I have worked in the horticultural industry for around twenty five years including in plant nurseries and garden centres where I bought the houseplants in from suppliers in Holland etc. I just wanted to say that I really admire you for setting up on your own and I appreciate you sharing your experience.
This is honestly the best video I've seen about the process of opening and running a small plant shop (or ANY shop)! Thank you SO much for sharing your experience. You really covered everything! 💚
I think this is one of your best vlogs. Wife and I now have a very successful online store, even though we still have our day jobs. I listened to this as I cycled today and I laughed and smiled all the way through as we've been there, done that God gone through and we're still here.
Ive wanted a little bit of extra pocket money so very recently actually ive been gearing up on my setup. I bought a sturdy 5 tier shelf, some shop lights, ive taken so so many propogations. Im just gonna be a basic aroid Etsy shop eventually branching out into more fun things. I took up a side job just so i could splurge on rare plants recently. I got a second Monstera Albo cutting with a high variegation, and three types of monstera Adansonii; Indonesian Mint, Aurea, and Albo cuttings. Im gonna use every trick in the book to grow these out A.S.A.P and eventually start selling some cuttings of my own.
Claire, I love your videos. I have absorbed and learned so much that has lent me more confidence and ideas as I play with my own plants and propagation. It looks like you are potting up string of pearls water propagations? What propagation methods or media do you like to use to propagate strings of things?
Really enjoyed the long chat and all your tangents! About half of people learn best in a kind of roundabout way or through seeing other people so it, so don't worry. The right people will get you and understand you completely :) I've always had plants, like trailing ivy everywhere as a teen -- but now that I'm in my first own apartment, I brought lots of tropical houseplants in and of course now I need to deal with pests! So I'm learning all I can to care for the plants in the best way. I found you through your thrips video yesterday... Yes I finally know the name of the little bugs on half of my plants, uh oh that sounds like a challenge... But we conquered the gnats too so we've got this :) Sorry, now I'm rambling too -- really I just wanted to thank you for your videos and letting us in on your life like this! ❤️
Just came across your video. Brilliant! You are so beautiful inside and out. I haven’t yet opened a plant shop but like you I had/have so many ambitious ideas. Answering all those questions came at the proper time for me. Loads to think about. Thank you so much! I paused the video and popped over to your Instagram page. Beautiful as well. I am now subscribed on TH-cam and following on Instagram. You helped me feel so much better when you said that you’ve dealt with times where your heart just was not into plant care for the moment. A bit of burnout. But when you push through you find the joy in it all over again. I get that. I’m looking forward to catching up on all your videos and seeing your plant shop reopen. I took a long way around to say thank you 😊 Thank you! 🌱
Thank you for such a lovely comment Tina, that's so sweet of you to say! Yes I still very much have days (sometimes even weeks) of slight burnout, but I know it's totally normal. Good luck pursuing your plant shop, I really hope it all goes well for you 💚
Just an afterthought about not being able to claim for perishables. Could you not offer the plants for say £30 as a plant plus pot package to the customer. Then break the cost down as £1 for the plant and £29 for the pot (not sold seperately). Package is then insured for £29 and if anything happens to the plant then you aren't loosing so much money?
If u plan to restart a plant shop, I recommend u sell flowers or plants that you can eat. Lately, a lot of people have been buying fruit and vegetable plant seeds. With price inflation, food is more expensive so people have decided to grow their own food and canning it. You’d probably make more money if you just sold the seeds actually. Idk what’s happening in the uk, but in America the inflation keeps getting bigger and bill gates owns the most farmland in the world
Hi there , I'm from the uk , inflation is crazy here , alot of people won't do that here unfortunately , although I'm going to start doing some stuff like that , I want to look into ways of helping others like sourdough starters , maybe making bread etc , ans on the plant side of things , I love the whole homestead invision , sso many cans get wasted here , so I want to save them by making sourdough just gotta try and figure it out haha !
Always so informative and your honest take on things. Never too long with action packed information like you have provided. You make repotting look so easy. Thanks for all your time.
I really want my own plant business but know I have got so much to learn and need my own house to have the space. This is so helpful! Thank you! Love your shop and page 💚
There's no reason you couldn't start with cuttings and work up to larger plants over time once you have more space... I think I'd definitely do this if I were to start again and find a balance with it all before diving in headfirst 😂
I've decided to sell a certain plant I've fell in love with and went overboard with buying seeds of a large variety. Lol. I was in the process few months ago of opening up a shop on etsy for other stuff and I won't even need to redo the banner as I used giant flowers I the branding lol. I'm pretty excited to do it all. I'm gonna have to make a greenhouse by next winter tho haha. Gonna have so many beautiful plants that I'm sure my boyfriend would not like them taking up the whole house when he has so many as well haha
Thanks for the insights, very inspiring! 😊 As a strategist and designer I think you are doing a fantastic job! Keep up this spirit and wish you all the best and success!
I have started my business last year by propagating and investing in some plants. I'm glad your business is doing well. The best thing to consider is to schedule your time for the plant business. It can be overwhelming. Maybe you need some help. Cheers. Thank you.,
Congratulations on starting your business! I've taken a step back from mine for a while (as I explained towards the end of the video) as my living circumstances have changed and I physically don't have the space right now
How on earth are you dealing with plant passports and certifications? I’ve speeded up the video to go through it quickly to get to that point but she seems to not talk about that. Pls help me how you can deal with that if you want to sell plants as a side hussle. In my country it doesn’t seem affordable
@KamilaTekin so people tend to sell at stalls their propgations first and on fb , until they can afford and have the customer Base to do wholesale so you buy then jn wholesale and do propgations so save some for yourself until you have enough space , and plants and money to do plant passports 😊 hope this is helpful, also may I ask what country you're from ? , if youre local I'd be happy to support you!x
This was an amazing video I been wanting to do the same as far as opening up an online shop for plants and invertebrates thank you for sharing your experience with this ❤
you seemed to really like these "industrial humidifiers", do you mind sharing with me which one it is? Also thank you so much watched this whole thing and really quite insightful, thank you!!
Thank you! I needed this video. I love my plants but I don’t know whether I could ever sell any! I’m too soft for business too! Thank you for your wonderful videos ❤
Hi! Love your channel. I’ve learned so much. This is probably a stupid question, but why do you plant to one side of the pot? I was taught to plant in the center, so I’m just want to know why I’m changing to your way which I’m sure I’d better lol 😉☺️
I don't know exactly how things have changed since I was trading, but I never had an issue. My suppliers tended to deal with that directly in conversation with the growers and then I'd just receive the plants. I think it depends on who you use/whether you go straight to the source 💚
How did you afford selling plants if they need to get certified and tested before you can sell them? I can’t imagine selling plants as a side hustle because here it’s not affordable
All of the checks were done with my suppliers before they came to me. I bought the plants in for less than I sold them for (usually fairly cheap) and just accounted for postage and packaging 💚
Thank you! OTP are such a fab organisation and you can just contact them to become partnered with them. Once you're partnered you pay $1 for every sale you make (if that's the way you choose to do it) and each one pays to plant a tree somewhere around the world!
I've never dealt in endangered species of plant, but I'm pretty sure there'd be laws/regulations there if so. I know there's also certain non-native plants (particularly aquatics) that aren't legal to sell here (there's a list on the gov website). I personally never encountered any problems though and didn't need a license for anything I was selling - I did insure my business, but again I feel like if you're doing things on a relatively small scale this probably isn't 100% necessary 💚
@@TheJungleHaven thanks very much for taking the time to reply 😁🙏 yes I think I’ll just test the waters first with just the odd plant here and there and see where it leads.
Tried this. Grew 12 gorgeous spider plants, and some pothos. Now a Have 15 potted plants nobody wants to buy, let alone at a price I could make a profit. Folks, don't waste your time!
Not the spider plant... this is my least favorite. It was my very first plant ever so I keep her but I don't care much for her. She's been in the same pot for about 5 years and rarely gets watered but she never dies. Imo, it's a very unattractive plant, especially when they have babies growing. Maybe try again with a prettier, more desired plant.

I have a lot of propagations from the monstera adanonsii. I don't want to throw them away. On facebook nobody wants to buy it, what should I do?
Give them away as gifts. Keep them around untill a birthday or so comes up :)
You may have to revise your listing or just sell at a lowered price. Throwing good plants away in the plant community is frowned upon😂

Hi there! Thank you so much for this video and for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us
How was the plant passporting process? Looking into things and sound like a total headache and could turn out expensive, what was your experience? X

It depends on the plant - many are easier to grow from cuttings/devisions/wetsticks... Do you have a specific plant in mind? 💚
