  • Inflation is sharply up. Now it's 7%. What went wrong?

    ----
Senator Elizabeth Warren blames "corporate greed" for inflation.
“This is about price gouging,” she says.
Nonsense. Prices change because of supply and demand.
Inflation results "from too much money chasing too few goods. So if government is spending more money, that’s more money chasing too few goods,” explains economist David Henderson.
Our government is spending more money. In the last few years, the Federal Reserve has printed much more money than ever before.
Once inflation starts, it’s hard to stop.
In Zimbabwe, they eventually were printing 100 trillion dollar bills.
I assume that won’t happen here.
But with politicians from both sides wanting to spend more, it could happen here.

To the young generation that do not understand price controls and the road to socialism :
1- the price of milk goes up because of increase cost of food, wages, production
2- government price fixes , and now to sell milk, the producer LOSES money,
3- Loss of money is not worth it, so the producer stops producing milk
4- Shortages occur and people complain and blames "corporations" for being greedy again and demands the government do something.
5- Government seizes the producers milk factory to produce milk, and they do it at a higher cost anyway.
6- Inflation grows worse because the cost of milk is being paid for by the printing of more money to pay for taking over the factories and paying workers.|
To those that think this model is theory -- this is exactly what happened in Venezuela.

Lot's of things go up faster than the rate of inflation because companies like to try and price gouge people.
Also, one thing I'd like to point out is that all that newly printed money didn't just vanish into thin air.
Wages are supposed to be paid by businesses and not govt right? Businesses paying stagnant wages kind of makes it worse. If they increased their wages in line with inflation then inflation would be kind of irrelevant.

Printing money: the art of taxing savings.
ANYWAY… assets/liabilities. DC always talk about taxes, up and down. I’m 51 and I’ve never heard serious discussion about the liabilities side of the ledger. NO politician (or few) ever push spending CUTS. Anyone can borrow your credit card and buy all sorts of neat things! WOO HOO! 🤨🤪 What’s needed most is for people to discuss, debate, propose, submit and champion …what to cut back on or eliminate.
While growing up, many people see their parents doing this at times. Sacrifice for the family’s sake. Gotta sell the motorcycle? Cancel the membership? No karate lessons this year, Joey? Eventually, the financial situation improves and affordability increases. The amount and duration of sacrifice varies, but this is when you need adults in the room. Like parents, they should love you and do what’s best and explain it, but discipline is part of life.
Individuals, families and companies can’t get away with flaunting the law. Holding the government accountable must be about more than taxes. Until people are ready to talk about what to cut AND be the adults when the whining and demonizing inevitably come? Ignoring the bills and trying not to think about it is irresponsible and leads to more pain. The accusations are made and bleeding hearts throw a tantrum …EVERY TIME.
If falsely accused of not caring about a group of people, say it’s not true and get on with it. Don’t let the kids run the household or they’ll run it into the ground. An ER doctor can’t afford to play games or delegate the task, but some tough choices arise at critical moments.

    -Thomas Sowell

    • @THall-vi8cp
      @THall-vi8cp 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@Vegan Zombie Scarcity states (not implies) that there is not enough of what you call "stuff" to satisfy the needs of everyone who wants it. In other words, it states that all human wants are unlimited (theoretically) but the the resources we have available to meet those wants are limited and also have other uses. More bluntly, to the degree that what we want seems to be in limited supply, it will also seem to us to be more valuable. This is used to maintain high diamond prices, for example - I'm not kidding; my buddy from South Africa was swimming off the coast of Capetown and witnessed a couple of De Beers boats pouring buckets of rough diamonds into the ocean to keep them from increasing market supply and lowering prices.
The Law of Scarcity defines the drive that pushes companies (or individuals) to provide goods and services to others or in certain cases, and as a corollary provides companies with a tactic to keep prices artificially high.
Scarcity applies not only to "stuff" but also to capital, labor, time, etc.
And production doesn't always come first. I can walk through a forest, pick some berries and eat them. Nobody did anything to get them to me but I consumed them. An enterprising individual can witness this then put in the effort to harvest and sell them at a profit - "production" if you will. If his harvests don't provide enough to meet the demand, he (or someone else) can clear some space, plant and tend a crop then _really_ start selling them. All of this occurred _after_ initial consumption and _after_ it was witnessed that there was a demand.
All that said, Sowell's point wasn't to argue the fine points of economics. He was making a dig at politicians who campaign on promising everything to their constituents, which is as possible as Former Vice President Biden's drive to make every American student "above-average."

Some areas have had much higher increases for various reasons. Others have actually had much lower. They also are trying to look at general "cost of living" which means some things have a much higher weight than others because some are necessities and others aren't.

@Jack Wilson dude I'm 43. I've watched this for my entire life. Stagnant wages, unsustainable government spending, and reckless money printing. Brought to you mostly by democrats and bleeding heart liberals. Example: safer smoking kits (crack pipes) to the tune of 30 million dollars for undeserved minority communities. Do we have an extra 30 million lying around that we will use for this? Nope we will just print it and add it to the debt devaluing the responsible non drug addicts savings accounts. But atleast this will help reduce drug addiction and homelessness right? Well actually most of that money will be siphoned off by the bureaucratic state paying favors and lucrative government contracts given to family members of elected official's. It's the reason I consider myself and vote republican. Although they aren't much better. The truth is our government strayed too far from the founding principles and has grown too large and overreaching. We are way beyond any "tipping point." Now it's just a waiting game to see how authoritarian they will get to try and prop up the system and cling to power before the people have had enough. The system is broken and the people that have been there for the last 50+ years broke it. Clinton's, Bush's, Pelosi, McConnell, Biden, Feinstein, Fauci, Nadler, Schiff and more. They have controlled the reigns of power for half a century and they failed miserably, forgot about or treasonously subverted the oath and the constitution.

The crucial finding is that children adopted by high-SES parents had IQs that averaged 12 points higher than the IQs of those adopted by low-SES parents--and this was true whether the biological mothers of the children were of low or high SES. So the study showed that being raised in a higher-social-class environment produces children with far higher IQ than does being raised in lower-social-class environments. Equally important, the school achievement of children raised in upper-middle-class environments was much higher than that of children raised in lower-class environments. In other words, raising incomes for the bottom of the social class substantially improves IQ for children. This gives China the advantage because their children are getting an advantage in the lower social classes. This is one reason China is coming up so hard against the US. He said once they decoupled the dollar and started printing them non-stop as they do today you could no longer get 2 suits for the $40 but the value of that amount of gold was still worth the same as the 2 suits as it did in the 1800s. This is why we need to return to the Gold standard. figure out the optimal cost for an ounce of gold and then enshrine it in the Constitution. THANK YOU STOSSEL!! I've been preaching this to deaf ears for many years. It's not that things are getting more expensive, but that the intrinsic value of the dollar is shrinking with each new dollar the FED produces. And when you research the root causes of today's inflation, nobody mentions this. You can't just infuse an economy with extra money.
We once led the world in production, and that's what made this nation so wealthy. Now folks want to rest on their laurels while the progress we've made rots beneath them. We can blame it on greed but the silent companion to greed is sloth.... aka: laziness!
What happened to the ambition and industriousness that once embodied the greater portion of Americans?

When it pays to be lazy, you get more lazy people. My niece with two adolescent children can scoff at a job paying $11 an hour plus benefits because she lives in government subsidized housing, and is supported by her mother. She also received stimulus checks, enhanced unemployment comp, lucrative child tax credits, child support, and EBT food cards. She has never held one job longer than two years. I remember when most people would not quit a job unless they had another one lined up. The concept of work ethic is being lost on those who just want cushy jobs that pay them well.

As the population of the country grows its only natural to think that the quantity of currency must grow along with it. For example, there has to be more currency in circulation today than in 1900 because of population growth. What the government is doing is producing currency that won't be supported by population until 2100.

Every thing John said today, I learned in high school many decades ago. It was a business course that covered the past history of business in the U.S. and other countries. I was especially interested and amazed in Germany's major rise in inflation and how it came about.
It's too bad that these subjects are not taught very much in most schools today.
In fact this generation is so absorbed in their phones, they have become stupid.
Even my own grown children and their children are unaware of what is happening in the world, that could affect them and their families now and in the future.

    • @denmander

Given the changes intentionally made to education systems to create a generation of blind and unquestioning activists, being on their phones has more chances of them learning anything useful than in schools. Being absorbed in their phones is a symptom and not the cause.

I was shocked that fully grown adults with college degrees didn't understand why passing the multi trillion dollar Build Back Better bill will increase inflation by so much more. I would point out examples in history where the government spent too much money they didn't have but they just snuffed me off. It's insane how a large portion of this country does not understand basic economy.

I worked at a grocery story in Austin, TX when Nixon placed price controls on beef. The owner had two stores and was also a cattle rancher. He used his on supply of cattle to stock our meat counters. The manager of the Safeway store down the street from our store came in and loaded a cart full of beef for his family. I was temporarily assigned to help with the meat counter and saw him load up the cartel. When I got off work, I went to the Safeway and saw a massive meat counter empty except for a few packages of cows tongue. Nixon abandon this plan rather quickly. Any politician calling for price controls should not receive another vote EVER!
