- Nikon P1000 Vs Sony RX10 IV - Zooming in on MOON
When it comes to zooming in on the moon, both the Nikon P1000 and the Sony RX10 IV offer impressive capabilities, but they do so in different ways.
Nikon P1000:
The Nikon P1000 is renowned for its exceptional zoom capabilities, boasting an incredible 125x optical zoom lens, which is equivalent to 24-3000mm in 35mm terms.
With such a powerful zoom, you can get incredibly close-up shots of the moon, capturing fine details like craters and surface textures.
The P1000 also features a Moon mode, which optimizes settings for lunar photography, making it easier to capture stunning shots of the moon without having to manually adjust settings.
Sony RX10 IV:
While the RX10 IV doesn't have as extreme zoom capability as the P1000, with a 25x optical zoom (24-600mm equivalent), it still offers a respectable reach.
Where the RX10 IV shines is in its image quality and versatility. It features a larger 1-inch sensor compared to the smaller sensor of the P1000, resulting in better image quality, especially in low light conditions.
Additionally, the RX10 IV's faster autofocus system and continuous shooting capabilities make it easier to capture sharp images of the moon, especially if you're interested in capturing it during phases of movement, such as during lunar eclipses.
In summary, if your primary focus is on extreme zoom capability and getting as close to the moon as possible, the Nikon P1000 might be the better choice. However, if you value image quality and versatility along with a respectable zoom range, the Sony RX10 IV could be a more well-rounded option for lunar photography.

It is very good to see a crop of the image to see the object having the same size!
You would think that P1000 will win because of the better zoom, yet Sony produced by far better image anyway. But there is one thing that I'm not sure about - was P1000 focused properly? I think on some others videos P1000 did better.
By the way, what is up with this sudden jump around 1:31? Video is cut? Did camera made some adjustments automatically?
Also it seems that we could make only a slightly worse pictures of the moon with only pair or binoculars and a smartphone. So given that we could get binoculars for 1/4 of the price of the camera it sound like a better deal honestly.
Camera sensor in a smartphone is probably around the size of the sensor in the Nikon anyway :D
Completely agreed 🙏
Sony much clearer
It's not cleaner, it's sharper. Don't missunderstand glass technical aspects.
@ thank you
That Nikon can definitely get clearer when properly focused, not really fair to compare it set on manual and wrong, the moon is not infinitely far.
Your retardation is strong. Seriously you think "infinity" focus means it only focuses on things that are infinitely far away? Nothing is infinitely far away, so why in your mind does this mode exist? Think about it. If "infinite focus" works the way you think it does, it would literally NEVER be useful. In reality, infinite focus is used all the time in astrophotography, and it's the default focus when you set the Nikon to "moon mode".
I have the P1000 too, I got much sharper moon than that. The focus is likely wrong? Were the pictures taken simultaneously? Could be atmosphere turbulences
Please share the camera settings of yours🙏
@@Pracitcalscience P or S mode, although there's also dedicated Moon mode, but I prefer the normal way. The autofocus works just fine.

I have the Sony for several years now and let me tell you the sharpness and microdetail even at f4 is stunning!
Have you tried Sony with a good quality tele-converter? I'm really upset by the Nikon P1000 image quality. Looks very soft, like missing focus.
Очень маленькая матрица.
@@Dobrynichev not on all tests I've seen on YT. Maybe it's really hard to get focus right?

Moon through naked eyes in the beginning is not true. This is how smartphone usually captures moon. Our eyes see it much bigger and clearer, with all the texture.
Where are the reflectors or the "moon landing" locations? Is the flag still there?
Lol 🤣
We never went to the moon.
I know it's a joke, but Moon's diameter is 3476km, and the resolution of 4K video is 2160px wide, so each pixel of the video represents around 1,6km of surface (around 1 mile). You need at least 10 times more magnification to expect to see something, but be realistic - you need at least 100x more magnification to have a chance to see something on a landing spot (and a very, very calm atmosphere).
@@metalmilo12well, you didn’t!
What camera of the two is best for UFO hunting?
you need a whole telescope for that lol
Aliens phone
rx10 iv, UFO's are fast, and sony wins the autofocus by a lot, it's also much better in low light (remember the moon is LIT and for things that are not, the one inch sensor of the sony will trounce it). Agree with the rest of the comments tho, the nikon shoulda/coulda won this comparison on the moon.
Sony more clear footage
Phones can play with the moon. Do something that matters as match! Jupiter/saturn! Comets. Space station.
Nikon p1000 max zoom is 125x
So>?
The P1000 when photographing a very bright object like the moon can operate at 100 ISO and in this way the difference in quality with a larger sensor is greatly reduced, it does not seem realistic to me that the P1000 which is operating with only the optical zoom can give such a poorly detailed image, there is something wrong, either it is not perfectly focused or the lens of that specimen has some defect, or it is not set well, check the stabilizer, the ISO etc. With the P1000 I take very sharp photos freehand.
Considering the price, the Nikon P1000 is the winner, in my humble opinion.
Yes
I agree bang-for-the-buck, the P1000 wins. But the RX10 has the better image clarity overall, and I have the bucks, so I went with the RX10.
lol, this is the only scenario where the P1000 comes remotely close to the Sony, and even though it still loses it would fare much, much worse on any and all other comparisons. The Sony ma cost twice or three times the price but it is at least three times the better camera.
Thanks for this comparison, almost bought the Nikon based solely on its Zoom.I didn’t think the Sony could handle it,how wrong I was .
Going to purchase the Sony Rx10 4.Thank you 😊
P1000 is discontinued
Should have also mentioned the aperture for the still image. At least in this demonstration, thr RX10M4 produced a much better image even with the 4x crop. The 1-inch type sensor and wider aperture, nearly 2-stop advantage over the P1000, at the long end play a big role in this, no doubt.
I;m guessing, that 4x crop works only in video mode. As a 20mpx sensor, you can simply read the center of the sensor, to get 4k video and 4x crop. That's why a 4x crop still looks excellent. I'ts 1:1 crop from the sensor, when only in optical mode, there is no crop from the sensor.
CORECT. Sony RX10 IV QUALITY IS BEST.
The king of bridge cameras rx10iv , but the budget swiss knife of bridge cameras , the best , easy to use nice sensor is fz1000. model 1 , not model 2 ( the original has better image quality )
Fz1000 2005?
lol, it does not have better image quality. It's the exact same lens and image processing pipeline. The RAW files are exactly the same with the only difference (aside from the improved controls/menu/screen/viewfinder etc on the II) more pleasing colours of in-camera jpegs.
I think the focus on the P1000 is poor, that's why it looks different.
very strange result from p1000. i saw a lot of much better moon video tests with p1000, even much better than sony rx 10 in this test. why such a difference here? even in your previous moon shot p1000 looks better than here
Fun fact: you can add more 8x digital zoom using TH-cam feature
Sony came up far more superior in this video that any other comparisons, I wonder why
PUEDE QUE POR QUE tiene el doble de ISO. Pero la P1000 configurando mejor que en automatico , puede superar lo visto en este video
gg for sony, much better image quality.
But looks like "seeing" is very very good when filming with the Sony. For a fair test you must use both Cameras simultainously!

🎉 Lovely, thank you! ❤
But let's not forget the Nikon's 2x DIGITAL ZOOM as well!
