Currently researching my first gold nib, I've probably watched this video 10 times. Thanks yoseka for all the hard work you've put into this one. Love these deep dives and reviews!
I have no idea why I watched an hour long video about nibs I probably have little chance of getting. But I really appreciate the level of detail you provide and the effort behind it. Great job, thanks.
Loved the detailed review on the custom 74 various nib options available globally. This really helped me decide which nib to go for honestly. I loved the SF nib.
Very well done! I love the way you set each nib in a way to easily compare with the previous and next. Teaching us what the digits mean, along with the sizes (5, 10, 15), was both enjoyable and super helpful. You have my sincere thanks.
They way you have explained the coding system and the writing, the lines, its an awesome content and you have spoken and explained so well, all kind of confusions will be clear with most of the people. I own SM Nib Custom 74 since more than 18 months and use it often.
Really thank to you. It will be my first golden pen and you showed everything about custom 74. Know that it is the best video and you are helping a lot of people. Thanks again.
Now I know what those numbers denote. Thank you for the info & details! I have a couple of 74s & a 743 in different nib sizes & all of them are smooth writers, especially the 743. Very detailed line variations. Keep up the good work & thank u again !
you're delightful. this video helped me buy a 742 soft fine and it's really fine :). I can't imagine how ef feels like. this one is quite smooth but i'm comparing it to a medium pelikan... thank you for your time and explanation :) love the cheerful commentary
This is a great comparison of nibs. I have a suggestion you may find helpful. When I fix and tune nibs I measure the line width I draw on paper directly with a good quality calliper and a 11x loupe. I can measure the line width consistently to within 0.02 mm precision. Using this method you don’t have to rely on guessing and using a rough visual comparison with these liners. You could simply tell your viewers : (for example) This nib creates a line 0.64 mm wide on the upstroke and 0.86mm on the horizontal. I love your videos, the prep you put in is amazing.
I bought a Custom 743 in medium before I discovered your comparisons. I love it, but I was really surprised at how broad the line is. It is actually thicker than my Kaweco Sport medium nib. It's okay because I want a broader lined smooth nib in my pen case. Thank you for all of your fantastic videos! The Sailor nib comparison is also really great and helped me arrive at my decision to get a medium-fine in Sailor.
this is by far the most watched review that i can assure you. always come back to this whenever i am about to buy a pilot gold nib pen and in need of nib comparisons.
Wow! I am just starting my fp journey and learning about nib sizes. I am most familiar with gel pen tip sizing and this video was so helpful in my understanding of which nib will work best for me. 🙌🏼
That is very helpful, especially when you compare the line thickness with similar pen, to have the nib width in mm. That’s the most helpful thing personally and it’s the first time i’ve seen it in a review. Keep it up!
Thank you for the clear and elaborate comparison - couldn’t find any other videos where the Pilot nibs are so clearly compared. I was going to be buying sight unseen, and the Fine Medium looks just perfect.
Eversince I learned and loved parker branding and got it from my dad, I fell into the fountain pen rabbit hole lol and brought me here. And now I’m into pilot fp’s. Thanks for this detailed and very informative video of line comparison for various nib sizes. It’s or up to for me. Thank you ladies
Thank you so much for doing this comparison video. I am researching a gold nib pen for my wife's birthday. I think the soft fine medium will be great choice.
Thanks to your video I finally understand my Custom 74 MS pen. I bought it while I was in Japan without knowing exactly what I bought, lol. My Japanese isn't good, but I could understand that it was rare and it did have a variation in its line width. I love the variation, but was always frustrated that I could not write as fast as my other fountain pens (ink would not flow as fast after continuous use), which made me think that it was somewhat defective. Now, I know it is not. It was made for music and the double slit in the nib was to draw out more ink. Thank you!
Great video. It answered a lot of my questions about Pilot nibs. Pilot makes my favorite gold nib pens. I only wish the Soft Fine and Fine Medium were available here in the US.
If you still haven't purchased one, ebay and Amazon have carried pens with these nib sizes, I see them frequently as I am currently shopping for my own Custom 74.
Hi, great video on the PC 74 lineup. Whoa, very nice demo with all the nib sizes, well done. I'm a fan of Pilot Custom's line, and though I sure don't have many, the PC pens I do have, I like. Glad to get a chance to look through your store, and look forward to watching your videos. 😃

Thank you so much for making this video! I've been considering getting a Pilot Custom 74, and this is so helpful! I was thinking about getting a fine, but after watching this, I think the medium will be more what I like!
Thank you very much for the very informative video 😊 I am thinking of buying either a soft fine medium or soft medium, which one is the smoother writer?
I am using the Pilot Custom 823 as the base for my fountain pens and purchase/sell Pilot Custom 743 with the nib options I want in those pens. So far I have the standard medium (bernstein), a falcon nib (demonstrator) and a soft medium (smoke). The soft medium is about to be switched out for a soft fine medium and then the collection is perfect 👍🏻 I wish Pilot would make another 823 so I can expand my collection ( how about a silver version of the demonstrator 👀). Thanks for posting your videos, they are excellent and spot on with regards to interesting topics.
Thanks for the comparison, I think the most complete. But you should put the results in a separate file, for easier reference in order to evaluate to evaluate all the nib size in a single glance.
Hi Bernardo! thank you for watching and commenting! The Custom 823 line widths are pretty similar but it's a softer and bouncier nib so the stroke is more wet and you can get a wider line too.
Perhaps I should have gotten the medium in the 74. I have several Pilot pens, and my fine nib 74 is the one I use the least. It works ok, I like the way the pen looks and feels, and I’ve never had any problems with it….it just isn’t all that exciting to use. It’s not very smooth, compared to the fine Custom 823, or even the Decimos I have (just got the violet Decimo this week in medium from your shop…looooove it!). I wonder if you can purchase nibs separately for the 74? The medium would probably suit me better.
Thanks for this helpful video! How bouncy are the Pilot #5 Soft nibs compared to steel Jowo #5 nibs (such as found on some smaller OPUS 88 and Esterbrook models)? Thanks!
His indeed is a great explaination. As far the third digit of the name, I was told that the third number denotes the market value in which the pen is to be sold like custom 823 the 3 would denote it be sold for 30,000 yen; 2 20,000 and so on. The third number to identify the nib size is really interesting.
can you explain what the numbering on CH 845 pen? It has the same size 15 pilot nib, although it is 18k gold, rather than 14k. Thank you for your wonderful video.
Thank you! Music nibs have more of a rounded tipping and stub nibs are completely flat, but they produce a similar writing experience overall so they are compared to each other a lot!
Thanks for the explanation. However the last digit of the 3 digit customs pen reflects the price and not the size of the nib. 912 and 742 are 20000yen price. 745 and 823 are the 30000 yen price and the 845 is the 50000 yen price.
I have a Pilot Custom 74 but I decided to try a Medium Fine rather than my usual Medium. I hate the way it writes! It just doesn’t glide or flow at all, but drags just enough that it inhibits my ability to form a readable cursive character. I am wondering if this is normal for a medium fine nib or I just happened to get a pen that could use a little tuning. And how do I tell what I’ve got? Also, my pen came with a cartridge and not a converter. Can I use the CON-70 converter in it?
I'm debating between the soft medium and the medium nibs bc I like the idea of the soft medium but I am a little heavier handed so I'm worried I would ruin a soft medium nib that way. I haven't ruined any of my steel or other gold nibs as I am careful not to apply pressure but everyone makes it sound like the soft nibs are very touchy and the slightest pressure might ruin them and that worries me 😅. Does anyone have any advice about what would be best for me? I used to have a heavier hand before using fountain pens and I've certainly lightened up the pressure I use significantly, so is this something I could learn with this pen? I couldn't afford to replace it if it got ruined which is why I'm asking. I'm leaning more towards a regular old medium for this reason even tho I like the bouncy nib and the line variation seen and described for the soft. Unfortunately there is not a place anywhere remotely near me where I could test these pens out, so that isn't an option for me and I would have to travel long distance for a pen show too, so also not an option.
74 is the entry level gold nib selling at 10,000 Yen, the 742 sells for 20,000 Yen and the 743 sells for 30,000. That's where the numbers come from. But you are right about the nibs getting bigger and the pens longer and bigger in diameter.
I believe the last number doesn't designate what nib size it is. But rather the recommended retail price in Japanese Yen (in ¥10,000) at the time of introduction. I know for a fact that the pilot custom 845 and the 823 have the same nib size (a #15) and obviously they have a different last digit.
Ah! I now wish I had got the demo 74, I got the black one because it was the closest to the solid black/gold which is unfortunately, not sold in the US. I love watching the ink slosh around the pen all of a sudden months ago.
Your comparison helped me understand the difference between the nibs much better, not only visually but also in a tactile sense, through your description of the feedback from the nib as you write. Many thanks! I wonder how the Pilot SF compares to the 21k MF nib of the Sailor Amaoto series that you introduced recently.
I discovered your channel/store by chance, watching an ink review here on TH-cam. I cannot remember whose video it was, but they were showing different ink samples, making swatches. I just had to look up your store, because the sample bottles were so darn cute! I want to thank you for putting all that time and effort into making this outstanding video, which definitely helped me decide on which nib to get. You've got yourself a new subscriber. I feel kinda guilty for not buying my next Pilot from your store, but the EU makes it nearly impossible for us to purchase anything outside its borders anymore, unless you're willing to spend twice as much on the same pen. Madness. However, if and when I make it to New York again, I am definitely paying your store a visit! And if you ever want to open a franchise store in Belgium, let me know. ;)
Love your videos! They've been so helpful in picking out pens that are more of an investment than an impulse purchase. Would you consider doing one of these for the Pilot custom 823?
Thank you so much for this. This was extremely helpful. I got my hands a Custom 92 with a nib, I love it! However I was not able to find information on the nib and now I know why, it was asia only.
This video was extremely helpful ! Thanks for the demos. I love fine medium or soft fine medium. If only you could have added the waverly and Falcon nibs.
If you've written with a Platinum C nib on a Rhodia notebook and had no issue, the Pilot BB should be fine! The Platinum C is the juiciest and makes the thickest lines.
Great video. Sound improved as the video went on. I am old and hard of hearing, having a hard time understanding language behind the masks….turned on the captions.

Hi there , Could you Please please make a Comparison on 742 nib size? Thankss :)
And if you ever want to open a franchise store in Belgium, let me know. ;)
The 2 after the 74 also stands for a price in the 20.000 Japanese yen, the 3 for a price in the 30.000 yen.
Love your videos! They've been so helpful in picking out pens that are more of an investment than an impulse purchase.
Would you consider doing one of these for the Pilot custom 823?
For sure, it's on our list of videos we want to make!
@@Yoseka thank you so much for the reply ☺
Can’t wait to see that video!!!
Hi.. The medium nib of custom 74 vs platinum medium and fine nibs.. Which is better..
Thank you so much for this. This was extremely helpful. I got my hands a Custom 92 with a nib, I love it! However I was not able to find information on the nib and now I know why, it was asia only.
Love the Pilot FM nibs. They are so perfect! Glad you are loving yours too. They should make them more widely available on different Pilot pens here!
@@Yoseka Have you noticed any difference in smoothness between the M and FM nibs ? I don't know which one to choose.
This video was extremely helpful ! Thanks for the demos. I love fine medium or soft fine medium. If only you could have added the waverly and Falcon nibs.
Excellent! Than you 🙏
I wanna ask that which one is the finer between safari ef and custum 74 f nibs?
Definitely the Custom 74 F!
have you tried a BB on a Rhodia/Clairefontaine Notebook, I love the Platinum C nib and afraid to purchase a BB ? Help :-)
If you've written with a Platinum C nib on a Rhodia notebook and had no issue, the Pilot BB should be fine! The Platinum C is the juiciest and makes the thickest lines.
that soft fine oh my
What about a post nib? Is that more fine than extra fine?
It would be even finer, yes!
Great video. Sound improved as the video went on. I am old and hard of hearing, having a hard time understanding language behind the masks….turned on the captions.
