[CC | First R151 Debut!] SMRT R151 825/826 Ride from EW31 Tuas Crescent to EW29 Joo Koon

C151Adv films the first ever maiden service trip operated by the Alstom Movia R151! This particular train was first delivered to Singapore on 3 November 2022, and made its first ever service appearance on 4 June 2023. This would mark the beginning of the process to retire the ageing first 3 generation trains on the North-South East-West Lines (NSEWL) that would be replaced by the Alstom R151s till 2026.
How exciting for a train debut to be, lively people cheering as the R151 makes its approach into the station before opening its doors. Also, the Tuas West Extension (TWE) stretch stations are rather quiet and empty, so hearing this activity in the station is not a sight that I would always see. I would have wished that the noisy travel along the TWE sector would be significantly reduced on the R151, but whatever. (2017 C151B TWE memories)
The Alstom R151 is manufactured by Changchun Alstom Railway Vehicles and CRRC Changchun. The first R151 train was constructed and shipped to Singapore in 2020 and February 2022 respectively. The R151 trains are delivered to Tuas West Depot (TWD), after docking and unloading at Jurong Port.
As of 4 June 2023, 16 R151 trains have been delivered to Singapore so far. A total of 66+40 R151 trains have been purchased by LTA:
- 66 trains to replace the Kawasaki C151s
- Additional 40 trains to replace the Siemens C651s and Kawasaki C751B.
The first R151 train would be making its service debut on the NSEWL on 4th of June 2023, after a half-year postponement from the previous end-2022 debut schedule that was previously targeted. The other R151 trains would slowly debut at a rate of 2 trains/mth, according to a newsletter by Channel NewsAsia. The R151 trains are likely to operate on the East-West Line (EWL) only this year, and continue operations to the North-South Line (NSL) from early-2024 onwards.
