What is the Limited Quantity Exception?

The Hazardous Materials Regulations of the USDOT include an exception for HazMat packaged as a Limited Quantity. The purpose of this video is to identify and explain the Limited Quantity Exception to the HMR.

It is. If you pack and offer for them for transport as a limited quantity per 49 CFR 173.306(i).

for shipping fully regulated via ups, ie, no limited quant. exception, do you need to have a contract with ups or be approved?

That quantity of dangerous good is eligible for the Ltd Qty exception - if other conditions are met. By ground w/i the U.S. the LQ mark is required to be displayed on the package. There is more. Perhaps you should contact me by email with more specific questions.

The gross package weight of a limited quantity must not exceed 30 kg. Gross package weight includes the weight of the HazMat and the packaging, and any other absorbents, dividers, &etc. In short: the weight of the entire package.

@@yasemin3694 No. A specification packaging (the UN Standard) is not required for a HazMat shipped as a limited quantity.

So I know the shipper doesn’t have to placard the freight if it’s ltd but how about if the freight weighs more than 1001 lbs? Does the driver then have to placard the trailer since it exceeds the legal placard weight requirement?

Good question. A limited quantity is not subject to the placarding requirements regadless of the quantity. Even 10,001 lbs of a limited quantity of a HazMat does not require the display of placards on the vehicle.
