    My childhood Golden got arthritis pretty early on. We did excersizes such as massaging his legs and shoulders and stretching his tendons. (He would sometimes refuse to walk. Even before arthritis. Lazy boy.) We also gave him eggs and oliveoil for the omegas, and rosehip powder for the galaktolipids. 🙂 He still got worse, naturally, but my baby lived to be 16. 💛

    I think Amber is in love with Dr Burstyn, I mean look at the way she behaves haha. What if my pet refuses to drink water from her bowl, she tends to sit by the sink and meow asking me to turn the tap on and only then drinks. Or drinks from a glass left on the table. I have to add, her water bowl is cleaned and filled daily with fresh water.

    I got my Golden when she was 8 and already arthritic. I immediately started her on glucosamine and fish oil (she and I share, hehe) and it was a huge help for her, she started to move better after a month or two. She's now 13 and her arthritis is starting to affect her again, unfortunately. We take slow walks and lots of rests and we turn around when she's ready. What I'm wondering about is arthritis in cats. My oldest is 18 and still quite active, but his back end is definitely full of arthritis. He's always been an easy keeper as far as his weight, he's never weighed more than 10lbs (our newest vet was worried he was sick because he's in such good shape and they're not used to seeing such a healthy weight, hehe). That said, I bought steps so he can more easily get on my bed (though he can jump as well). We tried some shots of ... something the vet recommended that I forget what it was, but it didn't help at all. Is there anything you know of that I could do to help him be more comfortable?

    Thank you for your videos! We have a 12 year old lab who's still energetic and agile, however as he's aged, he's getting a lot more nervous. He starts to shake and wants to go outside a lot and hide in the bushes, even when it's raining. He used to get nervous and hide behind furnishings even when he was young, but now he's more nervous than not. What can I do to help him?
    P. S: He's been living with me for the past month (I've moved out and I'm babysitting him for my family while they're on holiday) and he's never nervous with me. Maybe it is an environmental factor at my parents' house? Or maybe he's better suited to my lifestyle?

    Our dog Pepsi is 14 years old now, she’s a golden Labrador Retriever and has developed some pretty painful arthritis. With the amount of painkillers she’s been prescribed, she’s on more medication than the average pensioner!
    Nowadays it’s a struggle to take her places, there’s a local park right across the street from us, so walking her isn’t so much of an issue as taking her to the vet. She didn’t like the ramp we got to help her get in the car, so my dad put together a two part step for her, complete with carpet so she didn’t slip. It’s gotten too difficult for her to even manage that, so we’ve resorted to bodily lifting her, something she isn’t particularly fond of.
    This leads me to my question: are there any preferable methods to lifting a large dog?
    We currently have one person lift the front and another at the back in order to spread out surface area, but sometimes there’s only one of us available. We want to make the rest of her life comfortable, and since we have to take her to the vet far more often it seems like this is an important part of that.
    P.S. Thank you for your videos, they’re full of useful info and are nice to watch!

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Great question, I am actually planning a video to demonstrate safe dog lifting for different sizes! For a lab, lifting with two people is best. With just one, I would recommend scooping the dog with one arm behind hind legs and the other on chest. Best to do it from a deep squat and engage your core so you don’t hurt your own back!

    You passion for animals is apparent. Thank you for these videos. After taking my dog off kibble, and feeding canned food, he got into shape quickly, along this daily walks. His coat became more lustrous. Although I put out dry food for him, he doesn't touch it. Raw meat is better for a dog, I understand, but I can't afford that.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thank you for the comment. Your experience is common, but please do not regret not feeding raw food. It is not at all good for your pet, and you are protecting your dog by not feeding it. I know, I know, everybody likes to talk about its benefits, but if you look at the scientific literature, they are absent, but the risks are real and proven (risks like liver abscesses, GI infection, and shedding salmonella in poop, posing a health risk to owners). Remember that "kibble" or "canned food" are just textures, not food types, and certainly some foods are going to have more fatty acids, more moisture, different ingredient balances, which will make some pets look better and some worse. My advice to owners is usually find something that works for your dog and stick with it, without overthinking it, unless they develop a clinical problem, and then feed whatever the vet recommends :-).

    • @southernwanderer7912
      @southernwanderer7912 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for you reply. My dog loves his canned food. He's a large dog and about 16 years old now, but he still loves his daily walks.
      There's a guy that does videos of his Husky on TH-cam and he feeds his dog a raw meat diet. The owner does tell people, if you feed raw food to your dog, you better know what you're doing, but too many people I'm afraid will try this. Right now, the dog looks well, but who knows what the long term will bring.
      Thank you again for your videos. Your upbeat, happy disposition, and your apparent love of animals makes them enjoyable to watch.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      If you have a sled dog in the far north, maybe it is ok to feed it the raw meat of the seal you shot on your last trapping expedition. Not so much if you live in civilization. There are many opinions on TH-cam. Few of them are based on reading as many scientific papers as I do ;-).

    • @southernwanderer7912
      @southernwanderer7912 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I think the TH-cam guy with the Husky lives in either Florida or Texas, definitely a hot area in a city. :(

    My aunt's 13-year-old german sheperd recently got euthanized. Her arthritis in her back legs and spine was so bad, that she started having trouble walking to the point that she couldn't even stand anymore. Now, my aunt is very fit and often goes hiking, biking or cross-country skiing with her pets, all of them are pretty athletic, so weight was definitely not a problem with this dog. A vet told my aunt that a factor for the fast spreading (I don't know if that's the right word to use, my English is not the best) of the illness was, that she overstrained the dog with mountain-tours when it was little and that this made an impact on it's growth and development. What do you think about that prognosis?

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I respectfully disagree. While injuries we sustain early in life can come back to haunt us, I don't think you can blame exercise for old age arthritis, especially in a german shepherd, on running up and down mountains. Good muscle tone is protective of our joints. Also, german shepherds have a strong predisposition to hip dysplasia, which leads to hip arthritis, as well as several other mobility issues. So, your aunt shouldn't blame herself for her dog's arthritis, and I really should make a video on the history of this breed :-).

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Thanks for the suggestion, I will be happy to. in the mean time, don’t worry too much, kittens have a way of making themselves comfortable wherever they go and older animals are usually unusually tolerant of kitten misbehaviour.

    I don’t have dogs just two young cats and I supposed this tips could apply for cats too.
    I would like to make a question, one of my cats likes to bite fabric, is it something about diet or just that she’s bored or stressed?

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Boredom/play is most likely. Your cat may well just enjoy the texture of fabric. Cats taken from their mother before 8 weeks old can develop suckling behaviour aimed at cloth or hair that can persist for life. A third, and final possibility is that if your cat is male; he is trying to mate with the fabric. Neutered male cats occasionally display a comically confused attempt at mating with textiles.
