    As a doctor myself, i'm surprised physicians scored so high on average on IQ tests compared to other professions. I see most doctors as hard workers rather than intellectually brilliant. I see mathematicians/ physicists as those who are intellectually gifted for the most part.

      Thank you!!! I share the same sentiments. I've just been accepted to MS. And so far, in undergrad, biology and even O Chem was not hard for me. Biology to me was mostly learning facts and there were 1 or 2 applied questions.
      I went to a community college before being transferred to a University college. I majored in Physics, Biology, and chemistry. Let me tell you, physics was way harder than biology & chemistry (And biology had way more notes than the other two). I had to study and practice hours in Physics just to fully understand the concept. When I transferred to University college, I majored in Biology only going forward. Let me tell you 😂😂 going forward everything was a breeze 😂 because coming off of physics, everything was just memorizing in bio and one or 2 applied questions. The only course in Bio ,which was somewhat difficult, was Biochemistry, and that was fun for me.
      I know MS is a different beast by itself 😂
      I would say that for some reason smart people choose Medicine but it definitely doesn't require you to be crazy smart.

      I too believe that we are more of hard workers than anything else actually , I thought that the video would say surprisingly doctors were of average IQ and that would not be surprising to me at all :D . I think engineering students , Physicists are a lot smarter and they don't need to sit all the time we spend on studying and yet they excel.

      @@manartalha6142 yeah I agree, people in medicine work really really hard and the motivation I see in students, it's like wow they can keep this up for 4 straight years. One thing I have to hand to medicine, is the volume of information. While I do believe Physicists and Engineers are smart, there is no "easy shortcuts" to remembering all the info. ,In medicine, in such a small space of time. Like you can be really smart and grasp concepts fast, but the human brain is simply not able to pact the vast amount of info. "In let's say, a week before the set exam" 😂 Like you still have to study a lot.

With that being said, my grandfather was a general surgeon and he was an absolute genius. He read probably tons of books and extremely quickly, and had an eidetic memory. He knew everything about science, history, etc. he was just overall very very smart.

    • @tariqsaleh618
      @tariqsaleh618 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      No, the time it takes to accomplish something is indeed an important consideration before making major decisions. For instance, while doctors continue to study well into their late 20s and perhaps early 30s (I am aware, however, you are still considered a doctor at this stage and still receive an income and work in a hospital, but you are still “studying”), most other people will have finished long before. Time, thus, is important to put into consideration. People choose medicine IN SPITE of the time it takes, not DISREGARDING it.

      @@tariqsaleh618 No, I disagree. It's never too late to go for your dreams. I am in my third gap year, and because of the specialty that I am interested in, I will not be finished with residency until I am 35. I really don't care because I love learning and I know that this is what I want to do, REGARDLESS of how much time it takes. So yes, never give up on a dream because it takes time. Success, after all, is not about the destination but the journey, the climb, the effort, the struggle and the time. ✌🏾

      Tylan Jamison , I don’t disagree with much of what you said. I personally am interested in a speciality which , by the time i’m a consultant, I will be well over my 30’s. I have, however, thought about it and put the “time” into consideration before making my decision. My point is do not fall into the trap of following whatever dream you have and disregard the time in the process. DO put time into consideration, and make your judgment after thinking well. We always hear about those who have succeeded by following their dreams, but seldom hear about those who failed to fulfill their dreams after perhaps poor and impractical decisions. We do live, after all, in a practical world..

I took a PhD in Egyptology, know a half dozen ancient languages and an equal number of modern ones, specialized in ancient organic residue analysis, archaeological theory, and Bronze Age Near Eastern interconnections, directed vast field work projects throughout the Eastern Mediterranean and beyond, taught and published widely, served as scholar-in-residence in a number of internationally renowned academic institutions, curated collections in four leading museums in Greece, France, the U.K., and the U.S., served on the executive and editorial boards in a number of prestigious learned societies, and have consistently attained high scores (ranging from the ninety-sixth to the ninety-eighth percentile) in a series of government administered cognitive tests. Still, my two closest childhood friends - both of whom became practicing physicians and are now eminent neuroscientists and cognitive specialists - continually assure me that I’m spectacularly stupid, chiefly on account of the fact that I never attended medical school, but also because I’m largely ignorant of pop culture trivia and hopelessly inept in the use of social media platforms.

    I think there is more nuance to be taken into account with IQ in this arena. For example, physicians and surgeons from Columbia, Harvard, UC San Diego, etc are likely to have higher average IQs than Physicians and Surgeons at a very low ranked Medical School. This goes into the "sorting effect" described in this video. Along with this, from my personal experience, strategy and work ethic can bridge the gap for those who are not quite as 'fluidly intelligent" as others. However, one certainly needs to be high in fluid intelligence to have a shot in medicine.
    There is some older research on experts in Chess (early 2000s) where they did find links between higher IQs and higher ranks, but total storage in Long Term Memory/Schemas were found to be more predictive. If I could find the article, I would - but I've tried looking for it without success (I am sure it was probably Ericcson).
    What do you think of these points? Specifically, what do you think about techniques, study strategies, and work ethic bridging the gap for those who are not as high in fluid IQ - this seems to be one of the goals of your work and channel.

    The question isn’t whether the work is intellectually challenging, but rather whether the people doing the work are intelligent. That’s fairly easy to answer by thinking back to your high school and asking what profession the smartest students in your class chose. It’s usually medicine, sometimes law, occasionally dentistry, but seldom physics or mathematics. People who choose physics usually enjoy it and have some aptitude for it, but they’re almost never the people who ace every subject and end up on the podium as the valedictorian. People just assume physicists must be intelligent because the work the do appears more abstract and intellectual than something like medicine. But that poor hospital intern you see working his guts out on a 36 hour shift in the inpatient ward - that person is going to have a higher intelligence on average than your average college physics lecturer.

    Informative video. The numbers for IQs were a little higher than reality if they are supposed to be averages. People are smart in different ways so it depends on the nature of the problems being solved and how well people integrate ideas from different sources to help them have insights, and that's not one and the same with the intelligence that gets tested on IQ tests.

    This is a very old study from the USA. The IQs of all students have decreased since then. Almost 50% of all people study in many western countries. the average iq of students thus cant be higher than 75% percentile if you assume that only the smarter half of the people studies (which isnt true so it will be probably around 70% percentile). I would guess that the iq of physicians wont be higher than 120 in the usa. in other countries it might be even much lower. in the usa its higher because the usa attracts smart people from all over the world for financial reasons.

    You think that the wealthiest are incredibly intelligent. Look up on halo effect. Basically if you see one attribute of a person that you consider to be very positive, in this case wealth, you paint all his other attributes with the same positivity, even if you don't know anything about it. A real life example of this, is that they took a pretty teacher and an ugly teacher, both with the same skill level at teaching, and got her to teach a class to the same group of students. The students then rated the teacher in many attributes, like ability to teach, etc. The students rated all the attributes of the pretty teacher as being higher than the ugly teacher.
    Another bias, is that to the victor goes the spoils, or the rich can control the narrative. Everytime a rich person goes to a talk show, or does some talk, he can control what gets asked of him. He can buy anyone that knows his wrong doings to keep quiet. He can sue anyone that does something to offend him. Also, bill gates just copied xerox. Zuckerberg just stole the idea from other students. Also, bezzos, and other billionaires are getting tax break after tax break. If they were from any other country that wasn't the US, they wouldn't get that rich.

Life saving skills are not beyond anyones remit, not psychologically smart but compassionate. I see a compassionate life saver in the field, in the casualty dept. Smart means well-rounded, impressionable person, outside from behind the desk you hide. Doctors asimilate huge amouts of info to make them docs, doesn't make them world-ready smart though.

An example of this could be both my parents; both are very successful physicians; my father is a vascular surgeon and my mother is a pathologist working in private and I can assure you that they are both not very smart. Yes, they are smart at what they do and that is from studying, but IQ wise, they are average. I was not born smart like my brother who luckily was, but I still have better grades than him with a underweighted 4.0 gpa in hs taking honors and AP from studying and persevering. Nowadays I don't place value on the words "smart" or "intelligent." Supposedly, IQ tests test one's intelligence. But it shouldn't even exist. It's attempting to do the impossible, because there is no way to test "intelligence", or at least not how IQ tests do. First off, it's thought there's different types of intelligence. Meanwhile IQ tests rank people based on their ability to look at patterns and stuff. So is the only intelligence to be able to solve puzzles? And even if the score should have value, anyone can prepare for it, just like any test. The reason chess players score high on IQ tests is because they spend all their time analyzing patters! If everyone did the same, everyone would have high IQ scores. So does that mean with practice/experiences, anyone can be "IQ smart"? Or what? Because I think IQ tests claim to measure some intelligence that was there the whole time. Something you were born with and can change. "If you're dumb now, you'll be dumb forever."
    Thankfully, one's IQ score doesn't mean anything. Plus it's impossible and valueless to determine if someone is "more intelligent" than someone else. It just adds to individual arrogance and public sadness. What you can really measure, and what is really valuable, is knowledge and creativity. And anyone can achieve those things with practice. No baby will be able to solve 1 + 2. Everyone starts with zero, and from there you learn. It's important to notice this because we call studious students who have learned more "geniuses" and in turn think less of ourselves.
    There are no limits people. Only the ones you set yourself. Although I'd like to think we all have the same potential, there are people who could have certain advantages, like better memory or creativity from the start. But you can achieve the same things over time. And even if we have different potentials, there's no way to measure it. Just do what you love.

    • @0doublezero0
      @0doublezero0 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry man but that's life. They already have these "IQ tests" in the form of MCAT, GRE, SAT, ASVAB etc. You can study for some of them, but having an innate intelligence gives you a large edge.

    • @Berny27
      @Berny27 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@0doublezero0 it sounds like you don't know what you're talking about. IQ tests like I said claim to measure "intelligence". That's why they ask pattern and tricky questions, not when Portugal's constitution was written. Meanwhile tests like the MCAT, DCAT and SAT are knowledge tests that are used for admissions meant to asses one's ***knowledge*** on matters. That's why there's study guides and courses, so you memorize the content. That's knowledge. Not intelligence. There's a difference.
      But what I was focusing on was the emotional outcomes. When someone gets a low score in those standardized tests, they know and expected to because they didn't study. After studying they do much better. Whereas intelligence tests put a label on you, and claim they're very reliable and no matter how much you prepare you'll get the same score (which is dumb because you can prepare and practice analyzing patterns). Either way, you should've known the first part if you ever took a test in school.

      “There are no limits people.” - Can I teach a chicken calculus?
      There are genetic limitations in our ability to have children, excel in athletics, socialize, utilize our senses. How could evolution have permitted a perfectly equal playing field in the realm of intelligence?
      There is currently no reliable evidence that suggests IQ can be changed. There is a wealth of scientific literature that has substantiated the genetic basis of IQ, including but not limited to: twin studies, adoption studies, allele research, neuron density and gray matter imaging, etc.
      IQ tests may not test perfectly the abstract idea of Intelligence, but they do measure “g,” or general intelligence, which has a strong relationship to just about every meaningful life outcome; notably: income, likelihood to commit crime, educational attainment, likelihood to have an illegitimate child, and more. The classic book “The Bell Curve” is an excellent resource in this field of study.

      @@Berny27 IQ test are better referred to as General Ability or G-Factor. You can't truly study for an actual IQ test administered by a psychologist. Your actual score may improve but your IQ is unchanged. Just like muscle, if you workout you will eventually hit your genetic limit to where you can't really improve past it without using drugs. If you can create a drug that improves IQ you would be the one of greatest scientist to walk the earth. Bringing a person from 75 to 85 would be monumental, someone in the 75 range can hardly function by themselves so an 85 would get them a blue collar job at minimum which is a step up.

I feel like I'll lose IQ points if I compare the IQs of Surgeons and Nurses, I hope surgeons are smart, lol, I also hope that nurses are intelligent, both really should actually be intelligent if you think about it...
