I have a Troybilt Tomahawk 8HP chipper shredder that I bought new in 1988 that is still in operation. Of course I've had to buy new chipper knives, flails, and belts over time but I still use if frequently in my wooded suburban home lot. The last few belts I've bought have been the Kevlar version. My Tomahawk model drops the chips directly below the screen and doesn't have the side discharge chute as the one in the video. As the pile of chips grows taller, I have to continue to move the chipper over a couple of feet. It's a shame that Garden Way, the Troybilt Tomahawk manufacturer, went bankrupt and no longer makes the Tomahawk chipper.

I agree, this is a great machine. If taken care of and the belt is engaged properly (slowly) it will last a long time.

I picked up a similar machine in used condition. I was pleasantly surprised how well it worked. I was able to chip or shred quite a bit of branches on pne tank of gas.

Once you get in the rhythm with how hard to push in the brush it works really well. I did have to replace one belt though. Maybe pick one up as a spare. Thanks for watching!

@@EnoRestoration The belt that came with it was a "close but not quite" and the machine really underperformed to be polite. A lunchtime web search found the parts manual. A lunchtime trip to an industrial belting supplier the following day and I was able to get the proper belt.
It was a night and day difference in how the machine performed.
The belt wasn't that expensive, you are correct I should have got a spare. I did write the part number of the belt on the machine with Sharpie.
I still hope to come across the tamper and the different sized screens for it too. It still worked great with the screen that came with it. I think it is the 3/4" screen.

Troy-Bilt also made a tamper with a narrower profile. The one you used in the video is a blunt-shaped tamper.

I have a 1989 model Super Tomahawk. I purchased new . Did you install the electric start?
Machine still runs great after 35 years.

That’s great to hear! Have you ever had to sharpen the blades? Mine came with the electric start.

I just picked one of these up. 8hp B&S motor, electric start. Yesterday I powered through a 10x3 foot pile of pine bark. Wow! It is an amazing machine but cutter blade is dull and hammers worn.
There are lots of videos and web pages on changing/sharpening the cutter blade but nothing on flail hammers. From the manual it looks involved. One of the hammers is stuck on mine and it doesn’t swing on the pin and the spacer is deformed.

I’ve yet to pull mine apart. Working well so far. I do recommend the belt I have in the description, works amazingly well. Good luck!!
