Lots of good people join the military but there are some who just want to do the worst things you can imagine and get away with those actions because of their uniforms.

There is a reason why the military in many countries is not allowed to do policing actions. It is not only a difference in mindset and training, but also in principle / rule of law. That said, the police also screws up frequently historically when it comes to the use of lethal and non-lethal violence.
@@stumblingfalk yeah you're right on that, but also that soldiers nowadays are trained on being lethal. Humans aren't very good at killing, so a reflex has to be trained in
On the point! The same can be said for the famous SAS Operation to free the hostages from the Iranian embassy. That's what happens when you send highly trained soldiers to save the hostages, it is more likely that people (especially the perpetrators of the hostage taking) end up dead rather than arrested.

I'm from Germany, so far right and especially far left terrorism during the 1970s was quite common, but the south mollucan terrorism in the neighbouring Netherlands as a result of mainly failed decolonialisation and integration seemed quite interesting to me and is still relevant today.

It's a bit of a 50/50. Some things are 'risk as part of the job'. A burglar in the United States has the risk of getting shot. Just the way it is. You won't easily get shot in the Netherlands, but hijacking a train and taking that many people hostage for that many days? Eh...
@snowballeffect7812 Nothing I said excuses the eventual action taken by the marines. To answer your question, if you're taken hostage by armed gunmen, is your initial thought that this is going to end well? Regardless, you threw up a strawman. It's not someone's "job" to be a hostage. Not talking about that "risk implied within the job".
If I'm remembering right, and you're willing to learn, Dutch is one of the closest if not the closest language to English amoung both the Germanic languages as well as European languages as a whole. In comparison it should be relatively easy to learn as a native English speaker!
The hijackers committed a violent act against innocent civilians, by choosing that path they are nothing more than terrorists. I understand they were angry with the government but those people on that train had not done them any harm
Around 30:00 you show these 2 interviews of the marines as if they oppose eachother. But they don't. One is saying the concept of aiming for the legs is naieve because things happen too fast. You don't have time to judge when someone looks to be readying their weapon towards you. The other is saying that he wants to not shoot if the person is unarmed. Both mentalities would have been held by both parties. These men had the same opinions.
While I do appreciate what you were trying to do by telling the story of Moloccan people and the hijacking in parallel, honestly it made it really hard to tell what was going on in some parts 😅 If you try something like this again, I would recommend making it more clear when you’re switching between the two, and having longer “chunks” of story before you switch back. I also do have to ask if telling these in parallel was necessarily the best decision? Because personally, I thought the story would’ve been a lot more powerful if you had told the entire story of the Moloccan people first so that there was a background to understand the highjacking. I do always admire trying new ways to convey ideas, but I feel like this wasn’t the best story to do this with.
To be frank, many govt wouldn’t even bother trying the rescue or would just take everyone out, or even have citizens that would attempt this bcs they know the govt would just laugh at demands. They would more likely just attempt revolution.
1977 what did you expect. Now we have advanced camera's with drones and police that are well trained with the right equipment. Did the marines even had protection?
The video credits voice actors, so not sure why you thought they were AI? I know this channel is available on Nebula and they have a strict 'no AI' policy, so I doubt they were AI, given the long list of voice actors credited and that policy from Nebula...
@@sasi6897 Unfortunately, the video itself clearly shows "AI Voice" for certain parts -- so.... some may be voice actors but others seem to not have been.
i can understand the goverment actions and acceptance of deaths somewhat due to the previous hijacking in 1975 but that does not mean this isnt just a other incident in a long list in the betrayal of dutch and thet indonesians from java who betrayed their fellow indonesians the whole thing was a mess our goverment was under a lot of pressure from the americans too to keep good relations with the java goverment in the fear they would turn to the soviet union but that still doesnt exuse the actions of all parties the dutch should have not used so much violence in indonesia and accept we lost the moluccans should accept they chose the wrong side and lost altho in the end i believe they remain the closest to being inocent off all the parties involved and are the only ones who can actualy lay a claim on inocence the indonesians should not have betrayed their own people they became colonizers much like us altho we dutch cant realy say something about that now can we america could and should have done more they kicked the dutch out in the end because they knew what was best and fair enough what we were doing was wrong in every way but that does not exuse the things they let the goverment on java get away with but we all know how america was in that time who cares who gets betrayed as long as communism dont win everything goes the whole situation between ww2 and the 1980's was a mess mistakes were made crimes commited people betrayed by all parties involved (also dont think i forgot about the brittish in the early years after ww2 their hands are not totaly clean in this situation either) but i hope with time that the relationships with all parties will improve and that we learn from the mistakes of the past
What the hikackers did was terrible, taking hundreds kf innocent people hostage. I think a lot of people are missing one of rhe points the video is trying to make. These were people that wanted to go back to their homeland and were unable to, and were also unable to obtain employment in the country they grew up in. When you put a group of people in that kind of situation and ignore their peaceful protests to be treated like human beings, they are more likely become desperate and resort to terrorism. The way the dutch and Indonesian governments treated the Moloccan people is shameful. I can see a lot of parallels in the modern day. Maybe if instead of restricting visas or employment based on where someone was born or what language they spoke, countries treated everyone with dignity and respect, the world would be a much more peaceful place
this story is just one of countless examples of a country's history of imperial colonialism continuing to cause pain and suffering into the modern day. a truly heartbreaking tale.
So is the moral of this story that the Dutch government should be sorry that it killed terrorists that took random uninvolved civilians and children hostage? If you take people hostage, you lose all rights afforded by law until the hostages are returned and you no longer pose a threat. The main responsibility of the state is to secure the safety of innocent civilians even at the expense of all the hostile actors (and even some of the innocents if it outweighs the alternatives of inaction). If you’re saying the government could’ve done better planning to protect the hostages then ok. But if you’re saying the government and the marines should have put the terrorist’s lives over those of the hostages and the marines themselves is asinine.
Shooting an unarmed or wounded person that isn't a treat is a warcrime. I know rules of war don't apply in this case but at least 12 bullet holes per person is realy excessive Btw. only for the armed person near the hostages there was a reason to shoot and he wasn't killed but multiple hostages where none of the shots fired by him. Furthermore, the proven executions are completely unneccecary and the government covering it all up for about 30 years shows they knew they where in the wrong. Overall your open disregard for human life that you show in this comment disgusts me and if that is realy what you think you should get help.
she got shot and was dying already, calling her mama. i'd say that is an "observable manner of surrender", yet she got 40 bullet wounds and burn marks from close contact with the revolver.

It's a bit of a 50/50. Some things are 'risk as part of the job'. A burglar in the United States has the risk of getting shot. Just the way it is. You won't easily get shot in the Netherlands, but hijacking a train and taking that many people hostage for that many days? Eh...
so the hostages should have expected to be shot and take grenade shrapnel? lol.
“Their legs go up to their necks”. Hahaha now that’s some funny sht to say!
The longest? El Al Flight 426 lasted almost twice as long.
Is that book available as an English audio book? If only every American could speak Dutch like how most Dutch speak pretty good English.
Volgende video over de schoolkaping!
I have no sympathy for them honestly. They held random people hostage. Only an evil mind can do that
The belanda hitam were mostly made up of West African troops from the Asante Empire
The way our government treated the Molukkers was awful, truly ashaming
Around 30:00 you show these 2 interviews of the marines as if they oppose eachother. But they don't.
One is saying the concept of aiming for the legs is naieve because things happen too fast. You don't have time to judge when someone looks to be readying their weapon towards you.
The other is saying that he wants to not shoot if the person is unarmed.
Both mentalities would have been held by both parties. These men had the same opinions.
Wild!
It all fell apart when they replaced the BBE with Marines. They're not interchangeable.
Ah the marines took the Fuze approach to hostage rescue
i am dutch and i am always proud of the dutch army but. how the handeld this situation..... to many hostage are killed that day
They hijacked a train with kids inside who cares if they were unarmed?
good vid
It was Holland, it was the 1970s.
Was just watching documentaries yesterday about this! Now i have more to check niceeeee
This is horrific, but my government does this to people in their own home countries. USA dehumanizes everyone they subjugate
While I do appreciate what you were trying to do by telling the story of Moloccan people and the hijacking in parallel, honestly it made it really hard to tell what was going on in some parts 😅
If you try something like this again, I would recommend making it more clear when you’re switching between the two, and having longer “chunks” of story before you switch back.
Looking back there was maybe a bit too much back and forth switching. Would change that in a next one!
Germans and Dutch really suck at rescue missions don't they? Really wouldn't want either country to send people to rescue me.
en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lufthansa_Flight_181
To be frank, many govt wouldn’t even bother trying the rescue or would just take everyone out, or even have citizens that would attempt this bcs they know the govt would just laugh at demands. They would more likely just attempt revolution.
@ even their best rescue means you might get injured lol
1977 what did you expect. Now we have advanced camera's with drones and police that are well trained with the right equipment. Did the marines even had protection?
that's nothing. have you seen the israelis at it?
Those tapes sound like they're playing COD
As a Dutch man, where did you this information come from? Yes, I ever heard this story long time ago.
Check the description. He puts sources there
What are the AI voices based on? Did you decide what these people are supposed to sound like?
Well, the texts are translated so it wouldn't sound like the original in any case.
Thank the government for saving some tax money. Less money on trials & imprisonment.
i can understand the goverment actions and acceptance of deaths somewhat due to the previous hijacking in 1975
but that does not mean this isnt just a other incident in a long list in the betrayal of dutch and thet indonesians from java who betrayed their fellow indonesians
the whole thing was a mess our goverment was under a lot of pressure from the americans too to keep good relations with the java goverment in the fear they would turn to the soviet union
but that still doesnt exuse the actions of all parties
the dutch should have not used so much violence in indonesia and accept we lost
the moluccans should accept they chose the wrong side and lost altho in the end i believe they remain the closest to being inocent off all the parties involved and are the only ones who can actualy lay a claim on inocence
the indonesians should not have betrayed their own people they became colonizers much like us altho we dutch cant realy say something about that now can we
america could and should have done more they kicked the dutch out in the end because they knew what was best and fair enough what we were doing was wrong in every way but that does not exuse the things they let the goverment on java get away with but we all know how america was in that time who cares who gets betrayed as long as communism dont win everything goes
the whole situation between ww2 and the 1980's was a mess mistakes were made crimes commited people betrayed by all parties involved (also dont think i forgot about the brittish in the early years after ww2 their hands are not totaly clean in this situation either)
but i hope with time that the relationships with all parties will improve and that we learn from the mistakes of the past
What a disaster.
this story is just one of countless examples of a country's history of imperial colonialism continuing to cause pain and suffering into the modern day. a truly heartbreaking tale.
But if you’re saying the government and the marines should have put the terrorist’s lives over those of the hostages and the marines themselves is asinine.
bro they threw a handgrenade in a room with hostages. at that point they are terrorists themselfs
Yeah, they could've and should've taken more precautions to stop the hostages from being shot. Like not using a grenade in an enclosed room.
The government has a duty to tell the truth. That's what I took from the video.
Shooting an unarmed or wounded person that isn't a treat is a warcrime.
I know rules of war don't apply in this case but at least 12 bullet holes per person is realy excessive
Btw. only for the armed person near the hostages there was a reason to shoot and he wasn't killed but multiple hostages where none of the shots fired by him.
Furthermore, the proven executions are completely unneccecary and the government covering it all up for about 30 years shows they knew they where in the wrong.
Overall your open disregard for human life that you show in this comment disgusts me and if that is realy what you think you should get help.
@@takuyo3215 they followed rules of engagment they were not clearly surrending causing them to get shot to bad to sad
It was execution!
Great video 36:22
This is like crap in Russia.
This whole operation was a joke lmao. How do you kill this many innocent people??? LMAO
Hansina was unarmed.....so what? Hansina was a hijacker, so she gets her lights switched off. Excellent documentary
Don't be like that.
she got shot and was dying already, calling her mama. i'd say that is an "observable manner of surrender", yet she got 40 bullet wounds and burn marks from close contact with the revolver.
Fair point. Then don't lie about it. Own that choice -- why did the Marines lie?
