Deer Population has Exploded in England - Is there a long term solution?

England's deer population continues to threaten the vegetation which so many species depend on for survival. More uniform habitats results in reduced niches for other species. Deer are a core part of the ecosystem in their role as seed dispersers. The problem is not their presence but their oversized populations. The island is experiencing its largest wild herd for 1000 years. The population is around 2 million strong. Normally, the population rises by about 30% each year. To which they are then reduced down by the annual culling that takes place.
The pandemic has seen an increase in even MORE deer as deer hunters and government culling programs stopped. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals says the population is causing over 74,000 traffic accidents a year and inflicting heavy damage to crops, woodlands and marshes. In response to the climate crisis they hope to increase tree planting to about 74,000 acres a year by 2025, up from about 25,000 acres a year now. An overpopulation of deer also prevents the government from planting more trees as deer eat saplings.
Some are proposing a mass cull and say it would ultimately require eliminating as many as a million deer through the combined efforts of private landowners, licensed shooters and public bodies like Forestry England. But will Britain, which prides itself as a nation of animal lovers, accept killing many more deer? It has the potential to cause upset with a well-developed animal rights movement.
Predators exert direct and indirect effects on their ecosystem by directly influencing their prey and, in turn, plant and animal species progressively down the food chain. Other niches are also expanded by their presence. Leftover carcasses also provide the ideal food for detritivores and scavengers. Ultimately where there are predators in the environment usually you’ll find thriving nature.
Humans have replaced the natural role of the apex predator in Britain when it comes to regulating deer populations. Our lack of intervention during the pandemic has magnified this unnatural approach and the absence of predatory animals. What is it going to take to get used to these animals again?
Animals are suffering…. So many deer are going to die. It’s an ethical dilemma. Someone once said to me, are you an advocate for the individual or the species? Because an overpopulation of deer ultimately means the herd will suffer short term and long term. But it’s our fault they are overpopulated - surely prevention is better than cure? And predators would prevent the problem and science and success elsewhere suggests the environment would thrive. Equaliberm would be found.
Calls for rewilding Britain have increased since the pandemic as people have started to notice nature and therefore the lack of it across our landscapes. But what are we willing to accept to get it back? What animal are we willing to share the land with?

A tasty Venison pie and a spicy Venison Curry do seem to be in order.

I'm not sure about the Big cats kept as pets back in the 60s/70s if they was neutered to stop them spraying and then released into the wild after the 1976 Dangerous animals act, obviously they have a population considering the many reports and the attack of a young Welsh boy in Monmouth but the population is not big enough to solve the deer crisis. Yes I replyed twice on this subject as it got me thinking, thanks for sharing!!

Yeah I agree, there's a small number of them, but the problem with knowing the population is all the FAKE NEWS! AND REPORTS GOING AROUND

@@thewildlifephotographer297 yes I agree that there's fake news and reports especially from people who have got something to gain on platforms like TH-cam and mistaken identity doesn't help but farmers who have lost cattle, there's the Gordon Ramsey case, and incidents like my father who was less than 20 feet away from one early one morning at work prove we have a breeding population in the UK.

Simple. Reintroduce apex predators which fed on those deer. But honestly i doubt that will happen. I give up on Britain there's no hope for it being rewilded.

Wolves and Lynx reintroduction will help a lot. Also a designated bow season for people to hunt them in wilderness and woodland areas.

well its clear that every thing so far has failed to keep on top of it so now we should be pushing for the Apex Predators, even if it means putting in a petition may help force the issue.

One simple solution that would provide a good supply of healthy organic meat would be to make hunting deer easier and less controlled, for instance by bow hunting like in much of Europe. Tax relief on all equipment related to this would be good too.

Long term solution?.. we are the ones who are overpopulated. I think the solution is opening up more land and creating walk ways under roads and introducing natural predators that we have persecuted over the last few centuries.

Surely trial runs need to be done in large natural areas such as the Highlands and the Forrest of Dean. Introduce the lynx as the wolf is unfortunately not going to happen any time soon.

prevention of deer overpopulation is already too late.

Reintroduce the wolf is the natural solution but if there are big cats living in the UK it's only a matter of time before they have a big enough population to solve this problem.
