I'm so glad that you expanded out to The Bronx! Neighbors look out for each other, and the buildings and apartments are enormous, beautiful Art Deco creations!
No mention of Morris Park...I used to walk through Morris Park every day on my way from the 5 train to my workplace. Morris Park is a beautiful neighborhood. The displays on the homes for Halloween and Christmas are stunning.
Very good inside to the borough that is almost as overlooked as Staten Island. It could have been longer but you definitely did some justice. I'm Jamaican-American myself so it was cool to see the best Jamaican/Caribbean restaurants making the real food. Much respect!
I am SOOOO happy you showed The Poe House. I used to play around Poe's house and the surrounding park when I was a little girl. I remember being sooo curious about that house. Always loved it. Thanks so much for this vid! #memories
What he said still exists. The Bronx has come a long way from what it used to be like in the 70's, 80's, & 90's, but the crime & gang violence here is still high, especially in the same places; The South Bronx. & even certain parts in the north side. I used to live in Morrisania & Fordham Heights-like 2 blocks from Poe Cottage. I stayed there for almost 20 years alltogether. But regardless, he's right. The Bronx still is the best borough ever, & you really don't have to leave The Bronx to do the same things that you can do in Manhattan & Brooklyn. It's all here!
Having grown up in the Bronx in the 60's and 70's I saw the last hurrah from the growth from the 30's all the way to the early 60's What happened was Robert Moses, deindustrialization and white flight to the suburbs. These conditions plus globalization contributed to the fall of not only the South Bronx but also Bedford-Stuyvesant, Astoria, Long Island City, Times Square, Washington Heights and Harlem. Not to mention this occurred in cities all over the United States. Cities found themselves in financial trouble and the political power shifted from cities to suburbs; south to north; liberal to conservative and Democratic to Republican. Cities were then remade in the image of the neoliberal technocrats, leaving many middle class and poor families behind. Gentrification and overdevelopment of housing in certain areas are changing the demographics and economics of the borough to something that I no longer recognize nor do I think it beneficial to the long term interests of Bronxites.
The Bronx was always a great place to live. You have the Bronx zoo . The botanical garden. Fordam university. Great delicatessen and other restaurants. I grew up in the bronx from the 50’s to the late 60’s . There was orchard beach, Pelham bay, vancortland park , city island with the best seafood. It changed during the 70’ s . It got kinder rough. Over the last 30 years it has become much cleaner and nicer.
7:06 the boat is chillin...hilarious. Looks like the bronx is one cool place even boats get to chill.. I m glad l lived there when l visited the city pre pandemically. So many beautiful places to see away from the noisy downtown Manhattan
Expat Bronxite. Great videos about an underrated part of NYC. BTW Taste the Island is about 6 blocks from the house Bruno Hauptmann, the kidnaper of the Lindberg Baby, lived. Loved your Artur Ave video. Also, another historical place in The Bronx is Woodlawn Cemetery where many famous people are buried.
The first part was amazing, but this is just as good. I knew Shawn did a good job showing Tal around his borough, but he definitely did a better job showing you around. I always passed through Pelhan Bay Park to go to City Island and Westchester County, but never had time to go. The park looks awesome and I'm ready to chow down on some beef patties and oxtail. The best thing I loved about these videos is the amount of pride Shawn has in his borough. My dad grew up in the South Bronx decades back and of course the area wasn't the best, but I see the borough nowadays as a smaller version of Queens due to the strong Ethnic diversity (Italians, Dominicans, Jamaicans, Mexicans, etc), vast amount of parks (Pelham Bay, Crotona, Van Cortlandt, Barreto Point), and overall history of the borough, especially with music (salsa and hip hop). Badass video you guys!
Loved the videos. I lived in The Bronx most of my life. I left for Florida in 1980 when The Bronx was not the ideal place to raise a child. But thanks for showing how the it's a lot better now.
It’s an interesting range of restaurants and food carts. Maybe you should produce a downloadable PDF with a map and details of the places to visit in each borough?
maybe try the west side of the bronx too! some good eats over there too (bronx ale house is amazing, S&S cheesecake, Lloyd's carrot cake ), and van cortland park is awesome!
Cedar park....River park towers....Roberto Clemente state park...my playground during the early days of hip hop....What a great time to be in.....Priceless!
I grew up in a city that bordered The Bronx and can remember certain areas of The Bronx that were very dangerous in the 1950's, 60's and 70's. At age twelve I remember being taught how to make a .22 caliber "zip gun" pistol by some Bronx friends (pipe, nail and rubber band). Also how to sharpen the buckles on what they called "garrison belts" to inflict major harm to others. Since I didn't live in The Bronx I didn't need to take advantage of either of those survival skills. In the 1980's the south Bronx was akin to a war zone. But even back in those days there were areas of The Bronx that were relatively safe. I haven't lived in New York in decades. Are there still areas that you would not venture into?
Ox tail is my joint glad you guys did this again & after the 1st half of this I did some research Brooklyn is actually the most dangerous part of NYC Bronx comes in 2nd Staten Island is the safest something to think about when the news dumps on Bronx
I think the reason why the media always show all this negativity about the bx is cuz it's one of the only few places in America where 90% of its people are non-white (mostly black and Spanish people) even tho BK is no different when it comes to danger.
Interesting video. This needs a part 3. You also need to see the northwest Bronx (Riverdale/Fieldston, Kingsbridge, Van Cortlandt Park) including wave hill. It is absolutely gorgeous.
Fordham University is an oasis in The Bronx. Take a walk on campus and you're 500 miles away from the city. Bronx Zoo - one of the best zoos in the world Bronx Botanical Gardens - you can't believe you're in the Bronx Arthur Ave - great Italian restaurants Wave Hill - overlooks Hudson River ... great place to look at river and have lunch
This is great. Bronx still gets a bad reputation, but some great areas. Still wouldn't spend a whole lot of time in the 40th after sunset (St. Mary's Park closes at dusk!). Haven't been to Poe Cottage for a while. Before the visitor center was built. Had to go up to the attic to watch some ancient VHS tape about the history. As I recall at some point it was moved from an adjacent lot.
I thought Van Cortlandt Park was bigger than Pelham Bay we got great Parks here St Mary's too on St Ann's Avenue they just recently reconstruct that Park I love the inside pool where I grew up and learn to swim when I was a teenager in junior high school back in the early sixties
If you're ever looking for Beef Patties closer to you check out the truck on 10th street and 5th Ave in Park Slope. Not sure what days they're there but the beef patties is something I enjoy
Great video!! Keep doing videos like this, highlighting the lesser known or traveled parts of NYC. I definitely makes these spots on my Google maps for my next visit.
Yo, I appreciate this. It brought back memories and some truth about the 90s (at least when I lived there). I hope I can come back there to revisit some spots.

Shawn, weird to be in a NY Yankees county & wearing an LA Dodgers cap! By the way, I grew up in Parkchester & graduated from Fordham University (Rose Hill). Love my Bronx roots.
Great video! Still waiting for Shawn's videos. He seems like an interesting person with a lot to offer. Does he need more encouragement? If so, let's get him rolling.
I'm going to NY this April to visit my cousin, who lives in West Harlem. I told her I wanted to visit the bronx because hip hop has been a huge influence in my life.
