After attending my son and daughter in law's emotional confirmation in Leeds Cathedral last night, I switched on the radio this morning and heard this hauntingly beautiful choral piece for the first time. Makes you forget about the troublesome world we live in for a few minutes.
My high school choir is singing this and it's one of the most stunning and breathtaking pieces we've done. We always have something like this, Lux Arumque or Seal Lullaby every year, but this became my new favorite. It's just as fun to sing as it is to listen to. Even as an alto, because this song is one of those rare ones that actually gives altos quite a bit of the melody.
Lol are you sure we aren't in the same choir? We sang Lux last year and our Sotto Voce choir sang the Seal Lullaby two years ago. Lux was definitely my favorite, but I like this one as well (the alto's having the melody is definitely a bonus)!
That final note at the end, though. As a soprano, I'm happy that my alto friends have a little more to work with. Singing the melody all the time is so boring.
This was played for my bridal procession. We picked it for our wedding because of how accurately it describes a powerful and immense love. We felt it was very fitting for the occasion. I still get goosebumps when I hear it.
It is a great pity that there are people out there who cannot, nor care to, appreciate the beauty that can be created by amazing composers and singers such as these. I only know that I love its ability to pull the mind along into a story of its own making and that I hope that there are others too that can see it too.
Bravissimo!!!!!
My high school concert choir and I sang this song in one of our stair wells, we sounded like angels and we had quite a few students cry when they heard us.
I did this audio recording....I wish what they posted sounded as good as the original recording.....this one sounds not quite so good. But I'm glad so many people have enjoyed it.
Superb, majestic, religious, solemn, and created wonderful ... praise to the Almighty God, as we wanted a composer Ola Gjeilo that composes music by listening to his heart and the greatness of God !!!
We are singing this in choir for a festival and spring concert and i absolutely love being the alto part for this song!!! :) Mainly because we have the melody. :)
When the altos sing the C# instead of the C natural towards the end, I get chills. Every time. Even though I know it's coming. Amazing how altering one note can plumb the depths of your soul.
I was in this choir! It's crazy that it has so many views :) Dr. Sperry was the best conductor! (The festival was hosted by Dr. Ohrt, but the choir was conducted by Dr. Ethan Sperry)
I was in this choir and that song literally changed my whole perspective on composing, singing, and life as a whole. This will always be one of my favorite pieces of music.
I sang this song with my choir at Carnegie in March it was a breathtaking experience to hear our sound echo around us and with such a profound piece :) so Incredible and made me proud to be an alto
This piece, along with LUMINOUS NIGHT and THE SPHERES, is being performed tonight in Dallas at the City Performance Hall, by the Arts District Chorale and members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. I won't be able to go, but came here to check out the music, and it's lovely!
I sang this during my first semester in college choir - my first choir experience EVER! We sang it half a step higher because we were having pitch problems, but it sounded just as good higher than it did in the original key (in my opinion)... Anyway, I absolutely love this piece! It has become one of my favorite pieces I've sung in the two years that I've been in choir! Great job by the PMEA Honor Choir! You guys sounded fantastic!
That's kinda funny I'm going through my first semester and college and this is my first time in choir as well and we are singing this just like you did. I also absolutely love this piece.
So Am I! I did it for the Utah's All State Choir a couple months ago, I was a 2nd tenor though, and I agree, this is a really hard song, but not impossible to pull it off, but after singing it with a +600 people choir I just can't imagine this piece being performed by a smaller choir haha
I heard this piece for the first time the last Saturday (Dec 10th, 2016) performed by Tusculum College choir; Kathryn E may, Director at Milligan College, in JC, TN. This is the most beautiful and grateful way to say "Thanks" to Christ, ....who is manifesting his spirit in the Northern lights.
I was in this choir and it was AMAZING. I love the music Dr Sperry picked for this! And I especially loved this piece. Alto power :) Speaking of which, this PMEA Region VI choir wasn't conducted by Joseph Ohrt, but by Ethan Sperry.
I was in this choir as well (basses for life lol), thanks for uploading it! PMEA man, such great conductors and people. I miss the choir scene now that i'm in college
just beautiful o my this song makes me wanna cry :") i love this i love this when it's with the piano its more heart warming but i love this where doing it 2 in my choir and we never lost :D our competitions and i hope it stay like that
Im so excited to hear this piece as my son is learning to sing it in academy this year in his chorale, 11th Hour. Can't wait to hear it live. Breathtaking.
@KOStudio1 I think I understand. What I feel when I listen to his music is an ache deep in my chest to the point where if the song was any more beautiful I might just die. In my opinion though that's the best way to go: bliss overload. :)
@jleisure7 Oh my gosh, I know how you feel! Desert Vista High School has been doing Gjeilo's music for years (we even got a commission of "The Ground,") and each time, I feel like I'm going to cry when I perform it because it makes me FEEL. I don't know if that would make sense to anyone besides someone who has performed his music because it's just so... moving
Aanvang 16.00 uur. Toegang, een vrije gift
Never got to sing this myself in choir (I'm a first tenor) but I heard it live and it made me tear up! Literally so beautiful! I wanted to sing this so bad so I made a short clip of the ending with me singing all the parts. Kind of a one man choir thing. Check it out if you'd like! It would mean a lot. Anyways, such a masterpiece ❤️
@SiyukiNakushi hey dont beat urself up about it. i love loch lomond, but half the time, i shouldnt even open my mouth to try to attempt the solo, because of that same problem. if i dont start out on the right note, it all sucks. but anyway.. lol. what vocal part do you sing? i sing tenor 1 :)
He wrote it in tribute, in lack of a better word, to the Northern lights that he often saw in Norway. If one were to ask Music Professor (and I have heard them talk about this song), you could say that he is comparing the great and terrible beauty of the northern lights to God.
@decondemon yeah. My choir derector said that since i got the starting note wrong i cant sing it... Untill i fix it... I was really upset about it because i thought i had done just fine. But i had a lot to work on. It made me very upset. I actually love this song and i just couldnt sing it right in my head so i said that i hated it. :( anyway. Ive never heard of Mozarts Requiem......
@Pyrotoman maybe. Also at the very beginning "Pulchra" 0:01 and 0:02 listen carefully. There is the same note, but the tenors do not sing it right. Or maybe it is again the same tenor that did the same mistake at 2:01, as you say.
Lyrics are "Pulchra es amica mea, suavis et decora sicut Jerusalem/ Beautiful is my love: sweet and graceful, like Jerusalem (from the Song of Solomon 6 :3) terribilis castrorum acies ordinata. Averte oculos tuos a me quia ipsi me avolare fecerunt/ terrible, like an army in battle array. Avert your eyes from me, for they have made me flee away.. (from the Song of Solomon 6 :4)
They're singing much quicker than my choir's practices XD We might speed up to this, though I think it'd be more alluring if it slowed down. It feels more like a slow song.
@decondemon I sing Alto. :) I sung the song again to my choir director and he put me back on the part. :) I guess my entire day of obsessing over that one part paid off. :) lol. Yeah. Most of the time i do the same thing, if i cant hit the right note or my voice just doesnt sound right for that day i just dont sing that one section of the song. :/
❤❤❤❤❤

Hannah Carpenter Haha right? I sang this in my college choir sometime ago, but it still haunts me in a good way haha! Wonderful piece!
Yes, my school sang this too! The altos (like me) get to do so much in this piece! It's probably the most fun piece I've ever done in high school.
Hannah Carpenter altos have my favorite part at the end♥️
That final note at the end, though. As a soprano, I'm happy that my alto friends have a little more to work with. Singing the melody all the time is so boring.

I still get goosebumps when I hear it.
Gorgeous! Gjeilo knows both the beauties of nature and the capacities of the human voice. It is a joy to sing his works!
It is a great pity that there are people out there who cannot, nor care to, appreciate the beauty that can be created by amazing composers and singers such as these. I only know that I love its ability to pull the mind along into a story of its own making and that I hope that there are others too that can see it too.

Ola Gjeiloa is a fantastic composer. He is the Edvard Grieg of this century and a rising star in nowadays classical music. This piece is amazing, too.
Wolfram Hüttermann I love Grieg and Gjeilo! :)
We sang this for our high school choir my freshman year. Has to be my favorite memory of that year.
I did this audio recording....I wish what they posted sounded as good as the original recording.....this one sounds not quite so good. But I'm glad so many people have enjoyed it.
Brad Zabelski Any possibility one could get a good recording of this piece?
Thanks, -jr
One of the most gorgeous contemporary compositions around!
Isn't it great when music as glorious as this comes into our musical lives.
Ola Gjeilo is definitely one of the greatest living composers.
Superb, majestic, religious, solemn, and created wonderful ... praise to the Almighty God, as we wanted a composer Ola Gjeilo that composes music by listening to his heart and the greatness of God !!!
Richard Thank you for sharing my words. This song shakes the heart and the mind for its heavenly beauty!
Great performance!! Great choir!! Great music!! Great composer!! I'm searcing for moreof all right now!!
Just sang this for our choir festival today, and we got all 1's!! On to states!! Such a beautiful song.
We are singing this in choir for a festival and spring concert and i absolutely love being the alto part for this song!!! :) Mainly because we have the melody. :)
New favourite song. Were singing for our chorus, and im in loooove. This is just so pretty.
When the altos sing the C# instead of the C natural towards the end, I get chills. Every time. Even though I know it's coming. Amazing how altering one note can plumb the depths of your soul.
Ola, my friend, you are as brilliant as these beautiful lights. Bravo!
I was in this choir! It's crazy that it has so many views :)
Dr. Sperry was the best conductor! (The festival was hosted by Dr. Ohrt, but the choir was conducted by Dr. Ethan Sperry)
I sing alto in choir when we sang this song and it was simply stunning. Beautiful song!
Sing tenor part to this song, absolutely love it.
Same here. We sang heartland right? And Noel?
I was there too! :D omg what are the odds finding all of us again. cx haha
I did that song 5 years ago in 2012, I'm surprised they reused the song! Beautiful never the less!
They used it again in 2017! I agree, this is such an awesome song to sing as an alto :)
I absolutely love this piece. I sang it in my Acappella choir this past year and it was amazing. I love being a saprano in it.
this song & pictures sent me into another world ... faraway from this "real-world" ... not many songs/music can do that..
This song is very haunting and beautiful. This is a lovely rendition.
I can't take it... The Tenors sound so beautiful.
man i miss singing this song in choir i hope we will be able to sing this song again this year i love it
I absolutely loved being part of this choir. Both the conductor and the students were amazing! Thanks for sharing our performance with the world :)
This song is beautiful!!!
Such a beautiful, fulfilling and inspiring song to listen to and sing! gives me goosebumps every time! Majestic!!!!
Breathtaking!!!
I love this piece, especially the bass line; it's easy to follow, and in a very good place in my voice.
I love this piece. I feel proud that my heritage is Norweian.
This is a masterpiece.
Round alto for this song, and I live it sooo much
I sung this in my highschool choir and i loved it so much! It was so effin pretty

Hey I'm a tenor too! A female tenor but can easily get all the notes and we are learning this for our carol service and am loving it!
Danni Ireland Neat!
Very difficult to sing this glorious piece well. This choir does this piece justice,

Hermoso!!! lo estamos ensayando en el Coro.
@jleisure7 The Sunrise Mass was performed by my collegiate choir, and I felt the same effect. This man has a true gift.
God is in this music...
Superbe
It's a wonder that high school students are able to create such beautiful art
2:23 is all I have to say. It gave me chills.
