- This practice is a variation on metta practice that focuses on receiving kindness and love, exploring the phrase "May I be held in loving presence" (a phrase I learned from Tara Brach). First you will ground yourself and connect with the body space, tuning into the whole body field and doing your best to relate to it with kindness. Repeating the phrase, you will then be guided to bring different kinds of being held into your experience, from being held by grandparents, a loved one, to the loving presence of the Buddha or Jesus Christ, or visualising Quan Yin or Avalokiteshvara (the Bodhisattva of compassion). Finally you will open to sense of awareness that is spacious and welcoming and that also radiates with a sense of love.
Love is a gift. We may know the experience of love but find it hard to articulate. Can it be reduced to a certain sensation, or thought, or quality of mind, or emotion? I believe that it goes far beyond this. Love is part of our deepest nature. It emanates from nothingness, is felt in the relationship between things, is held in gaps of space and time, transmitted through gestures and through silence. It is both created and discovered. It is our ground of being and also the flame we gently coax to burn brighter. Our job is to receive this love with grace, and to offer this gift of love in whatever ways we are able.
