- I'm quite shy about doing videos so be patient with me until I get comfortable doing them.
The variable speed pulley on this MTD that has sat out in the elements over the past ten years was seized tight by rust.
A brief explanation on how to free up a seized varidrive pulley on a MTD and get it working again.
Take emery cloth, to sand the rust off of the inner shaft, use penetrating oil, then I take C-clamps pull evenly pull the center pulley hub down over the shaft just cleaned. Do the same thing to the other side to clean the rust off, use the C-clamps to pull evenly back and forth while using penetrating oil, until it moves freely. Before installing it into the tractor, I would grease the parts you just cleaned.
Good luck and I hope this helps someone out.

Mate, you just saved me about $130. just picked up a free fixerupper and the variable pulley assembly was seized with rust. All up it took about 5 minutes to get moving freely again. Thank you.
Thank you, that helped alot. I've been fighting with my huskee quick cut for weeks now trying to figure out why it won't go through all 7 speeds and only goes through the first 3. I replaced both drive belts thinking they were stretched and I just could not figure it out. I even had the variable speed pulley off but I didn't realize that the center was suppose to move like that. Looks like mine is seized up then because it did not move at all when I had it off. I'll take it off again and grab my cans of light oil and WD40 and my Emory paper and get that sucker freed up tomorrow. Thank you again for making this video, it's helped me alot.
Thank you for the kind words. I hope it works for you, it should. Just put a few drops of oil on the shaft of the veridrive pulley every spring and you should get years of use out of it. My grand kids still use my old MTD for romping though the woods. I wish you the best on fixing it.
I am working on a Project Rat Rod Tractor and I changed the final drive pulley but it wasn't going anywhere Fast.
It has this design and I figured it was something like this. I do Appreciate your putting this out here so I could get some insight before taking mine apart.
I should have torn the whole drive system down and gone through it while I was waiting for engine parts.
I can't really complain about this particular Tractor because it only cost $25.
I have another one with the same setup and it works fine, but it wasn't setting up at the Dump for as long as the Rat Tractor was.
Again Thank You for the Video!!!
Thanks for making this video. I noticed my MTD mower was not changing speed anymore, even after replacing the belts.
The pulley must be locked up. Time for a lube. Thanks.
jrbilek6 No problem, sorry for me being so nervous, this is one of my first videos I have done. I hope they will get better as time goes on. Good luck on your MTD.
Thanks for watching, I really appreciate it.
Thank you Jim! I am working on two mowers now and I believe this is the problem.
Thanks for the video. Now I know why I have only one speed on my Montgomery wards mower!
Good video man . Very helpful, I spent a lot of time messing with the linkage on my speed control. Thanks man
very helpful! i have 2 tractors with this setupand i havent been able to find a video showing how the pulley actually moves. but yours does!
I am not a welder either but when my welds hold, I don't care what it looks like.
very helpful been fighting my tractor all year off and on
helped me...thanks
Glad I could help. 😀
Thank you Jim. That was a big help.
Awesome glad I found this video though something was really wrong with mine
Thanks I have a old MTD 15.5 HP that will not pull in the lower speeds but did fine in the high speed. I think this may be the problem I will give it a try when it quits raining everyday for a while!
Was this your problem? I am having that issue now, I can go like a bat out of hell, but I cant go slower.
Sorry I have been hospitalized and in therapy for over a year due to a brain aneurysm. Yes it will fix your problem if you can get the variable pulley freed up. They will seize in the open or closed position so the tractor my go like hell or just creep in forward and reverse. The variable speed pulley is poorly designed they get a little moisture and they will rust and it will keep it from moving through it's speeds.
Hope you are doing ok now, those are nothing to mess around with, one killed my mom. I got the belts off & the pulley moves freely. Honestly the belts don't look horrible but maybe they are stretched out. Old guy, what was your solution? What exactly makes the pulley move when using the speed selector? I move it and see the rod move but other than the part that locks the parking brake on, I don't see anything move???
I'm doing fine now thanks. Still a slight limp on the left side. I had relearn how to work the left side of my body and speech therapy.
The variable speed pulley should move forward and back with the speed selector. Belt tension is what opens and closes the speed pulley. If your speed pulley isn't moving back and forth your speed selector rod may have come undone. It's hard to tell without seeing it. Good luck, I hope you figure it out.
Still ha ving the same problem I have not had time to work on it yet! Good luck with yours I think I need to replace the drive belt!
thanks from canada this helped me a lot
Very very good ideal
Thank You so very much
have better idea, I used a coarse compound for valves 120, then 250, washed that off and everything is OK.........thanks a lot TINKER JIM, your video is great.
Thanks Jim. Great vid. Keep it up
WD40 works great for getting the grime out ....so does Kroil or any penetrating oil.
I threw mine in a pale filled with kroil and it worked wonders.
For some reason the WD40 is good for getting the grime out of the crevices.
Thanks for the video, My MTD has the 'long version' of the variable pulley and the middle sheave is on a sleeve and slides up and down but has siezed onto the shaft. Once I get it free, how do I lubricate it and stop the grease flying out on to the belts? Also what kind of bearing is in the tube, phosper bronze or what? I guess it may be just a steel shaft and steel tube with half a sheive welded on each end and if so, why don't MTD put a grease nipple in the side of the sliding tube to prevent it rusting onto the shaft? Thanks
Mine has a bronze sleeve for a bearing. I put a very light coating of grease and wipe off the excess grease. I do it every spring. MTD does everything cheaply so yo get you to buy parts I guess.
@@dagwood64 Thanks a lot. I've squirted in penetrating oil so far and if/when I get it unseized (I've tried a small crowbar but don't want to bend the sheaves), I'll squirt in some grease in the top end between the sheaves and bottom gap between those sheaves and hope it gets to the bronze bushes.
A+++ Awesome video! That helps me out alot! Thank you for your video!
Great video now I know how to fix mine!
Thanks for the video. Gonna give this a try
Have a LT2000 vari drive that won't stop moving. Does this pully control movement or the idler pulley. It does stop on occasion but mostly wants to keep moving, forward, or reverse.
My MTD Yard Machine is old & it would go then stop until I depressed the gas again. Finally at end of mowing season last year it wouldn't go at all. So this year I was going to replace the 2 (what I call the drive belts) belts & couldn't get the front pulley off so I took it to a repairnan who finally (after over 3 weeks) got it off & had to replace it with another used one. But he told me after another week it wouldn't go without the same thing. I didn't tell him it was doing that before again. I believe that's all it needs is cleaning so I'm going to pass that on or either do it myself because it's liable to take him another 3 weeks!!! Makes me feel stupid because the belts looked okay except for a few minor cracks in one so that's probably all the problem was to begin with!!!
The belts can look great and still slip due to stretching. What I do to get more life out of them is change the tension spring to a heavier one. You don't need to remove the front pulley to replace the belts.
I have an old Yard Man mower, with the variable pulley, but, it has linkage above it. It will probably be easier to remove the deck to get to it. It also has problems with the blades stopping/slowing down, when mowing. Does anyone know if this will help, with this problem? A new belt helps for a little while. Or, maybe it just needs an adjustment that I can't figure out.
good video, thanks for showing the variable speed pully! I wish you would have shown the shifter. I think mine is missing a spring or something, Is it supposed to be pretty solid or does it move up and down some?
I need to see how the speed shifter is hooked up right or can be adjusted it runs like it is and low gear all the time runs the same and first Avenue six on a on a MTD riding lawn mower
Thanks, good video.
Can anyone help? I have a 7 speed troy bilt, i guess it is automatic because i have to change the speed by the yellow lever. Yesterday the spring broken that is near the motor while i was mowing and then it would not go forward or reverse. It took me a while to find the broken spring. Replaced it today but now it will only go in 1st gear, If you put it in 2nd through 7th it still only goes as fast as 1st gear. Can anyone tell what i did wrong. Is there a specific thing i have to do or pull before i attach the spring back to wear it goes, like take it off the brake then connect spring or put it in 7th first then connect the spring? Thanks for any help. Mine is a troy-bilt pony 7 speed and i guess automatic and purchased it around 2011. thanks
cool video
Fullthrottle440 Thanks for checking out my channel and commenting, I appreciate it.
If you’re smart you will stock up on these and older riding mowers 😊
Folks have yet to figure out how bad they are being screwed over 😢😢😢
Looks like a worthy technique.
Was this filmed on a phone ? Just asking because I couldn't hear the audio. I get that sometimes and it usually is vids made with phones. I'm still trying to sort it out on my end but haven't got it cured yet. lol Cheers, Keep em coming...
***** I appreciate the view.
No, it was filmed with a Samsung HMX-W300 full HD shock + waterproof camera. I don't have a cellphone, I'm too rough on them. I either lose them or run over them lol.
I just got home from having two teeth pulled when I made these videos and I'm still very shy talking to a camera. I hope I will get better as time goes by and I will try to speak up more.
It wasn't the volume, I had no audio on this vid, but your others were fine. Problem is probably on my end. You're doin great !.
Nice A cups
