The film shows David Bowie heroically taking on major challenges as he is reinventing himself as an artist. The relationship with his brother is moving. Both Johnny Flynn and Marc Maron are brilliant. The cinematography is superb. It is very a very respectful and creative representation of David Bowie at that chapter in his career. I loved the film. Not everyone will like it. I encourage people to see for themselves.

I just watched the film last night, and totally agree. It's art, and art can't be dictated by the vote of fans, the estate or even Bowie himself. Bowie didn't allow anyone else to tell him what he could or could not sing about. Give a filmmaker the same freedom.

I hear of this one singer guy named David Jones who would have hated it

@@slimturnpike No one is trying to dictate anything but the film wasn’t very good it’s as simple as that. As a lifelong Bowie fan of far too many years I care to remember I just found the whole thing totally cringeworthy on so many levels. If David Bowie was still alive Im pretty certain that he would feel the same.

@@Wishful-Thinking I thought it was a good film YMMV. I think Bowie would've liked it, and I'm also a lifelong fan.

@@slimturnpike Well each to their own I guess. As far as Bowie liking it? If he had a downer on Velvet Goldmine then he would definitely have had a downer on this. Velvet Goldmine wasn’t the greatest Bowie related movie either but it was 10 times better than this. Imho of course.

To be honest I’m a little tired of this “backlash” to the movie and them having to explain over and over again that the intention has never been to create a biographical film. I like it and it is a study of a very short period of Bowie’s life. Johnny Flynn does a great job as a performer. After all, if we start posing limitations of what is allowed to be artistically interpreted we are very soon going to hit the wall of censorship and nobody wants that, do we?

There is a sensitivity in the film, and having the experience of being in the business of music was a great advantage to Johnny and the director , and they seem very mutually admiring of each others work so it appears that it was a fantastic experience for them both creatively.
To make a film about a great music Artist and not have a single one of their songs in it is really not ideal, and there really is no way around that. Artists simply cannot be explored without including their work.

Where’s the part where he apologizes for this monstrosity made against the family’s will only 5 years after his death. They portrayed him horribly, not accurate at all, he looks nothing like him even couldn’t even get that right, as a Bowie fan who’s researched so much about him I can confindently say I could probably make a better film in my garage then this. This was a a greedy mistake that wanted to cash in on films about musicians no matter it’s quality or morality.

Also love the “few people against the film” part. Most if not all Bowie fans were against this film including Bowie’s wife and kids, and Bowie himself who wanted no film made of him.

It is wrong to make a film without the blessing of his fecking widow and children , himself, only 5 years after he died of cancer. A still fresh wound. They didn’t tell any important story either it’s not like it was accurate, there are plenty of docs and books that told it.

The only Bowie film I'd like to see is nothing at all like a normal dramatised biography but perhaps some kind of collage of abstract film drawing together the themes and ideas from his work. Something on the level that he himself would appreciate. Certainly not this utter trash. But really, he left us so much of himself in his work and performance that there is no need for anything more.

Even more importantly than his family, Bowie said it himself in his will that he didn't want these films. How the fuck can anyone justify not acknowledging the person they made the film about? Gabriel is exactly the kind of person David found disgusting, like those leeches at RCA who put out greatest hits albums without his input. His career, and especially his relationship with his brother, weren't things he wanted probed into for monetary gain. He kept things personal for a reason. This film is everything wrong with the film industry.

@@chrismeadows4216 yeah I said that in a comment below David didn’t want any film made about him. Imagine disrespecting the wishes of someone who passed away from cancer? They are absolutely disgusting human beings.

As a Bowie fan from 1972 I watched the film with trepidation, turned out the only thing it made me feel was that I wanted to see a real biograpical film, I know that's not gonna happen but it made me play Bowie albums even more

"How does it make you feel personally to see the resistance from these few people about the film?"
*50 times more people boycotted it than actually saw it*
I love how you tried to be polite. 😅
Gabriel is deluded. He thought people decided not to see it because it would have to compete with Bohemian Rhapsody and Rocketman and it didn't have Bowie music? Wow. Surely Bowie's will saying not to make it has no bearing.
The fans love David. They would honor his last wishes. That's what a caring person would do, and Gabriel seems to care more about his artistic vision than an actual human life.
None of this is Johnny's fault. He accepted a job other people wouldn't. The problem is in how the character was written. If you listen to an actual 1971 interview from David, he was talking to interviewers about his fellow musicians and their management and a bunch of obscure facts about recording. That's how he always seemed to be, really. Movie David seems like a dick when he talks about his albums and does the "mystical mime act" and acts so insecure. Anyone who has heard the interviews from the period knows that isn't what David did in interviews. He carried himself very thoughtfully and he was very charismatic. He was a guy with a substantial hit song, after all. He knew he was a great writer. Ziggy Stardust was an artistic venture and the film makes it seem like a business move. Stardust is a bullshit movie with a generic rock star who is trying to be David Bowie. That's an issue. Johnny doesn't look like Bowie, but casting wasn't his choice, and the acting isn't the problem. The writing and presentation are the problems, and Gabriel was the one responsible. He should have cancelled the film years ago, but wasted studio money on it that they'll never get back. He'll be lucky to find work again after he walked into making a film people didn't want and found it disrespectful to have been made. He needs to recognize that.

I found it interesting separating it from Bowie's life and observing it from what parallels with a musician like Flynn. But it was a strange choice of what to show. But that's also wht was interesting about it.
It's strange that there is so much gruff for this film. Art is art and it was well acted and about a topic that rarely gets discussed. So kudos there

Когда снимают знаменитых людей, не требуется чтоб похожесть или идентичность была. Снимают биографию человека. А фанаты любите своего певца и дальше. Джонни сделал работу, которую требовал от него режиссер. ❤️🙏

Just watched Stardust and it’s just awful. Truly awful! How did they think they would get away with this? Leaving aside the fact it doesn’t contain any of Bowie’s actual music the film is just dire. Poor acting and poor casting of the people who were involved in Bowie’s life and career at the time. To be fair Johnny Flynn didn’t make a too bad a stab at playing Bowie as far as anyone could play him although he was far from brilliant, he just needed a better film to be in. Stardust is a major fail as a David Bowie movie imho.
