How to Prune Your Roses in 4 Easy Steps

  • Need help pruning your roses this winter? Learn how to cut and shape your rose bushes for healthier spring growth. Roses can take more than you might think. These four simple steps will have you pruning your roses in no time.
    In Southern California we prune roses in January, but you can get away with it in late February too. Don't wait too long or new growth will make pruning more difficult. Generally speaking, do this major pruning as roses head into dormancy, whenever that is in your climate, or right before they break dormancy. If you don't know when that is, you might want to talk to your local nursery professional and they will be able to give you a ballpark timing.

    One giant overgrown climbing rose Bush that faces beautifully to my neighbour who pruned it on his own side of the fence, lol. The garden was left unattended for a year and a half so with no experience I'm attempting to take over an experienced gardeners landscapes including two rose bushes.
    There are so many plant species, bushes, flowers and hedges. So I will need to abuse you tube to learn about them and hope I can slowly identify them. Its fun gardening. I actually love it as I've never had the privilege of owning a piece of land. It has already been landscaped by a gardener very intensively to house bird and bee life. I'm following my instinct now. Thank you for filming your knowledge and insights. A lovely gifted lady sharing with the world, I hope I can follow your lead.

    I don't typically post comments on TH-cam but I'd thought this would be an ideal time for an exception. I live in Phoenix, Arizona and have been tending (rather poorly) a rose bush on my property. I'd always thought that pruning was strictly small snippets here and there and decided to look up a video to learn the proper way to do it. Yours was amongst the first and taught me that, not only was I pruning improperly, but the majority of my bush was actually dead and rotting away. Hopefully I've saved it in time, but I wanted to extend my gratitude to you for educating me and sharing your knowledge with the world.

    I love this video. Humor with easy to grasp facts! I have 34 rose bushes in my garden. I ... have ....been .... stripping .... of .... all ..... the ..... leaves for 10 years! It takes a couple of days but it is sooooo worth it. First, as Christy said, it helps to expose the rose bush structure (I call them Rose bones). Second, every leaf you pull off reveals a new leaf bud that pops up from the same location. Third, in January and February come the SoCal rains so unless you live in the Land of the Happy Nice Healthy Rose People your rose leaves have rust, black spot and other crud going on. Pulling the leaves off is essential to re-generating happy, healthy rose leaves. Be sure not to leave the, um, leaves on the ground to avoid recontaminating the plants. I am always stunned by the volume of new growth. Hope you will be as well.

    • @terraedwards1697
      @terraedwards1697 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Peter McLaughlin this is for John Andrade: for the black spot and other fungal deseases you can spray the defoliated rose and the ground beneath it with a dormant oil spray mixed with liquid copper fungicide. That will help kill remaining fungus spores, from reinfecting your roses.

      Ashleigh, most of those hard cutbacks you see are on shrub roses, but if you have a taller florabunda or hybrid tea, you might not want to cut down as much. It's totally up to you.
