I "met" J pod back in '95 before the distance limits were in place with whale-watching boats. They swam right under the boat, looking up at us, investigating everything. It was a spiritual experience I will never forget. This is the true way to see them. Never pay to see them in captivity.

Did this back in 2013 and I would have dreamt of a moment like this. And J Pod is the one Pod I still haven't seen yet.

Majestic beauty! However, I am sure I would want to get out as quickly as possible and enjoy from the land. Lol.

I'm no expert but I've read that each set of color patterning is unique so they photo and study them.

Correct! Each individual Orca is unique an typically has their dorsal fin and saddle patch logged in scientific catalogue for reference. Sometimes on our tour we know the Orcas are coming ahead of time and base of last know location and velocity we can determine if its a similar group that others have reported.

This is the most studied population of whales in the world--each individual is well-known to researchers, and those who study them regularly can ID the pod a long way off.

they are making new rule all bots must st100 feet away. im glad.

The law already requires that all boats stay 300/400 YARDS away from the Southern Residents. But if they come towards a kayak, you can just stay put. You cannot intentionally put yourself in their path. As for the Center for Whale Research boat, pretty sure they are exempted, as they are studying the population.

They did that porpoisly, but then again, maybe it was a fluke of nature.
