  • It's the last day ... as we tick off the final stations of the quest and it's a wonderfully scenic journey across the top of Northern Ireland,, taking in breathtaking view as the railway hugs the coast.
    All The Stations - Ireland sees Geoff & Vicki exploring the length and breadth of the 198 stations of Iarnród Éireann and the Northern Ireland Railways networks. Along the way, they'll meet the communities connected to the lines, interview local people and those who work on the railways, to find out about their experiences of travelling by train.
    Download the All The Stations theme tune from iTunes here: itunes.apple.c... (other stores are available...)
    To The Book! "The Railway Adventures" is published by September Publishing and was released in October 2018. It accompanies the 2017 'All The Stations' adventure, when we travelled to all 2,563 railway stations in Great Britain. Available here: www.amzn.com/19...
    You can see a progress map and station count on the website: www.allthestati...

    You would have passed right by the old Magilligan station, between Portrush and Derry/Londonderry. My father lived there for a few years when it was a private house. The platform still exists but no trains stop there anymore.

    I love how you guys just completely avoided saying the name of the final station (198 - tick!)... probably best given the controversy ;)

    • @gazzaman28
      @gazzaman28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      I've heard stories of foreign tourists saying the wrong name when asking locals how to get there, and being told "there is no such place". That's a real shame, cos it's a lovely city, and I guess Translink NI are just being pragmatic calling it Derry-Londonderry.

    • @martinjh999
      @martinjh999 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I was going to ask why they called Derry both Derry and Londonderry...
      I guessed it was something political - So why is it named as it is?

    • @gazzaman28
      @gazzaman28 5 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      @martin - It was originally Derry, but in the 1600s under English King James 1 (Scottish King James VI) it was renamed as Londonderry. Generally speaking Catholics continued to call it Derry and Protestants called it Londonderry, and so how you call it can define your 'side' in the ongoing tensions of NI.

    • @KasabianFan44
      @KasabianFan44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Is there a neutral version?
      I’m tempted to start calling it Derrylondon - the best kind of compromise, leaving both sides unhappy 😉

    • @donaloflynn
      @donaloflynn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@KasabianFan44 The best compromise name is that used to promote its year as City of Culture in 2013, "Legenderry". The local satirical name is "Stroke City", referencing the forward slash which is often used in place of the hyphen used by Translink. The BBC named their local radio station "Radio Foyle" after the city's river to avoid controversy.
      The vast majority of people living on this island (i.e. almost everyone in Ireland plus the nationalist community in Northern Ireland) always have and always will call it Derry and Irish speakers have never put "Londain" and "Doire" together. The success of the TV series "Derry Girls" will undoubtedly lead to more people in Great Britain dropping the London prefix, as the politics of the situation are unlikely to matter to people who are unfamiliar with the place.
      Up to this point I've stuck to the facts and the likely outcome of the spread of the phrase "Derry Girls". However, as an Irishman with strong views on the subject, it would be remiss of me not to give voice to them when the conversation permits. To me, the name Londonderry has always been absurd and reminiscent of a man forcing his strong-willed wife to at the least take on a double-barrelled surname, with his coming first, rather than respecting her wishes to forever be known by her birth name. It's about control and disrespect for what went before.
      The unwieldy hyphenated name is one of the many supposed "compromises" endured by Irish people for the sake of peace. An actual compromise would be to rename the city altogether. People who consider the Irish opinion on the matter to be over-the-top ought to consider how they would feel about living in Parismanchester, Madridswansea or Berlinglasgow. I was born in Ireland's second city and would never stand by and see it renamed Romecork.

    Very good, thanks. I grew up in Derry/Londonderry, or, as it’s also known, Stroke City, and know all these stations very well. City of Derry airport is about 15km from Derry, and when I lived there was known as Eglinton Airport. There were no commercial services then, but light aircraft would use it occasionally. The railway tracks crossed the runway, and occasionally the train would stop while a plane landed. Allegedly the driver was once heard to ask what should happen if he saw a plane coming in to land. Who had right of way?
    The beach at Downhill really is amazing, and the train ride through the two short tunnels under the Mussenden Temple is truly spectacular. The Mussenden Temple was part of a stately home built by Bishop Hervey, the Earl of Bristol, a famously eccentric cleric. The mansion is now derelict, but I remember visiting it as a child when it still had some of the roof on, and going in what had been the wine cellars.
    I had two brilliant years at college in Portrush and frequently walked on the beach there too.

    Okay, wow. That bit on the beachside was a serious blast from the past. I remember seeing that shot from when Michael Palin made that description in "Great Railway Journeys: Derry to Kerry" when I was 4 years old! What made it even more amazing was that, if I'm not mistaken, your music composer wove in some elements of the music from that episode into this segment. Absolutely amazing. Only part that's a shame is that you couldn't get the full Palin experience by completing this section, and your Irish rail journey, on a special steam train. But then, that would have taken a hell of a lot of arranging and the loco "Slieve Gullion" that Palin rode behind is down for restoration anyway.

      Once the East Coast is covered there would be hours and hours between stations. In a country that's primarily freight based rail passenger service has been on the back burner for eons. Really not much to see as far as stations go. Germany or France would be my pick for a next destination.

I've ticked all the stations, Britain, Ireland (N & S), Isle of Man, Norway, Portugal, Alaska, Monaco, and nearly all of Canada, most of France, Hungary, Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and large chunks of Italy, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Slovenia, New York State, Connecticut, Mass., New Hampshire and Vermont, plus bits of the Ukraine, Poland, Spain, Austria, Croatia, Sweden, Czech Republic and Slovakia. But some mates have ticked all the stations in over 60 countries.

    Congratulations to you both. I enjoyed seeing all the stations on this island. I was hoping Translink would have let you into the future Derry Station being constructed so that you could have ticked that off the list too. The Derry Public voted for Translink to repurchase and reuse one of the cities old Victorian stations instead of building a brand new one like they wanted. Although they wont run the trains back inside the building like they did in the past. It was Lucky the old one was up for sale at that time that it became one of the options. Plus sometimes that train also has to stop near City of Derry Airport for flights, as it runs right beside the end of the runway. Although doesn't happen to often as there isn't many flights from that airport. I don't know if they still have to check with the flight tower just encase every time they pass.

    I actually watched all the episodes of an All the Stations. Now I have to get back on the original (fell off right around Scotland). Now that you're done, what'll be next? Going to America would cost too much and take too much time, and the rail sucks here, anyway (though maybe a documentary would pump up hype for it...?). I don't know anything about the Channel Islands, the Hebrides, the Shetlands, or the Orkneys, but they should definitely be next. Maybe "All the Stations: Islands"? I don't know if they even have any trains. Otherwise, definitely the Isle of Man, as someone else has said, and then maybe the Low Countries, France, and so on? Whatever it'll be, I'm sure I'll love it, and I can't wait!
    Thank you Geoff, Vicki, the editors, the Kickstarter backers, all the guests, and the Irish rail companies! I can't wait to see you guys later on All the Stations!

    So where to next? Switzerland for the scenery (and the legendary punctuality)? Might need a few more backers to get you there though. The Netherlands, nice and compact, just 400 stations and most services running at least twice an hour, most more frequently. Belgium, smaller still, but I hear mixed stories about punctuality (or really the lack thereof). Luxembourg can be done in a day, I think. Germany, is just very large, with a lot of lines. Some of them are really pretty though. Norway, also very pretty, very expensive, and very long rides, same for Sweden. And the Trans-Siberian expres is just a class of its own, but then all the stations in Russia?

    I looked up how many stations there are in Switzerland and it isn't so bad - about a thousand - but then there are all the perfectly regular (not preserved railways) that run on the narrow gauge. It's complicated.
    Oh! You've finished? Now what are we going to do, without All the Stations? Seriously though guys, thank you so much for providing so many little moments of joy and fun, along with giving us a whole new view of Ireland. It's beautiful - all of it - all of Ireland.

    Great video, undoubtedly Ireland's coast is beautiful. I would think that the ride on the Coast Starlight south California has some greatest ocean views also. Take the trip sometime please.

    BallyMOANey? Now that made my partner from there laugh. :)
    Lovely to see you do a journey that's one of my favourite in the world and see you and Vicki love the views of Benone Strand so much. It's a great surfing beach. Also had several land speed records set on it, too.

    Fantastic view and great footage of the train along the coast. I recall Michael Palin doing this run behind a steam locomotive. Beautiful Scenery. Thanks for taking us on a great journey.

    Thank you Geoff and Vicki for a great series. Heres a new challenge for you. I grew up just yards away from the great central railway in Leicester and still remember the trains running on the long lost line. Parts of it still remain, Loughborough to Leicester north , for example. How about '' all the revived stations'' a historical trip along all of Britains restored lines, steam railways and dis-used relics.
