In this video we are going to take a tour of the Stolzenfels Castle, situated on the left bank of Upper Middle Rhein near Koblenz. it is one of the remarkable medieval castles in this region which was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO in 2002.
Prince-Bishop of Trier started building this castle in 1242 to fortify and protect a toll center on Rhein where all ships had to stop and pay toll, it was finished in 1259 by Arnold II. of Isenburg.
Over the years it was extended several times, occupied by French and Swedish troops in the Thirty Years' War and finally, in 1689, partly destroyed by the French during the Nine Years' War.
In 1802, it became the property of the city of Koblenz. In 1823, the ruined castle was donated by the city to Prussian Crown-prince Friedrich Wilhelm IV of Prussia.
When Rheinland became a province of Prussia, King Friedrich Wilhelm visited this region and was fascinated by the beauty and history of the region. He took control of this castle and rebuilt and expanded as a Gothic Revival palace. After the first world war this castle became a property of the state Rheinland Pfalz.
At the entrance of the castle there is a ticket counter where you need to buy a 5 Euro ticket to enter the Castle. It consists of small inner and outer courtyards, small garden with fountain and Halls of King, Queen and Knights. There is a terrace facing the Rhein, from where you can enjoy a beautiful view of the city of Lahnstein and Lahneck Castle. Unfortunately Cameras are not allowed inside the rooms of the castle.
Stolzenfels castle with its extensive parks and gardens is one of the outstanding works of Prussian architecture and uniquely preserves the proud history of the Prussian ruling dynasty on the Rhein.
