as a true revival of Star Wars instead of those garbage sequels and spin off movies that we got instead. the first season of this show was so good, even the 2nd season had some good moments. but I never watched Book of Boba Fett, I had to find out that they showed mando and grogu on this other spin off show for some reason. Then the 3rd season came out, and it seems like they are REALLY dragging out as much as possible, and I don't think they really know what direction they want to head, which eventually result in the show being bad either way

That would be stupid look at the bigger picture, we get to see more about mandolorian culture and see them come together and who will lead mandalore what is their fate that’s the point of the MANDELORIAN. it’s sad how simple minded you and the creator are being not seeing the series come full circle. Now I do think it’s bull that he gave the dark saber up but I’m sure he’ll get it back. Yes you need to watch all the Disney plus shows theirs literally only two not including obi wan that are moving forward the post empire but before Rey arc. Their trying to be like the mcu, and stories always have been connected.

Basically the natural ending would have been Din going through one last journey and then reuniting with Grogu.

Andor has really broken Mandalorian for me. This season of Mandalorian just feels so shallow and uninspired, there is so little character development and a lack of interesting storylines. Everything also feels sooo rushed and superficial. The side characters are basically nothing more than glorified extras and one of my significant issues is the look.
Their reliance on The Volume/ILM Stagecraft is just breaking this show's look. Everything feels cartoon and fake.
Grogu, no matter how cute he is, is also a major negative for me. Him still being around is clearly just to sell merch.
Andor's usage of real locations and big sets makes it feel much more tangible and seemingly real. Ferrix is an amazing example in my mind. They have created a pretty rich background story, customs, and rituals through their environmental storytelling.
In Andor there is also a red thread that goes through every episode, most characters are interesting and have their own goals and stories that should be told. The action feels impactful because it's used sparingly so when you get an action scene it hits like a truck.

The oddest part to me is that they're seemingly portraying Din's clan as good guys? When this season startes I WAS SURE that his arc this season would be learning that his clan is a cult with stupid rules and he doesn't need to follow them to live a fulfilling life or to have a purpose. But for some reason he's more committed than ever and shows no signs of leaving them, and the Armorer is portrayed as this moral, wise person as opposed to the controlling, irritating character she is.

Agreed, the character arcs were complete, the story goal was complete. To continue the series would really be starting a new story from scratch, which mean if you want to use the same characters, they need brand new arcs and brand new story goals that don’t repeat/regress into being identical to what was already covered in the past seasons. What season 3 feels like is they’re meandering at the end of a finished story and not properly starting a new one. Sequels/new arcs need to justify their existence and so far there’s just no justification to continue following these characters if the writers aren’t going to do anything meaningful with them.

1: Luke should’ve let Grogu visit Mando, cuz he should know after everything with Vader that the lack of connection is what led Vader down the path of the Darkside. This adventure in season 3 would be a “summer vacation” type thing for Grogu as Luke would feel that strengthening his bond would give him more motivation. This way it wouldn’t undo the first 2 seasons while we get to see Grogu more

Grogu never should have returned unless it was about a plot down the line of the war where Bo Katann perhaps launches an attack on Luke’s new Jedi temple to kidnap Grogu to force Mando into defeat, or if Moff Gideon somehow returned.

The thing I find baffling about this season is how they could have made it work by simply moving Din’s redemption to the end of the season. By doing that, it would make the few actions he does for the Mandalorian Covert, like saving Pav Vizla’s son, giving his land on Nevaro to the covert, and trying to reunite some of the Mandalorians, have much more weight to them since they are noble acts in tribute to his people. It wouldn’t feel like the writers were just wasting time, and give the writers an opportunity to truly build upon Mandalorian culture through questioning whether or not bathing in the living waters is really necessary. They could also use that opportunity to explore the other Mandalorian characters by having them express their interpretations of Din’s attempts at redemption. Bo Katan’s underbaked arc could also be fixed because her primary goal is to reunite as retake Mandalore, so assisting Din would benefit her directly. Honestly, what the heck were the writers on to not use this?

You are BRILLIANT ❤ because EVERY single POINT you made is astoundingly accurate and amazingly astute!!
You should be a script editor on the show because you highlighted everything that was paramount to making this season the success that it's been in the past two.
They really dropped the ball, and the season was far too short, especially on episodes that counted. Too long for ones that didn't.

You hit the nail on the head with this. Your thoughts 100% match my own in this video, and it's clear this is higher-ups in the studio meddling with a show thar had been their gold standard. Don't fix what ain't broke, Baby Yoda (I refuse to use that awful other name more suitable for a Gamorrean) is going to overplay his presence and lose his appeal. They should have done this season without him until, at the very least, the final episode.

  • @lorescriptor

Great video! Watching season 3 I felt something was off and you perfectly summed up all the problems of this season. Lack of direction and lacklustre pacing, pointless episodes (I chuckled when you expressed hope that the show will pick up the pace after episode 5, can't wait for your comments on the droids episode xD), Nevarro (why the heck this town doesn't have any defences whatsoever, it's stupid). Grogu feels out of place - he's cute, but him being cute is getting boring, and imo he should have just stayed with Luke, this would be such a bitter-sweet but fitting ending for season 2. But then he just got back immediately, mitigating the emotional impact of season 2 ending. And how they handled this reunion? It happened in a spin-off show... And the writers clearly don't know what to do with him now. Like, are we supposed to take him becoming a Mandalorian warrior seriously?
But the biggest problem in my opinion is Din. As you said, he doesn't have a character arc anymore, only a quest to get redeemed. And it's frustrating cause the opportunity was right there! Make this quest longer but more impactful. Make Mando question the creed and what it means to be a Mandalorian. Make him realize that he doesn't need to follow old dogma to be one, that the Armorer's way is not the only way. Maybe then he would be able to wield the Darksaber, as he wouldn't be conflicted anymore. Then he could become the one to unite the tribes, the bridge between the old and the new. Instead, Mando is just there, and at some point, he's starting to feel like a secondary character in his own show.

I understand why some fans are feeling let down, Din is getting less time, Grogu coming back so soon and in a different show. But personally I am loving the focus on Bo Katan and hoping for more rebels connections like Ezra, Sabine, and Thrawn. Obviously we've been hearing that some of these characters are or may be in Ahsoka. Also interested to see what the remaining imperials and Gideon are up to and finding out more about how Gideon got the Darksaber and what happened to Kelleran

Why are so many people not actually holding Jon Favreau responsible? He let himself be credited and took all the money to make a mediocre season of TV. He was paid millions.
I don't care what happened behind the scenes, working with the execs is normal for show writers, even if you don't agree, you can still compromise, or...make a plan for the series and have it pre-approved by the executives before starting?

I have found this season to be very underwhelming and uninteresting so far. While I liked the story arc of Mando going to Mandalore and trying to be accepted back into his tribe (which unfortunately only lasted three episodes), I’ve found the other storylines (the mission to rescue a foundling, the space pirates, Grogu training to be a foundling, Bo Katan becoming the leader of all Mandalorians, all of the mysterious stuff going on with some of the former imperials, etc) to be a bit boring.
Also, I don’t like that Grogu is back. It just undermines the finale of season 2. I think that he should’ve stayed with Luke and this season should’ve ONLY been about Mando trying to be “redeemed” and along the way maybe trying to figure out who he wants to be, with the season finale also being the SERIES finale.

I've enjoyed this season of Mandalorian for what it is, but it's definitely no where near the quality of the past two seasons. It's similar to Obi Wan in terms of having a bunch of random stuff that does little for the overall plot. To be honest bad batch season 2 has been better than the concurrent Mandalorian episodes.

something that wasn't mentioned is how the children of the watch are viewed as good people, they aren't though, they're an extremist cult and bo-katan knew this
not even characters like pre viszla followed "the creed" and maybe mandalore being demolished made its survivors become desperate but still bo-katan saw a lot of things in her life, she wouldn't join it
i feel it'd be better if din brought the mandalore water back to the armorer only for the armorer to say it isnt actual water from the mines because its just water, not magical like they think and that'd cause Din to finally learn the truth and leave the clan for good

I like Bo Katan becoming more prominent but they should be doing more with Din. They should be an interesting duo and they have good chemistry but both characters are undeveloped. Also I don't have an issue with Bo saving Din once in a while. Din isn't perfect and has made a ton of mistakes in the past.

I thought with the order 66 flashback Grogu was going to meet Yoda that would have been interesting, what a missed opportunity.
This whole third series of Mando feels like John Favreau doesn't know what to do next, the main story of Grogu becoming a jedi is finished, now you can honestly kill off Grogu and nothing would change. It's like he is writing all these filler episodes until he comes up with a new story.

  • @Ethan-cz8xq

I also found the season hollow, but also for another reason you didn't mention. In the first half of the season, the majority of the fight scenes come out of nowhere, with little to no buildup and often with a jarring transition. So I had very little investment in them and was left wondering "OK, why do I care? It's just another random encounter to fill up screen time." Maybe if they had done their homework and put more energy into the non-fight scenes, those fights would have seemed more meaningful.
