- This was the performance that won the Swedish Air Force pilot and plane the King Hussein Memorial Sword for best overall flying demonstration at the air show.
A quick turn at high speed requires enormous 'lift' forces from the wings (ie perpendicular to the wings), and this causes the amazing condensation clouds and vortices over them.
The JAS-39C is significantly lighter than most of its type, which is a big advantage when changing direction rapidly.

Every AirForces are choosing the most skilled and talented pilots to represent them, it's only a story of machines differences after. Both the Gripen and the Rafale, are very maneuverable aircrafts, very nimble and agile, thanks to their unstable Delta wings configuration, with canards.

I had a 1978 SAAB 99 Turbo and by far most enjoyable car I ever owned to this day.
Shiraz I had a 1985 Saab 900 turbo sedan in the 90's. I loved that car, the best most versatile, exciting car I have ever owned. I still look at them on TH-cam and for sale, one day I will get another and keep it!

Unfortunately never owned any classic Saab's but I own the fastest production Saab ever produced, the 93 Turbo-X. Great cars sorely missed.... 👍

Pretty awesome seeing the little micro-actuations in the canards from 0:40-1:10. Really shows how much work the flight control system is doing to keep the jet stable.

@@davidelliott5843 Not really developed for stealth, no special coating, but has effective radar jammers and a bunch of other interesting counter attack stuff for air-to-air combat. It's also quite small and very light so RCS is about 0.1m2, so comparable to a few other planes that fall into the "stealth" cathegory. Actually pretty damn impressive machines.

@@angrmgmt I'm a South African and have watched our Gripen at various airshow and can confirm that it's tiny. It goes out of visual range very quickly as soon as it climbs

So long as the camera is not hand-held, the built-in software does all the stabilization needed to produce such a high quality video.

Gripen är fortfarande svenskt, och det är Saab som har intergrerat alla komponenter, oavsett om bränsletankarna är Franska, eller om motorn är Amerikansk, eller om kannonen är Tysk.
Om vi här i Sverige hade påbörjat ett stort projekt för att kunna göra egna jetmotorer så hade det bara kostat massa onödiga pengar när man istället kan ta en motor ifrån USA.
Samma sak gäller för resten av grejorna.

Make it right at the first time and you will get a super combat aircraft. I am very astonished by the front added wings that make is so maneuverability. All super combat aircraft should adopt this feature in a close proximity dogfight and missile avoiding!
The royal Swedish air force was during the cold war one of largest and maybe the best trained airforce in the world.The pilots was world class.And Tunnan,Lansen,Draken,Viggen were their planes.

They are still among the best trained. They will push an aircraft like a Gripen to its limits and in all likelihood would be able to hold off Sukhois until NATO partners arrive with heavy air superiority fighters like F-22, Eurofighter, Rafale, etc.

That's not exactly true according to the facts.
The Saab gripen is made with more than 60% of parts from other NATO countries, so their own fighter jet is kinda big words.
At the moment we're talking, there are only 3 countries capable to built a fighter jet from A to Z, it's America, Russia and France.
Sweden knew how to do it before, but not anymore.
I like the concept of the Gripen, legacy from the Viggen, ,able to operate from non fixed air field ..
Saab,was always the pride of swedish technology,I wish they could come back to automotive production.

I had a couple of Saab 96's in my youth, they handled great also; they were unique.
I was there and saw it live, yet I get a new appreciation for it when seeing it up close like this

Well... I know that this unstable fighter has much lower induced drag than the rest.
Which you also can see when Gripen keeps it´s speed in the turns.
All other looks like they brake heavily at each turn, even while maxing two engines with after burners.
Gripen is simply ahead of all the others, in almost every aspect.

Gripen is an excellent all-purpose solution fighter. To say that it is ahead of all the others is to exaggerate. Gripen does a lot of jobs very well. Perhaps one of the most well rounded fighters on the planet, price tag and running costs included. But there are a lot of other fighters that perform specific roles better. Far better. So it really comes down to how much cash you want to plunk down on developing, building and operating stuff. Keeping a lot of specialized equipment also has it's downsides, cost notwithstanding.
@@fexilsehn6445 : By fiat, if you're doing 50 AoA it means you're a porker or doing stuff at low speed. Either way, wing loading is way to high and you're not generating enough lift. 50 AoA is probably way past the critical stall for any wing. Technically AoA on input only happens when wings cannot generate enough lift to push the aircraft into desired direction fast enough. If a aircraft maintains all energy in a turn by wings only, it won't create alpha. Maintaining control in a high AoA situation, for example when deliberately bleeding energy is another matter altogether. There the F-22 excels, whereas the Gripen does not. High AoA is not impressive in turns. It's the other way around. It's like saying that sliding sideways on a racetrack is faster the bigger angle you've got. The F-22 makes up for a lot of things with big ass engines. Having a lot of power means you can compensate on lost energy.

Finland is testing new fighters to replace F/A 18 Hornets. I hope we buy from our neighbour: Jas Gripen E.

World smallest, effective, agility and 12 ton lift limit, cheapest fight per hour cost and easy to manufactor and repair... Lowest thrust off jets, but it dosent mater when this small missile have weight reduction so still it Is fastest on real life performance, but not in paper

Apart from the impressive flying, notice how close to the ground... One mistake and... This is truly impressive.
Our Air Force might not be big but it’s definitely quality especially the pilots.
Thankfully the ejector seats are designed as to work even if you were to literally stand on the ground with the plane.

A pilot said it can roll 1 full swing in 1.2 seconds, that's pretty insane.

I have owned SAAB automobiles for many years, SAAB built its original cars in the Fifty’s directly inspired by its aircraft manufacturing tradition to be rugged and functional and I believe on the same assembly facility. SAAB built advanced but unflashy cars but unfortunately for market reasons SAAB auto came under control of GM and was shut down in GM’s bankruptcy. Still I and many other SAAB owners still love them.
I'm sure you knew, but SAAB defence and security is not the same company as the one who made the cars.

The canard wing design have clear advantages because it eliminates the more or less negative lift of a tailplane design. A canard design is much more aerodynamically efficient and the biggest advantage is the instant response of a positive pitch input giving immediate nose up moment by lift from the canard. Relaxed (but artificial) stability gives this effect, so this design is much more agile.
A tailplane design must first introduce a downforce, then as a reaction it's main wing gets an angle of attack increase for more lift. That's not so efficient, regarding both response and drag.

I love the SAAB Gripen. It is a relatively low cost, nimble, advanced fighter. I don't know if it's the fastest turning fighter, but a thrust vectoring canard design is very hard to beat. Pilot training and experience would be a huge factor. Only a head to head maneuvering competition would answer the question.

Most impressive? The 2:40 mark, when pilot makes and holds for several seconds quarter barrel rolls while holding steady forward course.
Well, rolling maneuver actually self stabilizes the heading by the law of physics. Even WWII fighters can do the same thing......
It's a classic in displays with any jets, but it lacks some very complex move like excentric barrel ;)

SAAB has always made the most of the delta wing design. Probably the best option for the Finnish Air Force and SAAB says they will build Gripens in Canada if they win the contract.

Stunning aircraft
You can see every moveable part of the aircraft constantly moving. This is because it’s designed to be unstable. It relies on some heavy technology and data to constantly adjust or else it would just spin out. This is why the early models in the 90s lost all ability to steer and crashed. Twice. Simply because the systems failed. Of course it has not crashed for more than a decade now.

If talking about spares supplies in war time gripen supplier face more challenges than indian Tejas due to its distributed supply chain.
Today indian Tejas plateform offers complete solution for small airforce like Finland at low cost . Tejas has lead I. Trainer , twin seat trainer , 4mt payload , 6.5mt pay load variants . No other plateform in the world today offers such a high degree of options from lead in fighter trainer version which can be used for offensive company role to fully grown 4.5plus gen extremely stealthy with onboard oxygen generator , hot refueling , inflight refueling and option of integrating low cost indian, Israeli, european and american weapons on it. This gives tejas unique edge over all its competitors as enemy will keep on guessing and preparing strategies for countering tejas.

It may not be the fastest turning fighter jet in the world, but it sure is amongst the fastest turning ones without thrust vectoring.
Mega-bang for the buck, with AESA radar, AIM-120 capable, and LINK-16+enhancements, so don't underestimate this little aircraft.
Just like saying P-51 is the fastest fighter without jet engine, but it met Me-262....
P.s. As i remember, some countries start developing or equipping VTC on their medium fighters.
@@joelau2383 - The usual oversimplified comment I've come to expect by now.
#1 - My comment refers to the video title, so my whole point was to contribute something to answering the question it poses.
#2 - The Me 262's engines were a completely new technology at the time, thrust vectoring is an improvement to existing technology.
#3 - In real life, everything has Pros and Cons and that goes for thrust vectoring too: it means superiority in virtually nothing else than close air combat, which today happens rather rarely. On the downside it means higher cost in acquisition as well as in maintenance, more parts to go wrong and it adds weight. So, if it's not world domination you're after, your defence budget will probably be a lot smaller than that of the US and that'll make you think about how to best invest your money.
...oh, and #4: The Nazis lost the war despite the Me 262.

Probably the tightest *sustained* turn but not the shortest !
With thrust vectoring you can compensate the turn, but you also lose a lot of speed and Energy..
@@ericlalander207 It also only works if your engine has more thrust than the plane weighs and the turbulent air coming into the jet's intake don't cause a compressor stall.
Sure there are other planes that could made a shorter turn, but they have very low speed when they exit the turn witch makes them a sitting duck in a combat situation. Maintaining speed is way more important. And the Gripen does both.

The Gripen pulls much sharper and faster turns than the Rafale & Typhoon from what I've seen at RIAT over the years.

So graphs alone don't prove anything. In a dogfight between a Gripen and Su-35 I wouldn't want to place any bets on the winner. The Sukhoi has the upper hand on turn rate but the Gripen has greatly superior avionics and weapon systems. I think in a fight between any set of 4th gen aircraft, the pilots skills will make a much bigger difference than the capabilities of the aircraft.

SAAB was co-founded by Ernst Heinkel as a means to avoid restrictions place on Germany after WW1 regarding the building of military aircraft. After Hitler took over and declared he was going to ignore the restrictions, Heinkel moved back to Germany, selling his interest in the company that became SAAB.
The Gripen is currently the best fighter in the world considering strategy, starting with the price of the flight hour, maintaining a fighter that is not so far behind the F-35 and that for the value of an F-35 3 Gripen is placed in the air , the F-22 is very expensive, the F-35 also taking into account that there are many defects in the F-35

It looks so easy and effort less with a small aircraft and no use of brute force.
Those onboard computers have to do their job to stop the aircraft from turning so fast it would kill the pilot.
Would be amazing to see how it would fly if it was flown as an UAV with no pilot restricting its capabilities to turn and take positive and negative G-forces.

Sukhoi Flanker is not the most maneuverable today. It was 15 years ago SU35 is slow and too heavy. It's demo to day in Moscow was nothing to surprise me. Just an average jet among others. Maneuvering and tactical skills mean a lot today.

Very few people know the extreme g force that acts in pilots in these high speed turns.
Actually, their speed in air show is pretty slow for modern jet fighter. It is probably around 300-500km/h and it could never reach 6G. However, jet fighters could easily reach 9G in high speed air battle.
