The black thing is a float so when sucking up water it'll float when full and block the suction to prevent damage to the motor, not necessarily to block it incase it tips although that might be a secondary use.
Been using mine and others ones I got used for years. Had no idea the foam was instead of paper whennusing it wet. Ive always had both filters in 100% of time. I dont need to read no stinkin directions!! Thanks for the information!
New subscriber here. Really like your videos so far, and will be checking out more of them. Glad to see that you invest in good equipment and brands like EGO, Shop Vac, and the Hondas I see in the background here 😉. My dad always taught me that spending a few extra dollars for good equipment is always worth it!
Helpful video. My Shop Vac instruction booklet mentions that there are two suggested ways to clean the filter - bang it against something or rinse it from the inside, out. I've seen a few videos that use an air compressor, like you also mentioned (I don't have one). Have you tried rinsing it? Does it take forever to dry? I mainly use it for my car but did vacuum a dirty boiler room floor. The filter definitely has dust on it but you can still see much of the white paper as well. What do you suggest?
@Andrea L. thanks for the question. I have not washed this one, but I have washed others similar to it. And yes, it does take a while to dry out right. Also, sometimes it's just not quite right after you wash it. The paper doesn't always get it's shape back all the way. My number one suggestion is to get a new paper pleated filter and a filter bag and use both. Then, my second suggestion is to invest into a decent compressor. It will come in handy all the time. I don't know if that is the answer that you were looking for, but I hope that it helped.
Ok, thats all good, but what about the filter on top? My dad has an old shop vac that he never used a filter, bag, nothing. Ive got everything, but cant get to the one on the very top. Ive been trying to take the lid apart, but there's torx security screws. I think there must be an easier way...?
I'm not sure what filter you are talking about, but if it inside and being put there with security torx then it is probably not made to change. Sound like your model might have an exhaust filter. If this is so just blowing it out with an air compressor might be best.
That is what I do. I have two shop vacs and they both have a foam filter and a paper filter. However, one shop vac I use for dry pickup and the other one for mostly wet. The one I use for dry pickup has a paper bag as well. The paper filter in the one for wet pickup can be used wet or dry, because it was designed to repel water.
Don't have to use the filter bags, but they are awesome. If you are sucking up finer dust like sawdust, drywall dust, ect they actually let you fill the vac up and still have suction. If you suck up finer dust, and only have the cartridge filter then it will clog up and you will loose a lot of suction.
Informative video thanks! I just got a craftsman shop vac to vacuum up wet dirt that is clogging up the French drain all around the basement of house I just moved into and also small puddles. It only came with the paper filter thing. Sounds like I need the foam sleeve for the puddles but what abt the dirt. Should I get the bag or just the foam sleeve is fine?? Sorry this is all new to me… TIA!
When you have a situation like that I would suggest the foam sleeve with a filter over it. Like this one www.amazon.com/Shop-vac-9010700-Reusable-Filter-3-Count/dp/B00002N6RV?crid=2HOF3FYYYWZLD&dchild=1&keywords=shop+vac+filters&qid=1633552007&sprefix=shop+vac%2Caps%2C203&sr=8-7&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=9ecb962d1fef58457b22440d538d6401&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl At least that is what I would suggest for that specific situation.
When I vacuum clean water without any filter installed (vacuum emptied) water droplets spray all over the wall from the exhaust port, will the foam sleeve prevent that ?
Some moisture will still make it through, but yes the foam filter will make a big difference. 👍 So glad to help! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
When you say cap, is this what you mean? www.amazon.com/Shop-Vac-901-15-00-Performance-Dacron/dp/B0000CBJIH?crid=3PIVN22RCOEJL&keywords=shop+vac+hepa+filter&qid=1642354878&sprefix=shop+vac+hepa+filter%2Caps%2C109&sr=8-26&linkCode=ll1&tag=greatwhitenin-20&linkId=99e49049688a84f2216ea44ddab6848a&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tl
If it is this same model, then no. It doesn't even have the ability to hook the hose to the exhaust to blow. And the actual models that have a blower, the motor pops off from the main unit and then really becomes a blower.
With leaves or other items like that you will get a lot of dust that comes with it. And that will get pulled right through the foam filter into the motor.
What about those blue cloth filters shaped like a bag with elastic on the top? I'm thinking it is for larger debris and goes on like the wet foam filter? Not too sure... Any insight is appreciated!
Ok, not 100% sure on those because I don't use them. But I am 90% sure they go over the paper pleated cartridge filters as a pre-filter to help you clean and extend the life of those expensive filters.
@Chad Jazeera, I might have been partially wrong. I have seen people use that sleeve over the cartridge filters to help keep them clean, but I was using my daughter's Hyper Tough little 1.5 gal vac and went to clean it out. It has no cartridge filter. It has a foam filter then that sleeve over it to filter out the dust. So I imagine that you can use it just fine that way if you like.
I meant the filter is unaffected by water. The diverter on the tub of the shop vac where the hose goes in pushes the water away from the motor. The water is heavy so it drops down into the tub. Now some water vapor is still swirling around of course, along with lighter debris. The foam filter will stop the debris and help catch the water vapor.
There is no problem with that. I might suggest spending a few dollars on some filter bags so you don't loose suction. Also, when it is full you just throw it away and get a new one. Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org
I’ve had 2 4 gallon vacs and they used a sheet of paper like material and a rubber ring to hold it around the cylinder. I figure many home owners have them too because they are the cheapest kind. I use the bags most of the time because my type of filter does a terrible job.
Oh yes. I remember those. They do suck. Thanks for watching and don't forget to stop by our website for many more helpful videos. www.greatwhiteninja.com
You really shouldn't. It keeps debris and full water droplets from going into the motor. The float keeps water from pouring into the motor if it gets too full or tips over.
No they are not, and they do very little filtering at all. They just help to keep objects out of the motor during wet pick up. Glad it helped! Thank you for watching. Check out hundreds more of our videos at www.aroundthehome.org/
Thanks! The (Craftsmen) manufacture manual description for how and what to use and when was awful. Completely useless. I thought the black one was a pre-filter.

Man!!! Thank you! The amount of stupid people advising to run these things with foam & the paper filter over it or bitching in reviews because the foam filter they bought ripped when they tried to put it OVER the paper filter is astonishing! In these people's defense, I guess the instructions aren't clear enough that come with the vacs, but good grief! Again, THANKS!

1:05 Does the black cover have the inside of the cup facing the motor or does the flat side seal against the motor hole?
The flat side goes towards the motor.
Thanks you for your video. I have no idea about those inner bags for the shopvac. I will try them.

You can use the paper filter in conjunction with the foam insert.

If you suck up finer dust, and only have the cartridge filter then it will clog up and you will loose a lot of suction.

When you put the foam filter on.
Is it safe to clean and reuse shop vac filters for woodworking? I usually blow off the cluttered filter with compressed air.
