    Your mind will be blown when you hear Chris Squire from YES. He was a long time inspiration of Geddy's. When YES was inducted into the hall of fame, Chris had recently passed. The band had Geddy play bass for Chris when they played at the ceremony.

    According to Peart, when asked if there was any message he was trying to convey: "No. It was just a flash. I was working on an entirely different thing when I saw a cartoon picture of these trees carrying on like fools. I thought, 'What if trees acted like people?' So I saw it as a cartoon really, and wrote it that way. I think that's the image that it conjures up to a listener or a reader. A very simple statement."

    • @steev11
      @steev11 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      That was Neil’s sanitized response. This was written when he was highly into Ayn Rand. Around the time of this album’s release he gave an interview and really went off on an Ayn Rand rant. Well the media didn’t take to well to it. A Rolling Stone writer attacked him and the band calling them Nazis, which is ridiculous being that Geddy’s parents are Jewish Holocaust survivors. To my knowledge he never really openly talked about Objectivism again. In the Behind The Lighted Stage documentary he downplayed the Ayn Rand influences and claimed to be a bleeding heart libertarian. I LOVED THAT. That went over most everyone’s head. Bleeding Heart is usually associated with liberals. It takes on a different meaning when “Bleeding Heart” is put in front of Libertarian. What does that mean? Think about it. It is someone who cares or feels empathy for others but not with the barrel of a gun pointed at their head. They do it of their own freewill and are not compelled by force to do it. It is Neil outsmarting those that would seek to destroy him. Knowing Neil’s mindset when he wrote this it was a nod to Ayn Rand however the last line of the song leaves it up to the listener to decide whether or not he really means it is a “Nobel” law or if he is being flippant and sarcastic. You decided.

    Yes, I believe its about people's natural abilities. The only way to equalize people (or trees) is to chop them down to the same height. Losing the top of society to equality... if we apply to life, we will lose the "top" our society. The artists, the thinkers, the business leaders,... will all be "equalized"...

      @Shallex Agreed. We're experiencing this exact phenomena now. The "have nots" are pissed at those that take responsibility for their actions. Law abiding citizens that work hard to provide for their families. Success, especially financial, is simply a by product of that responsibility. Our institutions are teaching kids to rebel against our societies capitalist interest in private property and ownership. Socialism and communism through anarchy is rewarded by professors and liberal politicians so naturally they vote to cut down the successful just to make themselves feel better. The lyrics from this song should be required reading starting in grade ONE!!!

      It's all a myth. All people have a skill(s) and talents, but they rarely are explored because society has a great leveling device call public schools with teach boredom for most. The elite use public schools and other things to level the rest. What is needed is not destruction of the elite(because we will always have them), but limiting their government protected status of intellectual property, copyright, corporate protection, and promoting more competition. As GK Chesterton said, the problem with Capitalism isn't too many, but too few.

  • @johnnelson3869

  • @flip97gt
    @flip97gt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Necromancer is one of their hidden gems and most underrated songs. If you could write The Lord of the Rings trilogy into a song, it would be that one. It's early Rush, so it pulls no punches and jams out hard. It's a lengthy three-part song that tells a story, but it's worth it. Neil narrates the story line, Geddy sings and Alex's guitar work is phenomenal.

  • @ElDuderino716
    @ElDuderino716 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    One of the things about this song is that not only are the lyrics deep, but because there’s only THREE MEMBERS, each one MUST contribute, and Geddy’s bass is just as out front as Alex’s guitar and Neil’s drums.

    This song is the 3rd of the 4 songs off my personal favorite Rush album, "Hemispheres." It is definitely a metaphorical tune about society and politics. Much along the same line as the book, "Animal Farm" by George Orwell. This was released 42 years ago in 1978! The album is the last in the heavy prog rock phase of Rush. Also the final concept record until their final studio album, "Clockwork Angels" released 5 years ago in 2015. You have barely scratched the surface of the vast Rush studio catalog. How about that middle instrumental part? Alex's sumptuous arpeggios that set up the smokingly melodic solo is the BEST part of the entire song. He really used effects so masterfully here. It feels fresh every time I listen to it. And the way the percussion and bass accentuate it. Lovely!

    Thanks for the Rush reaction on my birthday, the only way it would’ve been better is if you would’ve reacted to Headlong Flight. Keep it up my brother.

    Okay glancing at the comments, I don’t see any mention of the metaphor of Britain/British Empire as the Oaks lording over the Maples which clearly represent Canada 🇨🇦 ☺️

    Neil was a big fan and follower of Ayn Rand. She was a writer and philosopher from Russia that came to the US in the 50's. Check out some of her work, its pretty dope! A lot of Rush's lyrics are influenced by her work.

    Hey Jay Rah, Good one, as only Rush can do it. It most likely has to do with equality, which in a perfect world we all would be, but, sadly, the powers that be won't allow that as it would surely go against their agenda, keeping the people at bay. I've already said to much. Get some winks my Brother. All the best, C.

    You are hitting all the classics. I see you have a few newer ones coming (40 yrs to go through) or albums 1976-2012.
    Look at “Far Cry”, “BU2B” and “Freeze” from their last three albums. Aka, the return after 6 year break due to the death of Neil’s daughter and wife.

    This is off of Hemispheres, the 1st music that I ever bought with my own money, so this was my 1st favorite Rush song. My tastes have evolved a bit since 1989, but I still love it.
