Cal, I've A L W A Y S been told when you think your going slow enough. Go S L O W E R ! ! ! B U T.... I mainly target Koke's with Trout tossed in as a bonus catch. I do speed up, and then shift into neutral that's when I get the STRIKE on the S L O W down. I've chased planter Coho at speeds of 4 - 5 MPH with great success at Riffe Lake in Wa. I will say the tug when you are moving that fast is AMAZING!!! Almost always will bend the rod to the water. Pretty E X C I T I N G !!! Tight Lines My Friend.
Good point Cal. I do think you have to match the lure to the speed though. Some lures might not move properly if trolled too fast. I think this is obvious but you didn't cover it. A flatfish comes to mind. I also fish out of a kayak so if I speed troll and have little success, I might slow down with a flatfish for a while. Maybe that is more about taking a break then it is about catching fish though....lol.....but I have had some amazing surprise outings with the old trusted flatfish after a morning of striking out trolling fast spoons.
That is a Hobie Pro Angler 14...It's a couple years old now, so I don't have the 360 drive....It's been an awesome unit...My wife Gena has a Compass...It's 14 feet long, but doesn't have the width or the capacity of my Pro Angler....I went for the 14 over the 12 for two reason...First, I like to take my dog along...Lucy goes about 70 pounds....Second I use the kayak for both hunting and camping so the extra capacity of the 14 is just what the doctor ordered.....
