I can't believe I used to be so intimidated to even try and grow alocasia corms, in my experience it's so easy and very high success rate!
I find alocasia corms love fluval stratum and sprout rally fast in this medium. The key is to keep them warm and very high humidity!

I'm curious to know what type of allergic reaction one would have? I'm asking because I had an unexplainable allergic reaction. I'm now believing it may have been my elephant ear that I recently purchased. I handled it with bare hands. At the time, I wasn't aware this could happen.

That might very well have been it. They contain oxalate crystals, that can provoke an allergic reaction. Usually it is just if ingested, or in contact with sap, but if you are very allergic, just contact with the plant itself might be enough. I imagine that they might contain some other active chemicals as well, possibly differing from species to species, going on what was said in this video about Black Velvet specifically provoking a reaction.
If that was what happened, you might need to be careful with philodendron as well, as they also contain oxalate crystals.
But gloves and possibly long sleeves if handling a big plant should do it. Be careful not to touch the outside of the gloves when removing them. (I'm allergic to all sorts of stuff, and accidentally touching the outside of a glove with something icky on it suuucks! )

Helloo I'm just wondering how these turned out and if you have an update? 🤘🏼I've been growing some for 5 months now I've got 13 and some are starting to get their second leaves but I need to repot and I don't know what to use. I'm using fruval statum atm . But I'm worried leca will damage their rooots, Do you have any ideas☺️x

I had the same reaction last night with alocasia silver dragon. I just washed my hands very long and put hand sanitizer and the itchiness went away. I used leca for my corms, this is my first time doing this. Very exciting. Do you know if I should add water to my leca cups? I just had them washed and soaked then removed it and it was just wet when I added the corms. I covered with another cup and it’s moist inside, is this enough? Any tips are appreciated! 😊

I wonder if it's just more potent on that variety?

Do you rinse your fluval first?

    • @jessicabellone913

Yes you are supposed to rinse fluval stratum before using it. It also states it on the bag it comes in.

Would it be bad to dip the tip of corms in growth powder?

Not a bad idea. I'm curious if anyone has tried this before.

it was the worst itch/burn ever! Gloves make it harder but I don't want that reaction again ha
