Tobacco Pipe Filters Explained

  • Some info on 'popular' tobacco pipe filters, and what I use. There are other filter styles that I have not covered, but these are the most popular. 9mm filters work the best, because of the wider opening.

    From an 'old-timer' pipe smoker, this is a pretty good introductory...but some detail was left out...the Kohle are 6-mm, but are different length than the Medico...which can replace a Dr. Grabow 6-mm. Kohle work in Savinelli pipes (6-mm style), where Grabow and Medico have to be trimmed to fit in Savinelli (and other European filtered pipes). Most Turkish Meerschaum pipes either are 'no filter' or are Dr. Perl 9mm types. Dr Perl Juniors are 9-mm with active charcoal filtering, and give you the best 'true tobacco taste' while also filtering the best AND absorb the most water (important to a lot of 'aromatic tobacco' smokers who like a 'wet' tobacco, but don't like the gurgle). Most 6-mm 'filters' aren't even filters...inside, it's just a bunch of 'paper fingers' that help prevent large tobacco pieces from coming up to the stem tip...while 9mm filters are designed and work almost like a cigarette filter does...
    Hope this helps 'new pipe affectionados'....

    Awesome video. I started pipe smoking about 4 days a go. The first day I burn my tounge.. I did not give up, because I know many people enjoy pipes, and it's must be a way to not get "injured" while smoke a pipe.. then I go to my local cigar shop, where the guy recommended a filter for me.. since that, I use them, and I enjoy the pipe much much more! if you want to go oldschool, and classy, don't use them. If you have a really expensive, exclusive tobacco, don't use them, but for an every day normal tobacco, I recommend to use a filter!

    Hadn't seen this one yet and really glad I found it. Like you, I ordered the 6mm charc filters from abroad (not here yet) but neither the seller nor I were 100% sure they'd fit my Savinellis. After measuring the Savs filter chambers I was fairly confident they would but the info in your vid confirmed it. I use 9mm's in my Stanwells and you're EXACTLY right about charc filters "defining" the tobacco's taste. I use them mainly for aromatics and not so much for English blends. Great vid! Dave

    Very good Video on Filters I have to say, should be watched by more people. But one thing I wanted to mention is that you need to look for a good seal in the stem when you put in a filter. Some filter chambers have a cone at the inside so you can push the filter in and it seats and seals the filter perfect. If it hasn't got a cone and the chamber is too wide you can wrap a layer of kitchen or toilet paper around the filter so that it fits. Or with the Vauen Dr. Perl Junior you can push in the blue cap a small bit, with a pipetool for example and then you can, also with a pipetool, flare out the paper of the filter itself to make it seat and seal. That's what I always do when I'm outside or when I'm too lazy to go and get some paper.

    • @FatBastardPipes
      @FatBastardPipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you, good advise. Usually the paper filters absorb moisture and expand and create a better seal. Cheers.

    although I love the throat hit, taste and puffy smoke of non filtered, the waterfall and tongue burn are just not worth it. if you want more flavor and strength, use wood. if you want a smoother more mellow puff, use charcoal filters.

    Hi there good sir!! Great video. I tried today for the first time with a filter. I think it took away the flavour a bit. But that may have been in my head. 9mm charcoal filter. In a new savinelli. It came with the balsa wood so will try it next with some aromatic blends to see if it affects. I think I will order filtered pipes from now regardless, for the health aspect. And the dryer smoke !

    Smoking a pipe since 1993. I just make my own out of rolled paper or small pieces of balsa (buy an entire sheet from the hobby store for a fee dollars). I have never used them to "filter," more just to eliminate moisture. Make them yourself and they are infinitely customizable.

    I always smoke with balsa filter to help control moisture and ash. I tend to avoid charcoal filter since a lot of people say these can trap some flavours, not sure if it's true though.

    @chrishornsby13 No, usually the hole is too small. But, I either don't buy non filtered pipes, or if I do buy non-filtered, I make sure I can convert them to filtered by either enlarging the the tenon (if its thick enough) and shank holes, or completely changing the tenon.

  • @vincentgiordano-nv4uu
    @vincentgiordano-nv4uu 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    what do you do when you buy a pipe that are too small to fit the 6mm filter?

    • @FatBastardPipes
      @FatBastardPipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is the pipe made to fit a 6mm filter? If yes, but the fit is tight, maybe you can enlarge the hole using a 6mm drill bit. Check ebay, you can sometimes find smaller filters.

  • @FatBastardPipes
    @FatBastardPipes  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tylenator552 Get a filtered pipe. Preferably 9mm, it will cut down on the nicotine and even though you (and I) puff fast, the filter provides a constant resistance, which slows down the burning.

    @JohnsonJB80 No specific seller. Search eBay, you can find good deals, usually if the cost is around $15 per 100 filters, its good, brands to look for are Vauen, Peterson, Denicotia/Blitz and Big Ben. Avoid Chinese sellers however.

  • @FatBastardPipes
    @FatBastardPipes  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    @tylenator552 That one can not. Not all pipes can use filters, the tenon has to be made to take either a 9mm or 6mm filter. Usually you can drill it and fit a filter, if the tenon is thick enough.

    @Baccybandit Thank you. I do have a DB pipe. It is very good! Vauen also makes nice pipes. 9mm filters are less obstructive and its almost like smoking a non-filtered pipe. Many folks don't like filters, but it does enhance the tobacco flavor by blocking some of the bitter tar taste.

  • @joekollodge

    I have trouble finding a good pipe that fits 9mm filters. All the tobacco stores have cheap pipes that will work, but when I try to find name brand pipes like Savinelli they rarely list what filter size will fit the pipe. Do you know any good pipes that will fit the 9mm filter? Also have you ever come across any pipes with more than one filter?

    • @FatBastardPipes
      @FatBastardPipes  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best way to find quality filtered pipes is to buy them from online stores. Also filtered pipes are more popular in Europe so it's a bit harder to find nice filtered pipes in the US, but it's not impossible. I make custom pipes that fit 9mm filters per customer request. I have not seen pipes that use two different size filters, however most 6mm and 9mm Savinelli pipes can use either balsa wood or charcoal filters. A great place to buy filtered pipes online is the Danish Pipe Shop (Denmark). The best I have found in the US are Pipes and Cigars dot com, Outwest Tobacco and Cup'o'Joes.

    Hello there, I recently bought a box of the white elephant 6mm filters off of eBay and they don't fit into the 2 Savinelli's I own (I can't get the stem flush with the shank with a filter in)... have you ever had this problem before? Thanks

    • @FatBastardPipes
      @FatBastardPipes  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My Savinelli pipes were purchased around the time I made this video, and the 6mm elephant filters fit fine... The filter doesn't create a gap. However newer pipes may have shorter filter holes, or tapered holes, so the filter doesn't go down all the way. You can use a sharp drill bit the size of the filter and shave off a few millimeters into the tenon (filter hole) to make the filter go down further. Don't use a power drill however, you can do it by hand.

      I had the same issue, with my Savinelli 320KS. But is fixable. I cut about 5mm out of the filter( White Elephant-both Natur Meerschaum and Aktiv Carbon), then unwrap the paper from the cut end to release the ceramic cap, toss out a bit of the carbon or meerschaum little pieces, and then after just flaring a bit the open filter edge towards outside press the ceramic head on the shorter remaining filter between my fingers or against the table. Works perfect.

      For charcoal filters, the filter makers say change it every smoke, not really necessary. I change it every few smokes. Let the filter dry out in between smokes, and you should be fine. I mainly use filters to reduce moisture, so I let it dry. Paper filters, you should change every smoke.

    • @FatBastardPipes
      @FatBastardPipes  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is basically all these filters are for, to reduce moisture, which is one of the problems that could make pipe smoking unpleasant. However, some amount of tar and nicotine do get absorbed by the charcoal and meerschaum particles that are in the filters. When cleaning I have noticed that my unfiltered pipe stems get much dirtier than my filtered pipes.

      James Kuo They recommend changing the filter after 4-5 smokes. But I usually change the filter after 1 or 2 long smokes. They get brown and absorb a lot of moisture, so I change them quick. Filters are quite cheap so no reason to keep using dirty ones.
