As a big fan of the project, this is truly Xiu Xiu with the training wheels on. They've made some of the most bizarre music ever, trust me you should dive deeper, you're gonna have a lot of fun!
Xiu Xiu is my all time favorite band. This is probably their most tame project, aside from maybe "OH NO". I recommend all their stuff. They are absolutely not for everyone but regardless are always worth following. Their debut "Knife Play" is a good starting point. "Girl With Basket of Fruit" is auditory schizophrenia and I love it. "Fabulous Muscles" is also a great starting point, less noisy than their debut and more melodic. Love the channel!
This band works a lot in extremes. If you analyze the lyrics in more of their songs, you'll come to realize the lead singer Jamie Stewart...takes things pretty far. (For an example look a the song "Support Our Troops OH!") For lack of better words, this band most definitely could not have started in the more recent climate. He sings from the perspective of other people very often. From suicide, abortion, gender identity, depression, self harm, homosexuality, and much more! It's one of the darkest projects I've ever heard. Fascinating as hell and most definitely worth a look!
Also Xiu Xiu have collaborated with Swans over the years a bunch, from having Gira sing Bowie’s lines in their version of Under Pressure lol to having the bassist and percussionist from Swans play for Xiu Xiu’s live shows
This album as a whole is their poppiest album, and from what i understand alot of the lyrics and other songs on the album are specifically about abuse, and child trafficking, specifically the tracks Petite and Faith Torn Apart, which ends with a spoken word poem. Xiu Xiu's later albums get much less personal and focus more on specific topics and themes, but their early work definitely is more personal with the singer.
I love your pre-lyrical dive analysis of this. You pretty much hit it on the head there with the restrained rage, etc. Singer/multi-instrumentalist Jamie Stewart often makes music with a lot of pain behind it imo. And the music just perfectly fits that vibe. It's often far more abrasive than I want day to day, but when I'm in the mood, man does it hit me.
It’s the fucked up gay step-child of new wave dance (Erasure, Pet Shop Boys etc), glitch electronica and post-punk. I’m a definite fan but my appetite for this flavour is very specific. My favourite track is “Apistat Commander” from relatively early in their discography.
YES, MY FAVORITE BAND!! You should check out more Xiu Xiu music, they've got a really varied catalogue. Wondering is one of their most "pop" songs and I love it
they have a long catalogue of folk/singer-songwriter music, yet they also have experimental rock and post-industrial music, one of the most unique discographies I've heard
Oh yes Xiu Xiu has made at least two or three of my all-time favorite albums. Even though it’s so unconventional, this album (FORGET) is just unbelievably catchy. The follow-up (Girl with Basket of Fruit) is wall-to-wall bonkers. Would love to see you cover them more in the future!
Xiu Xiu are such a fascinating rabbit hole of a band. I’m by no means an expert because they release so much but their output spans just about every avant garde style possible. Their cover albums of Nina Simone and the Twin Peaks Soundtrack are both mind bending, definitely the most revision I’ve ever heard in remixes/covers - they make Nina’s songs into mini nightmares and the sheer soundcraft in the Twin Peaks covers are jawdropping. Out of their current stuff Girl With a Basket of Fruit is probably my favorite - that album is genuinely disturbing to listen to and deeply uncomfortable
Interesting track. Sounds like post-punk but filtered through a lot of more modern production techniques. It's perhaps a bit too repetitive for my taste, but I definitely dig the vibe they're going for. Intrigued to check out more and see what else they can do.
For what it's worth, others have said this is one of their tamer songs. Not sure if the repetition continues in their experimental stuff but I'm intrigued.
you should change the title to loser reacts to xiu xiu
Done!
TRUEEEEE

Before I even press play, great song choice. Im excited. I love your insight and curiosity of music.
Something about this reminds me of Hesitation Marks era Nine Inch Nails, but with Bowie-esque vocals. Not bad.
